See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance type you run this image on. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, so pricing scales with the compute size and family you choose. Smaller instances like t2.micro cost less per hour, while large compute, memory, storage, and GPU types cost more. Bare-metal and high-memory types sit at the higher end. There are no tiers or commitments here — your total depends on which instance you launch and how many hours you run it. Instance families cover general purpose, compute, memory, storage, and accelerated computing needs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What am I paying for on top of the underlying EC2 instance cost?
You pay for the Ubuntu Pro 22.04 FIPS software licence, billed per instance-hour. This covers FIPS 140 certified cryptographic modules, security hardening tools, and vulnerability patching. Standard AWS EC2 compute and storage charges apply separately and appear on the same bill.
Am I charged the software fee when my instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software charge meters running time only. A stopped or paused instance does not accrue the Ubuntu Pro software fee. You may still pay underlying AWS storage costs for the attached volumes, but those are separate from this listing's per-hour software charge.
Does my hourly rate change if I resize to a larger instance type?
Yes. Each instance type maps to its own hourly rate. If you launch or move to a bigger compute, memory, storage, or GPU type, you pay that type's rate for the hours you run it. There is no commitment, so the rate follows whichever instance you actually launch.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

For Ubuntu Cloud Guest, it is recommended to manually configure your Security Group or firewall settings based on your application needs. The default 1-Click Security Group only opens port 22 to allow SSH access using the 'ubuntu' user. If you selected the 1-Click Security Group during deployment, you can modify it later through the AWS Console or AWS API to open additional ports required by your application.
