See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for CentOS 8 running on the AWS EC2 instance type you choose. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, so pricing scales with the compute, memory, and storage that instance provides. Smaller shared-core types like the t-family cost less per hour, while larger compute-optimized (c), general-purpose (m), memory-optimized (r, x, z), storage (i, d) and accelerated (g, p, inf, trn) families cost more. Bare-metal and high-memory options sit at the upper end. There is no upfront commitment; you are billed only for the hours each instance runs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually receive for the hourly charge on each instance type?
Each hourly rate covers a running CentOS 8 machine image on the AWS EC2 instance size you select. That instance defines the CPU, memory, and storage you get. The image includes updates, firewall configuration, and network setup, and launches with one click on AWS.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software charge meters running time only, so a stopped instance does not accrue this fee. You are billed just for the hours each instance actually runs. Stopped instances may still incur separate AWS storage charges for attached volumes, which are billed by AWS.
How does my cost change if I move to a larger instance type?
You are not locked into one size. Each instance type is its own hourly dimension. If you switch to a larger family or size, you pay that type's hourly rate for the hours it runs. There is no upfront commitment, so you can change sizes as needs shift.
