Files are streamed directly to cloud storage locations such as AWS S3, Azure Blob and Google Cloud Storage. Data is not stored anywhere along the way or exposed to a third party.
SFTP Gateway is a secure, scalable, and easy-to-use solution for transferring files via SFTP to cloud storage services such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. It facilitates seamless file transfers directly to cloud storage, ensuring data protection by never storing files in transit. Administrators manage the SFTP service through an intuitive web dashboard.
The professional version supports high availability for production workloads. We recommend this version for any production deployment that requires redundancy and high performance. High availability is provided by deploying multiple SFTP Gateway instances to private subnets in different availability zones. Traffic is automatically routed to each instance using a network load balancer. The High Availability deployment is automated using our deployment templates, making the process quick and easy.
SFTP Gateway provides end-to-end data encryption and protection. It runs as a Virtual Machine image in your private cloud environment. Data is transferred directly from SFTP clients to cloud storage locations, like AWS S3, Azure Blob Storage, or Google Cloud Storage, and is never touched by a third party. It supports configurable SFTP encryption algorithms during transfer. At rest, files are encrypted using cloud storage bucket policies with Platform or Customer-Managed encryption keys via services like KMS, Key Vault, etc.
SFTP Gateway has been independently audited by a leading third-party security company. Security Audit report, Penetration Test results and Letter of Attestation is available on request.

See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for each running instance of SFTP Gateway Professional. The software rate is the same across every EC2 instance type and AWS region, so your choice of instance size does not change the software price. You select an instance based on the compute, memory, or performance your workload needs, from small general-purpose sizes to large memory- and compute-optimized machines. The hourly software charge is separate from and added on top of your standard AWS EC2 costs. You can stop an instance anytime to end further hourly charges.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly software charge cover, and what user or data limits apply to SFTP Gateway Professional?
The hourly charge covers the running software instance. SFTP Gateway Professional supports up to 100 users and a 10 TB monthly data limit. You manage users through a web dashboard. High availability is recommended, which needs a minimum of two instances, so each instance bills separately by the hour.
Am I charged the hourly software rate when an instance is stopped or idle?
The software rate meters running time only. When you stop a server instance, the hourly software charges end. You can stop an instance anytime to prevent further charges. Underlying AWS costs like storage may still apply while resources exist, but the software licence bills active hours.
How does the hourly software charge relate to my EC2 costs on my bill?
Two charges apply at the same time. The SFTP Gateway software rate is the same across every EC2 instance type and region. Separately, AWS charges you for the EC2 instance itself, which varies by instance size. Both charges add together and appear on your AWS bill.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

What do you dislike about the product?
I often forget it’s even in our environment because it’s so hands-off. When I do need to interact with it, I find myself having to relearn how to manage the product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have outside vendors who require SFTP access for automation and it fits the bill perfectly. It seamlessly lets us move this process to an Azure Storage Account for internal automation.

Secure, Simple, Enterprise-Ready SFTP Gateway

What do you like best about the product?
What I like best about Thorn Technologies SFTP Gateway is its strong balance of security, simplicity, and enterprise readiness.
Security-first design: It provides robust SFTP with hardened configurations, key-based authentication, and clear separation between external access and internal systems, which helps reduce risk. Ease of use and administration: Setup and ongoing management are straightforward, making it easier for teams to onboard partners and manage file transfers without excessive operational overhead. Reliability and stability: It’s built to handle dependable, repeatable file transfers—ideal for mission‑critical integrations where uptime and data integrity matter. Enterprise-friendly integration: The gateway fits well into existing architectures and compliance requirements, making it suitable for regulated or security-sensitive environments.
Overall, the standout quality is how it delivers secure file transfer capabilities without unnecessary complexity, which is especially valuable in enterprise and partner-integration scenarios.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some of the common dislikes or limitations people note about Thorn Technologies SFTP Gateway tend to be practical rather than fundamental flaws:
Limited advanced features out of the box Compared to some larger managed file transfer (MFT) platforms, it can feel lightweight. Features such as complex workflow orchestration, built‑in transformation, or advanced analytics may require additional tooling or integration.
UI and UX feel dated The administration interface is functional but not especially modern or intuitive, which can slow down day‑to‑day management for teams used to more polished dashboards.
Customization can require extra effort More specialized requirements—custom authentication flows, detailed audit reporting, or bespoke automation—may need scripting, configuration tweaks, or vendor support rather than being easily configurable through the UI.
Scaling and monitoring visibility While stable, monitoring and scalability options aren’t as rich as some enterprise MFT competitors, which may matter in very high‑volume or multi‑tenant environments.
Support model dependence For deeper issues or non‑standard use cases, you may rely more heavily on vendor support, which can be a downside if you prefer fully self‑service tools.
Overall, the main downside is that it prioritizes secure, straightforward SFTP over feature depth and modern UX, which is fine for many use cases but can feel limiting for more complex or rapidly growing integrations.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Thorn Technologies SFTP Gateway is primarily solving the problem of secure, controlled, and simplified external file exchange, and that delivers several tangible benefits. Problems it solves
Secure partner file transfers It addresses the risk of exposing internal systems by providing a hardened SFTP gateway that sits at the edge, isolating external users from the core network while still allowing required data exchange.
Compliance and audit requirements The gateway centralizes authentication, access control, and logging, helping meet regulatory and audit expectations without building custom solutions.
Operational complexity of custom SFTP setups Instead of maintaining bespoke SFTP servers or scripts, it provides a standardized, supported solution that reduces configuration errors and long-term maintenance overhead.
Partner onboarding friction It simplifies onboarding external vendors, customers, or partners by offering a consistent mechanism for key-based authentication, access scoping, and managed credentials.
How this benefits me
Reduced security risk I don’t need to expose internal storage or application servers directly to external users, which materially lowers the attack surface.
Faster time to integration New file-transfer integrations can be delivered quickly without designing security architecture from scratch.
Lower operational overhead Administration, troubleshooting, and auditing are simpler compared to managing multiple ad-hoc SFTP solutions.
Confidence in reliability The gateway provides a stable, predictable file transfer layer that can be trusted for business‑critical data exchanges.
Overall, the biggest benefit is peace of mind: it allows secure, compliant file sharing with external parties while keeping internal systems protected and operations manageable.
