Overview
PostgreSQL 16 on Amazon Linux 2023 provides a fully configured, production-ready relational database environment on AWS.
This AMI is built on a minimal installation of Amazon Linux 2023, updated to the latest security patches, and includes PostgreSQL 16 pre-installed and configured for immediate use. PostgreSQL is the world's most advanced open source relational database, known for its reliability, data integrity, and extensibility. Version 16 brings significant performance improvements to query parallelism, bulk data loading, and logical replication.
Key components included:
- PostgreSQL 16 server and client tools
- pg_dump, pg_restore, psql command-line tools
- Performance monitoring extensions (pg_stat_statements)
Key features of PostgreSQL 16:
- Enhanced parallel query execution with support for FULL and RIGHT outer joins
- Improved logical replication with parallel apply and replication from standbys
- Optimized COPY performance for bulk data loading
- SQL/JSON constructors and identity functions
- Enhanced monitoring with pg_stat_io view
The system is security hardened following best practices. SSH access uses key pair authentication only. PostgreSQL is configured to accept local connections by default with peer authentication. Unnecessary services and packages have been removed to reduce the attack surface. Automatic security updates are enabled by default.
This AMI is suitable for web application databases, transactional systems, data warehousing, geospatial applications (with PostGIS), analytics workloads, and any use case requiring a reliable relational database.
Highlights
- Production ready - PostgreSQL 16 pre-installed and configured with optimized settings. Launch a reliable database server without manual setup or tuning.

Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
