AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour for Ubuntu Pro running on Arm-based (Graviton) EC2 instances. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, from small shared-core options like t4g.nano up to bare-metal and large multi-core instances like r8g.48xlarge. The software charge scales with instance size, since pricing reflects the number of vCPUs. Larger instances cost more per hour; smaller ones cost less. There are no tiers or feature differences between dimensions. You simply select the instance type matching your workload and are billed per hour of use.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate for each instance type actually pay for?
The hourly charge covers the Ubuntu Pro software layer, not the EC2 compute itself. This includes security patches for Ubuntu components and hundreds of open source applications, FIPS and Common Criteria certified components, optional hardening profiles, and Kernel Livepatch. AWS bills the underlying instance separately.
Why do larger instance types cost more per hour for the same software?
Ubuntu Pro pricing scales with instance size because it is based on the number of vCPUs. A larger instance has more vCPUs, so its hourly software charge is higher. Metering runs by the second, which suits automation and scaling across any deployment size.
Am I charged the Ubuntu Pro fee when my instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running time. A stopped instance is not consuming vCPU hours, so the Ubuntu Pro charge does not accrue while it is powered off. You may still pay underlying AWS storage fees for the stopped instance, billed separately by AWS.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
