Linux Environment with Xfce GUI Desktop:
Easily launch a remote virtual machine with this AMI to start a Linux environment featuring an Xfce GUI Desktop. The server is equipped with XRDP, allowing you to connect using any RDP client. The default username is ruser, and the password is the EC2 instance ID (e.g., i-0c7fadc4dc193eca7). -
Regular RStudio Server Access:
After starting the EC2 instance, access RStudio Server via its public IP address. The default username is ruser, and the password is the EC2 instance ID (e.g., i-0c7fadc4dc193eca7).
HTTPS has been enabled to ensure all data between your browser and our servers is encrypted, with all HTTP traffic now automatically redirected to HTTPS for secure communications.
The HTTPS connection uses a self-signed certificate, requiring you to accept it in your browser to proceed securely. Additionally, if the IP address changes, a new self-signed certificate will be generated, and you may need to accept the new certificate to maintain a secure connection.
Highlights
- Up-to-date R and thousands of R packages
- HTTPS for secure communications
- AI Assistant and Elm Computing Support

Vendor refund policy
Our AMI product uses a usage-based charging model, with charges incurred only when the associated EC2 instance is running. No software support charges apply while the instance is stopped or terminated. Refunds are available for billing errors resulting in charges while the instance was not running. As charges are processed through AWS, confirmation from AWS is required before issuing a refund for the affected period.

Amazon Machine Image (AMI)
An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.

Additional details
Usage instructions
This AMI offers two ways to set up and use your environment: RStudio IDE with AI Assistant within Linux GUI Desktop and regular RStudio Server access, with more details available at https://docs.elmcomputing.io/ami/x86/rstudio-overview-ai.html .
- RStudio IDE with AI Assistant within Linux GUI Desktop
To connect to the Linux GUI Desktop on your EC2 instance using an RDP client, please use the public IP address of the instance as the PC name. The default username is ruser, and the password is the EC2 instance ID, which follows the format i-0c7xxxxxxxxxxxxxx. Make sure to replace i-0c7xxxxxxxxxxxxxx with your actual instance ID, which you can find in the AWS Management Console under the Instances section. Proceed to connect; you may receive a security warning about the certificate, but you can choose to continue.
If you don't have an RDP client installed, you can download one (Windows App) from the links below:
For Mac: https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/windows-app/id1295203466?mt=12
For Windows: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9n1f85v9t8bn?hl=en-us&gl=US
This setup allows you to remotely access your instance using the Remote Desktop Protocol with the provided credentials.
The steps to connect to the Linux GUI Desktop can be found at https://docs.elmcomputing.io/ami/x86/linux-login.html
To start the RStudio IDE, go to:
Applications -> Development -> RStudio
This will launch the RStudio IDE with AI Assistant within your Linux environment.
- Regular RStudio Server access
After the EC2 instance is started, you can also access the RStudio Server with its public IP address. For example, if the IP address is 10.11.12.13, typing http://10.11.12.13 in the browser will bring you to the RStudio Server login page.
The default username is ruser and the password is the EC2 instance ID that has the form of i-0c7xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
Automatic Redirect from HTTP to HTTPS:
All HTTP traffic is now automatically redirected to HTTPS, ensuring that all communications between your browser and our servers are encrypted and secure.
Self-Signed Certificate:
Please note that the HTTPS connection uses a self-signed certificate. When accessing the site for the first time, you may need to accept the self-signed certificate in your browser to proceed. This step is necessary to establish a secure connection.
IP Address Changes:
If the IP address changes, a new self-signed certificate will be generated. You may need to accept the new certificate in your browser to re-establish a secure connection.
The details can be found at https://docs.elmcomputing.io listing all the installed R packages.
The SSH username is ubuntu, and the SSH port is 22.
