Scout APM helps engineering teams quickly identify and fix performance bottlenecks in Ruby, Python, Elixir and PHP applications. Track slow endpoints, database queries, memory issues, and errors with detailed transaction traces and actionable insights that pinpoint exactly where problems occur. Combines performance monitoring, error tracking, and log management in one platform without the complexity of enterprise APM tools.
    4.6

    Overview

Scout APM monitors application performance, tracks errors, and manages logs for Ruby, Python, Elixir, and PHP applications. The client side agent automatically instruments your framework to collect transaction traces, surface N+1 queries, detect memory bloat, and identify slow database calls. You get percentile-based metrics for each endpoint along with detailed traces showing exactly where time is spent in requests.

Error monitoring groups exceptions automatically and provides full context for each occurrence including request parameters, environment data, stack traces and custom context. When configured with GitHub integration, backtraces link directly to the relevant code. Logs can be viewed alongside performance data and errors to see the complete picture when diagnosing issues. Performance data, errors, and logs are correlated by request to make troubleshooting faster.

The monitoring agent runs in your application process with minimal overhead. The minimal setup involves adding a package and deploying with a configuration file or environment variables. Deployment markers, commit tracking, and customizable alerts help connect performance changes to specific code releases. The interface focuses on the metrics that matter for application performance: response times, throughput, error rates, and resource consumption.

    Highlights

    • Automatic instrumentation for Ruby, Python, Elixir and PHP, while capturing transaction traces, detecting N+1 queries, slow/long lasting queries, as well as identifying memory bloat
    • Performance monitoring, error tracking, and log management all in one tool - Correlates traces, exceptions, and logs for faster troubleshooting
    • Low overhead agent with minimal setup required

Powerful Rails Insights, But the UI Needs a Modern Refresh

    Reviewed on May 13, 2026
    Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
Scout is built for Ruby and Rails rather than retrofitted onto it, and that focus shows up everywhere. Install is three lines in the Gemfile, a config file, and a deploy. You're looking at real data in about five minutes. N+1 detection and slow-query analysis are the killer features for any Rails app. Scout points you straight at the offending controller action and ActiveRecord call pattern, so you can land a fix in one pass. App traces give per-request code-level visibility that's been useful for chasing down regressions after deploys. Pricing is realistic for small and mid-sized teams in a way the Datadog and New Relic tier just isn't.
What do you dislike about the product?
The UI is the main thing keeping this from a 5. It feels at least one generation behind where modern observability tooling has landed. Navigation is still mostly link-and-page-load rather than the fast, filterable, drill-down interactions you get from newer tools. Time-range manipulation, faceted filtering, and dashboard composition could all be much more interactive. None of this affects the quality of the underlying data Scout collects, but a UI/UX refresh would be the biggest single improvement they could ship.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Pinpointing N+1s and slow ActiveRecord queries before they turn into production incidents, and shortening the path from "something looks off" to "here's the line of code." Having traces, errors, and logs correlated in one place cuts context-switching during incidents. For a Rails-heavy stack, it's deeply integrated, and so it gives a better signal-to-noise ratio than the general-purpose APM vendors, with a fraction of the configuration overhead.

Save time on optimization and identifying the slow code

    Reviewed on Aug 23, 2023
    Review provided by G2
What do you like best about the product?
It gives you all the tools you need. You can analyze application performance, background jobs, database performance. you get traces of real users using your apps or APIs, ... What's not to like?
What do you dislike about the product?
The only thing that could be improved is pricing. In my opinion, it's not up to par with some tools the bigger cloud providers have which do more or less the same thing. But, it's still worth it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Identifying slow parts of our API and background jobs. Identifying N+1 queries. Identifying slow database queries. Compare real traces from users so you get actual insights into real data not just aggregates.
