If you are an AWS Free Tier customer with a free plan, you are eligible to subscribe to this offer. You can use free credits to cover the cost of eligible AWS infrastructure. See AWS Free Tier for more details. If you created an AWS account before July 15th, 2025, and qualify for the Legacy AWS Free Tier, Amazon EC2 charges for Micro instances are free for up to 750 hours per month. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, so pricing scales with the compute capacity you choose. The software itself is a ready-to-run web server and reverse proxy image. Smaller shared-CPU instances (the t2, t3, and t3a families) suit lighter workloads. General-purpose m3, m4, m5, and related families (including local-storage, network-optimized, and bare-metal variants) cover heavier needs. Rates rise as vCPU and memory increase, up to full metal instances. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs, with no upfront commitment.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one hour of billing cover for a given instance type?
Each dimension bills per hour that the matching EC2 instance runs. One hour means one clock hour of a single running virtual machine at that size. The rate reflects the vCPU and memory of that instance family, from shared-CPU t2/t3 sizes up to bare-metal variants.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges accrue only while the instance runs. A stopped or powered-off instance stops accruing the hourly software fee. Underlying AWS storage or other AWS resource fees may still apply separately, but the software itself meters running hours only.
How do I pick between the shared-CPU and general-purpose instance dimensions?
Shared-CPU t2, t3, and t3a sizes fit lighter or intermittent web traffic. General-purpose m3, m4, m5, and related families suit steady, heavier workloads. Local-storage, network-optimized, and bare-metal variants target specific compute or throughput needs. You pick one instance type and pay its hourly rate.
