Grafana: Open Source Monitoring and Visualization Platform on AWS
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour for the software, and the rate depends on the EC2 instance type you choose to run Grafana. The thirteen options map to AWS instance families with different CPU and memory profiles. Burstable types like t3.small, t3a.small, t2.medium, t3.medium, and t3a.medium suit lighter or variable workloads. Compute-focused types like c5.large, c5a.large, and c6a.large, plus general-purpose types like m5.large, m4.large, m5a.large, m6a.large, and m7a.medium, offer steadier capacity. Billing runs while the instance runs; stopping it pauses charges. Pick the size matching your monitoring load.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate cover, and what AWS costs are separate?
The hourly rate covers the Grafana software licence for the instance type you select. It meters running time only. Underlying AWS charges, such as EBS storage and data transfer, are billed separately by AWS. A stopped instance still incurs those AWS storage fees even when software charges pause.
Am I charged the software rate when I stop the Grafana instance?
Software charges accrue only while the instance runs. Stopping the instance from the EC2 console pauses the hourly software charge. You can restart it later using "Start instance". Note that stopped instances may still incur AWS storage fees for the attached volumes.
How does switching between the burstable and compute instance types affect my bill?
You pay the hourly rate tied to the single instance type you run. Only one type bills at a time. Switching means stopping one instance and launching another, so the new rate applies going forward. Larger CPU and memory profiles carry higher hourly rates. The guide recommends t3.small as a starting point.

Grafana is a self-hosted learning management system. This CloudFormation template provisions an EC2-based deployment with IAM and optional Route 53 integration, enabling secure, scalable online learning environments.
CloudFormation Template (CFT)
AWS CloudFormation templates are JSON or YAML-formatted text files that simplify provisioning and management on AWS. The templates describe the service or application architecture you want to deploy, and AWS CloudFormation uses those templates to provision and configure the required services (such as Amazon EC2 instances or Amazon RDS DB instances). The deployed application and associated resources are called a "stack."
