Instead, each rate matches a specific EC2 instance size and family, such as general-purpose (m-series, t-series), compute-optimized (c-series), memory-optimized (r-series, x-series), storage (d-series, i-series), and accelerated (g-series, p-series) instances. Larger instances with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware carry higher hourly rates. You control cost by selecting the instance that fits your workload and running it only as long as needed.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
Each hourly rate covers one running Amazon EC2 instance of the type you pick. The rate bundles the Debian Linux image and vendor support. You are billed per hour that the instance runs. Each instance you launch meters separately at the rate for its instance type.
The software charge meters running time only. A stopped instance does not accrue the hourly software rate. You still may pay separate AWS charges for attached storage while stopped. Charges resume when you restart the instance and continue for each hour it runs.
You pay the hourly rate tied to whichever instance type is running. Moving to an instance with more CPU, memory, or specialized hardware applies that type's higher rate for hours it runs. The change is not automatic; you choose the instance when you launch or resize.
