Great project but definitely not enterprise-ready yet

  • August 14, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Pros:
- easy to admin and use
- most platforms supported
- supports per-user and per-group customizations (like auth and routing), SAML and custom auth
- responsive support team
What do you dislike about the product?
Cons:
- in a cluster configuration it's impossible to customize all member servers from a single interface - admin UI switches you to a certain server and then you need to switch back to the cluster configuration; can't see all connected users (have to switch between cluster members)
- you can't restrict vpn connections to certain IPs/subnets for a user or group
- can't tweak vpn connections to fight against DPIs
- support team is responsive but helpless - all our feature requests were ignored by their developers
- no publicly available development roadmap
- inability to track vpn user activities as compliance requires
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Secure access to our environments

Reliable VPN Service That My Company Is Using To Let Employees Work From Home

  • August 14, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
What I love most is how easy it is to use! When I’m at home and need to access my company’s internal network, it takes just a few seconds to connect. Unlike other software products we use, the licenses aren’t tied to the number of employees, but rather to the number of concurrent users. Since our employees typically work from home just one or two days a week, this approach makes much better use of our licenses.
What do you dislike about the product?
I remember that installing and getting it to run for the first time was quite a hassle, but that was over six years ago. I’m confident they’ve made significant improvements since then.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
OpenVPN Access Server enables our employees to securely and efficiently access the company’s internal network, ensuring that all data is encrypted and protected.

What do you like best about the product?
We found OpenVPN to be a reliable and scalable VPN solution with good security features. The user interface is web based and easy to use. We found the split tunneling feature very useful not having to route all traffic back through our network.
What do you dislike about the product?
The initial setup and configuration can still be complex and the licensing costs can add up.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It has provided a secure method for our employees to access company resources and data from outside the network.

Provides better latency and connects remotely

  • August 09, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We connect to the OpenVPN using a VPN for any computer not directly connected to our local server. This is necessary because multiple offices need to use the software developed on the local server.

How has it helped my organization?

We use OpenVPN Access Server on every device that needs to connect to the server. It's the best way to achieve better latency and connect remotely.

What is most valuable?

It is easy to use. We connect to the server and launch our software in between.

What needs improvement?

It should automate our processes. Our developers continuously improve the software, but we'll continue using PowerBuilder unless we undertake a significant project to migrate to a different platform, possibly Java. Additionally, we need RPA software. I've also looked into Twilio, which provides automated SMS alerts. We're assessing how useful that service could be for our needs.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We need RPA software and automatic testing software to make any improvements.

We want to scale internationally. To do this, we'll create a blank copy of our software, replicate our database architecture schema, and then prepare it for the new location. Additionally, we plan to implement automation tools, such as RPA and automated testing, to catch up on the technological aspects we've been lagging. Since our current software is built on PowerBuilder, starting from scratch is challenging. Therefore, we'll continue using it while integrating new resources to improve our system.

It is suitable for small to medium businesses. We have three locations: one laboratory and two offices. We have approximately 120 to 130 employees across these locations.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very easy, and one system administrator did it.

What was our ROI?

It's efficient. Connecting to the local server without it would be much more difficult. Every employee who works from another office has to use it, so it's essential.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is not that expensive. It makes it more efficient for some people's jobs.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.
