Provides better latency and connects remotely

  • August 09, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We connect to the OpenVPN using a VPN for any computer not directly connected to our local server. This is necessary because multiple offices need to use the software developed on the local server.

How has it helped my organization?

We use OpenVPN Access Server on every device that needs to connect to the server. It's the best way to achieve better latency and connect remotely.

What is most valuable?

It is easy to use. We connect to the server and launch our software in between.

What needs improvement?

It should automate our processes. Our developers continuously improve the software, but we'll continue using PowerBuilder unless we undertake a significant project to migrate to a different platform, possibly Java. Additionally, we need RPA software. I've also looked into Twilio, which provides automated SMS alerts. We're assessing how useful that service could be for our needs.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We need RPA software and automatic testing software to make any improvements.

We want to scale internationally. To do this, we'll create a blank copy of our software, replicate our database architecture schema, and then prepare it for the new location. Additionally, we plan to implement automation tools, such as RPA and automated testing, to catch up on the technological aspects we've been lagging. Since our current software is built on PowerBuilder, starting from scratch is challenging. Therefore, we'll continue using it while integrating new resources to improve our system.

It is suitable for small to medium businesses. We have three locations: one laboratory and two offices. We have approximately 120 to 130 employees across these locations.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was very easy, and one system administrator did it.

What was our ROI?

It's efficient. Connecting to the local server without it would be much more difficult. Every employee who works from another office has to use it, so it's essential.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is not that expensive. It makes it more efficient for some people's jobs.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

What do you like best about the product?
Ease of standing it up and general stability. Authentication integrates well with our SSO and the user portal is easy for users to navigate to get the right agent and profile to get connected to the VPN.
What do you dislike about the product?
Having to manually manage its updates, etc. But that's why this is the more economical choice.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We needed a simple, inexpensive way to keep our people secure on unsecured networks. OpenVPN Access Server was quick and easy to stand up and worked seamlessly so we didn't have to spend a lot of time supporting users who were trying to use it.

What do you like best about the product?
OpenVPN keeps our company connected without any major issues and provides a straightforward way for our users to connect.
What do you dislike about the product?
Downtime and support options. Downtime is expected and thankfully OpenVPN is often up and running again the same day if the issue isn't user error.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use OpenVPN for our remote employees to securely access the company network which is usually a flawless connection.

What do you like best about the product?
Intuitive web interface for managing users, servers, and groups
End-to-end encryption with powerful algorithms like AES-256
Two-factor authentication for enhanced security
Protection against DNS and IP leaks
What do you dislike about the product?
Although the web interface is intuitive, the initial setup can be complex for users not familiar with VPNs and networks. The documentation is comprehensive, but it can be difficult to follow for beginners.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Protection against hackers and prying eyes: OpenVPN encrypts your internet traffic, making it unreadable to anyone trying to intercept it. Online anonymity: OpenVPN masks your IP address, allowing you to browse the internet anonymously and bypass geographical restrictions. Protection against DNS and IP leaks: OpenVPN prevents DNS and IP leaks, ensuring that your location and online activity remain confidential.

What do you like best about the product?
О OpenVPN Access Server was easily deployed in a cloud environment. User configuration, integration with the authentication system and the ease that customers have in using the connection client are great benefits of this solution.
What do you dislike about the product?
When scaling the use of the solution, its cost/benefit begins to be debatable in relation to other more complex solutions.

Allows for quick implementation

A simple yet solid non-cloud solution

  • March 04, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Setup and maintenance are easy enough. License management and license model are features I like the most.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some trivial changes require restarting access server software. This causes all clients to lose connectivity and require a new login. For connections like SSH this is an inconvenience.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Provides an easy to maintain an manage solution for providing access to company internal network.

Stable VPN solution

  • March 01, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
What I appreciate the most about OpenVPN Access Server is its remarkable stability. We implemented a self-hosted server in our company over four years ago, and we have encountered no issues thus far. It operates swiftly and reliably.
What do you dislike about the product?
What I like least in my experience with OpenVPN server is the web interface for creating access groups. While the interface allows you to create multiple groups with different routes to various networks, it does not allow you to name those routes. Consequently, over time, administration becomes quite challenging, as one cannot remember which network range corresponds to each.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In our company, we use AWS as our cloud provider, and within AWS, we have multiple private networks with numerous servers and applications. Thanks to the use of OpenVPN, our employees can access these resources privately and securely.
