Saves at least 40% time and it's very flexible and easy to use

  • January 06, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Its use case involves protecting our external services in the business.

It is a necessity because of the different security standards that our company has to comply with.

How has it helped my organization?

Our services are protected, and I have not seen any breaches that would impact our systems. The systems are stable, and I can very clearly see all of the malicious actors outside trying to access our systems.

It helps with troubleshooting immensely because the solution protects not only from threat actors outside of our business but also from internal actors or partner clients accessing our systems. Those requests are also validated inside Radware Alteon. I can see client partners or users accessing some systems in the wrong way or any misconfiguration inside our systems. Radware Alteon prevents our systems from breaking down because of those wrong requests. It has saved at least 40% to 50% time.

The integrated application protection on the other side of the load balancer is great. There is the caveat that it is not easily pre-configurable on that side, but everything after that is easy. When the services are up and running, the feedback, the insight, and the forensics of the happenings inside are very easy to understand and work with. The system automatically suggests what needs to be configured and what can be mitigated or refined in configuration. All of those are making my day easier.

Its implementation time took about half a year, and it took us about a year and a half to realize its benefits.

What is most valuable?

I find the best features to be the flexibility and ease of use. The configuration is very straightforward.

What needs improvement?

In my experience, Alteon is very dynamic software. They keep integrating new features that sometimes break our production, but we use clustered systems, so we can test those software releases. However, sometimes they take a while to reach us. We have had to work with Radware to remedy issues on their side that they have verified. On the other hand, they have been very proactive in remedying those problems. We have solved some critical issues within a month, but the release verification channel requires some updates.

The support channel is also an issue. Moving through tiered support can be challenging at times. Even when I go through the authenticated portal where I have registered my devices with their serial numbers and all known details, they ask to verify the specified device. I have already included that in the ticket support system.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Alteon since around 2018. It has probably been five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have experienced some issues. I would rate it a nine out of ten for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is hard to tell, but I have had some performance issues. I cannot say whether they were because of Radware. I would rate it a nine out of ten for scalability.

We have a hybrid environment. It is very spread out. In terms of its users, we have tiered access. We have solution appliance administrators, and then there are users who monitor their services inside the clients. So, we have a couple of administrators and the rest are application admins. Overall, we have less than ten people.

How are customer service and support?

In general, I would rate their support a nine out of ten because the first level of support sometimes requires re-verification. We have to escalate a bit to have some momentum. However, local third-party support is reachable for us at any moment. There is a dedicated expert answering even the toughest questions. If needed, he re-routes us to the Radware support, and he takes care of the support communication for us.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

In the current scope of systems, I have not used any other solution. I have used different systems in different projects but not in this context.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is local, not cloud-based. The deployment time to fully implement was half a year.

In terms of implementation strategy, we are very step-based when it comes to infrastructure. We evaluate and point out our needs. We rely heavily on third-party support. Radware is not directly supporting us in Latvia. We have third-party support locally, and they help us very much in this regard.

Radware provides free training on their site, but we heavily rely on third-party support. They do not hide anything from us. For every task and request, they freely advise us on how to perform better. The online portal also supports that motion.

After we established our requirements such as what we wanted to protect and where we wanted to deploy it, moving services to the solution took up to half a year.

Our implementation is not very advanced. There is an option to include very heavily scripted environments, but our use case is very straightforward. We have some customizations, but new team members require a month or maybe two to get onboarded. This is generally the time a user requires to get familiar with any system.

In our field of work, maintenance is almost a must. We do quarterly updates and health checks to verify that systems are working as intended. Maintenance is very fast, but the preparation work is the worst. We have to read all the changes and what is affecting us or not. Sometimes these releases or software updates break something, but in general, the maintenance tasks are very easy. They take about 15 minutes.

What about the implementation team?

Our team consisted of two people. I was not the one who did the deployment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is not the priciest and it is not the cheapest. For our solution, it was right in the middle of price performance.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We have reviewed others. We actually have a solution with support from another vendor, but we are not utilizing them or paying for another solution.

What other advice do I have?

We are using Alteon's Integrated WAF. We are in the process of evaluating moving to the cloud for more distributed protection from DDoS attacks and other threat actors.

I would definitely recommend it. It is very understandable. The interfaces and descriptions of various settings are straightforward. There are some misunderstandings here and there, but the basics to get it working are great. Overall, I would rate Alteon a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Simplify load balancing with intuitive GUI and robust analytics

  • December 03, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I am using Radware Alteon as a load balancer. It's used to simplify balancing connections between servers for a larger application in my organization. This allows me to manipulate many applications to better serve my organization.

How has it helped my organization?

It provides us with logs about all of our application's transactions, enabling us to trace problems. The analytics help us pinpoint the root cause of issues like TLS problems and trace previously unanswered requests, enabling solutions with given analytics abilities.

What is most valuable?

The simplicity of the GUI is what I like the most about Radware Alteon. It provides logs about all of our application's transactions, which allows us to trace problems and identify issues such as TLS problems. The analytics help us pinpoint the root cause of various issues, enabling solutions with given analytics abilities.

What needs improvement?

I know they are working on it, however, I would like to see an improved community presence, similar to the one for their main competitor, F5. There are forums with questions and answers from customers, which is currently lacking for Alteon. More materials are difficult to find in the network, so increasing community and documentation would be beneficial.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Radware Alteon for several years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the solution is good. There have been no notable issues related to downtime or bugs.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate the scalability of the product at a seven.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support deserves an eight out of ten. Their customer service is quite reliable.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup was easy and not so complex. It took a couple of days with three people involved.

What about the implementation team?

The implementation was handled by our internal team with three individuals involved.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Radware Alteon. If someone wants an effective product with good capabilities, they should consider this solution.

I rate the product eight out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Automated threat detection and blocking helps us manage our security with limited resources

  • November 14, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use Alteon to secure our main web applications against web-based attacks such as SQL injections and DDoS attacks. We have around 36 VIPs on Radware, and we protect all our published sites, including those for FNU.

How has it helped my organization?

Alteon’s analytics has helped us save time when troubleshooting. It has given us greater visibility for troubleshooting the issues that cropped up in our environment.

Alteon has definitely helped reduce our maintenance overhead.

What is most valuable?

The best thing about Alteon is its automated threat detection and blocking. The university has resource limitations. I am the only one working for the security section, looking after seven products, including Alteon. The automatic blocking of threats and detections is crucial for us. Because there are a lot of things going on, we sometimes miss or do not see the detections on time. So, the most useful thing for us is to have a WAF that automatically blocks anything unusual or suspicious.

It is efficient and low maintenance. Once you set it up, you do not have to go back and look into it. It gives us peace of mind that if something comes up, it will block that.

What needs improvement?

There is room for improvement in reducing the number of false positives I receive. We could benefit from more configuration options to avoid these false positives, which can be overwhelming for a security analyst. It can be a bit difficult for a security analyst to go back and understand why a particular service was stopped. The false positives that I received can be a bit complex in nature.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Alteon for our web applications for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have not seen many issues with lagging or crashing. The box works well, and it either denies or allows traffic as expected. We have been using the same box since 2020. The boxes are quite robust.

How are customer service and support?

I interacted with their support while applying our security policies. I was finding it challenging because we had false positives and some of the genuine university services were getting blocked. We have some legacy services. They were showing up as a threat. With the help of their support, we whitelisted those services.

The support is quite helpful. We do remote sessions and address issues timely. I would rate their support an eight out of ten considering the time difference challenges.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

This is the second WAF that our organization is using. We used Barracuda WAF from 2018 to 2020. From a security perspective, Alteon has aggressive measures for security. At the end of the day, it gives you peace of mind.

Alteon has a better way of managing misconfigurations from the administrator's point of view. If I am creating a security policy, a VIP, or a new service and doing something wrong or misconfiguring something, it does not allow me to do that. That is one of the greatest advantages of Alteon, whereas Barracuda does not verify if your configuration is correct.

Price was the main reason for switching to Alteon. Barracuda charged us triple for the renewal, prompting the shift.

How was the initial setup?

It was a bit difficult for us because Radware is quite aggressive in terms of configuration. We did not have the resources and training at the time. We were trying to implement a new product, and we found it to be a bit difficult.

The initial setup took about a month, but fully integrating services that were in Barracuda took us until last year. It took us a while to migrate all the services that were there.

It took us some time to realize its benefits. When we set up Alteon, we had a separate team of people looking after it. I was not the main person at that time. We had the initial setup done in 2020, and after that, the responsibility was shifted to me. I could see that there were certain things that we could do for better security of our web applications. We did have to do some fine-tuning to get the complete benefits of Alteon.

The trainings were purchased early last year, and I am now trained in using Radware Alteon services. The training did not take long. It took about five to seven days, but these days were not fully dedicated to the training. I was doing my work, and whenever I had free time, I would start the video and get trained. The training videos that are provided are quite straightforward and easy to understand.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The Radware team we work with always gives us the best price. As a university, our budget is limited. We need something that is the best solution but with a low or economical pricing. We are getting a better price than competitors. The shift from Barracuda to Alteon was primarily due to cost efficiency.

It is very economical, and the price fits our business needs.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend switching to Alteon but ensure training is completed before migration. This will ease the learning curve.

I would rate Alteon a nine out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

The integrated application protection has helped secure our critical web applications

  • November 07, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We're an agency of a state government in India, and our primary use case of Radware Alteon in our organization is for load balancing and application protection.

We have to load-balance among multiple departments within the state government. Around 12 people manage Alteon, and the solution covers roughly 20 departments.

How has it helped my organization?

Our agency launched several programs recently. For example, they're encouraging people to plant trees, and they need to upload a picture of the tree to the portal within a given window. Our previous load-balancing system failed to overcome that challenge.

We needed improved application performance and availability during peak traffic. Traffic needed to be distributed evenly across data centers to prevent overloading and provide visibility into real-time performance and metrics. The government agency chose Alteon for its advanced load-balancing and application optimization features. There were immediate benefits in load-balancing and application performance.

What is most valuable?

Valuable features of Radware Alteon include global server load balancing, SSL offloading, Layer 7 load balancing, automation and traffic scaling, real-time analytics, and reporting.

Alteon's integrated application protection has helped us. As a state government agency, we face increasing threats and need to secure our critical web applications.

Our finance websites are the primary targets for DDoS, SQL injections, and other sophisticated attacks. Traditional security is insufficient to defend against the volume and complexity of the attacks. We need protection against attacks on the application and infrastructure layers and DDoS attacks. Alteon offers visibility and actionable insights into each security event.

Radware has free training available on their website. I've completed a few training courses and found them very helpful for me in my daily work. The basic course covering the UI takes a week, and it was easy to understand. When we're troubleshooting a scenario, we can check the Alteon knowledge base articles. The combination of training and the knowledge base shortens the learning curve.

What needs improvement?

Alteon's user interface and usability can be improved by providing a more modern and streamlined design and focusing on simplifying workflows in the UI.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Radware Alteon for nearly four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate Radware Alteon's stability nine out of 10. We recently faced a GUI bug that disabled some options, but it was resolved by updating the device to a higher version. In the latest version, we had fewer GUI options, but it wasn't a major issue. We can still access those features from the command line.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate Alteon's scalability 10 out of 10. It scales well within our organization.

How are customer service and support?

I rate Radware support 10 out of 10. The Radware support team is very knowledgeable and quick in providing assistance.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before Radware Alteon, the organization used a Windows server load-balancing solution that came with the operating system. Previously, those who worked faced time-consuming processes and reporting.

How was the initial setup?

Alteon's initial setup was straightforward, and the UI was easy to understand. We had a few challenges integrating features, but Alteon's support helped us resolve them quickly. The only maintenance is regular updates.

What was our ROI?

Using Radware Alteon has reduced the time we spend implementing load-balancing by about 70 to 80 percent. Setting up reporting and load-balancing on our previous solution took much more time.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Our government agency opted for Radware Alteon due to its affordability and efficiency. While I can't say precisely how much it costs the organization, the price per device. In India, we always look for affordable products, so I assume Alteon is cost-effective because the government chose it.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Radware Alteon nine out of 10. I recommend Radware Alteon because it offers comprehensive features for optimizing application delivery, improving network performance, and enhancing security. The basic training can be accessed through the Alteon website, which is user-friendly and helpful.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

An efficient, robust, and cost-effective load balancer

  • September 27, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Alteon is used in our environment for the application traffic from the customers. The traffic is coming from outside the network. It then comes to the firewall. From the firewall, it goes to the load balancer which sends the traffic to different application servers in a distributed environment.

How has it helped my organization?

There is no lack of connectivity. The traffic is going smoothly. The handshake is happening. SSL offloading is happening perfectly on the device, and it is going to the application server. The response is being sent to the customers within milliseconds. We have done a hardware refresh. Earlier, we were using the 6 GB memory box, and we are now using a 12 GB memory box with the same features.

The downtime is minimal. The product is robust, and there are no issues that we have faced. We are running N-1 releases or the latest releases. The support from Radware is fantastic.

The downtime is very little. We have not faced any issues. Because we are using it in a cluster environment, we have redundancy built in there, so we do not face any issues.

Alteon’s analytics have saved us time when troubleshooting. We understand the traffic coming from various customers and analyze it. It has saved about 15% to 20% of our time.

What is most valuable?

SSL offloading feature is one of the most important features. Traffic distribution is also done very well by Radware.

What needs improvement?

Radware should work on the vulnerabilities part. There are third-party security solutions that do the security vulnerability assessment (VA). The assessment part needs to be worked on and improved. There should be more solutions. If any issue comes up and if any vulnerability is reported, the Radware team should do an R&D on that and work on that. They should give the solution to the customer.

Everything else is perfect. We are not facing any issues with the product.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Alteon in our environment for almost seven to eight years. We have done a hardware refresh. Earlier, we were using the 5208 XL model, and now, we are using the 5208S model.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of the box is a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. There is no problem. I would rate it a ten out of ten for scalability.

It is being used at multiple locations. About three to four people are working with Alteon, but for the application, we have a big team. Our customers are enterprises.

How are customer service and support?

Their technical support from India is very good. However, when it is nighttime in India, it is a bit challenging because their support comes from outside India, most probably Israel. Sometimes, we face a challenge when the support is given by the team out of India. It takes time. Due to the language issues, it takes time for them to understand the issue, so the time to resolve the issue or work on an issue increases.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were previously using the F5 load balancer, and then we switched to Alteon. Alteon is working fine for us, and we have not faced any issues with it.

We switched because of the features and pricing. Pricing plays the most important role in procurement. Alteon's pricing is competitive, and that is why we have moved on from F5 to Alteon. F5 is also not as flexible as Alteon.

How was the initial setup?

It is an on-prem solution. Its deployment was straightforward. It was not complex.

We were able to migrate from old devices to new devices in minutes. We just copied the configuration from the old box and replicated it to the new box. It does not take much time. The releases and the patches that we deploy are also very efficient.

Replicating to a box took 20 to 30 minutes. Putting the operating system and replicating the configuration does not take more than 30 minutes.

It requires maintenance. When a new patch comes, we implement it. We plan a downtime and implement it. Even though we have a redundant node, we take downtime to be on the safer side.

The solution has a minimum downtime, and the maintenance window is also short. It is not big.

What about the implementation team?

We did not receive training from Radware on how to use Alteon. We are doing it by ourselves. It is an on-the-job kind of training.

Overall, two to three people were involved.

What was our ROI?

It is difficult to calculate the ROI because the Alteon load balancer is one part of the investment. There is the whole network and server infrastructure. We have not calculated the ROI, but it plays a very key role. The traffic is seamlessly distributed to the application servers. The application processes it and gives a response.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

It is cost-efficient. That is why we have gone with Alteon. As a product, it is efficient and robust. We have not faced any issues with the device.

What other advice do I have?

I would recommend Radware Alteon because it is a very smooth solution. Someone who wants to deploy an application load balancer in their environment can go for this box without any thoughts or concerns. The box is very scalable. It is a very smooth system. It handles the traffic very comfortably. You will not face any issues with the box.

Our application is an in-house application. It does not go over the Internet. We do not have any cloud connectivity. We also do not have out-of-the-box application integrations in our environment. Alteon is supporting the SNMPv3 standard for sending the SNMP trap to the outside box. That is the only integration we have done, and it is working fine. We have not integrated with OpenShift, Ansible, etc.

I would rate Radware Alteon a nine out of ten. There are only two areas of improvement. The vulnerability part needs improvement and the support given at night time from outside the country needs improvement. It takes longer to get an issue resolved with the support team located out of India.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

  • September 25, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Radware technology ensures the availability of all our applications. I represent a government institution that administers elections, so we have several critical systems that must stay online. In addition to Alteon, we use CloudWAF, CloudDDoS, and FireProof.

How has it helped my organization?

We began seeing benefits immediately. This technology is necessary for availability in IT. Alteon helps us troubleshoot issues. It provides us statistics on application, server, and load balancer response that we can use to identify problems or latency.

What is most valuable?

Alteon's integrated application protection helps us to protect our endpoints and our systems. CloudWAF is user-friendly and can be deployed with ERT. The learning time and processes you need to pass through are easy with CloudWAF.

What needs improvement?

Alteon's user interface could be improved. F5's user interface is more user-friendly than Radware's, but Radware's hardware performs better.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have used Alteon since 2008.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate Radware Alteon 10 out of 10 for stability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

I rate Radware Alteon nine out of 10 for scalability.

How are customer service and support?

I rate Radware support nine out of 10. They're high quality and work fast.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I've also used F5, but Alteon is better. It also has better bandwidth, failover, and overall performance. Alteon is also more stable and requires fewer updates.

How was the initial setup?

Deploying Alteon was easy because I have experience in the load balancer world. It takes two engineers about four hours to deploy fully. We had help from a partner at the platform.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Alteon is priced competitively with F5, but F5 does much more marketing in this country.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Radware Alteon nine out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I use Radware LinkProof to optimize our network by balancing multiple WAN links. It ensures uninterrupted access to applications by automatically redirecting traffic from failed or congested links.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of Radware LinkProof for traffic distribution is its DNS management capability. Similar to Linux's feature for managing DNS requests, LinkProof can dynamically redirect traffic by responding to DNS queries with the appropriate IP addresses. This ensures seamless access to applications even if the primary server fails, improving overall reliability and customer experience.

What needs improvement?

Radware LinkProof's marketing efforts need improvement to raise awareness about its capabilities and compete effectively in the market.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Radware LinkProof for about three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I find Radware LinkProof to be extremely stable, rarely encountering technical issues or downtime among my clients in Sri Lanka and elsewhere. Its reliability helps minimize network downtime by swiftly redirecting traffic during attacks or overload situations, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity and smooth operations.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Radware LinkProof is technically sound and scalable, capable of handling increased loads of traffic by adjusting licensing.

How are customer service and support?

Radware's support is excellent, with knowledgeable sales engineers who go above and beyond to assist. Their technical guides are helpful and their support team is responsive. I would rate the support as a ten out of ten.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

Configuring and managing Radware LinkProof is straightforward and efficient. With its user-friendly interface, configuration can typically be completed within days, depending on the customer's requirements. The process is intuitive, making it easy to set up and manage network settings, including rate management features, to meet specific needs. The initial setup and configuration of can typically be completed within a day, including overall integrations.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I would say Radware LinkProof falls into the mid-range pricing category. It is not cheap, but it is also not overly expensive.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Among similar tools, Radware LinkProof stands out as the best on the market for WAN load balancing. While some companies use firewalls or other solutions for load balancing, LinkProof offers a more comprehensive and competitive solution, especially for WAN balancing.

What other advice do I have?

Radware LinkProof improves WAN traffic management by optimizing application traffic across multiple WAN links. It automatically monitors the health of these links and redirects traffic to ensure uninterrupted connectivity, enhancing reliability and performance.

For disaster recovery, I configure Radware LinkProof with its global load-balancing feature. This involves setting up two or three appliances in different locations. They communicate via health checks, and if one data center goes down, traffic is automatically redirected to the available center.

I highly recommend Radware LinkProof, especially for data centers. It is a comprehensive solution that combines load balancing, application load balancing, and more in a single appliance, making it cost-effective and efficient. For enterprise-level customers, it is worth considering.

Overall, I would rate the product as a nine out of ten.

Increases the availability of our critical infrastructure and services

  • August 02, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use it as a source for the delivery of services and we have many applications. It is the core of our business in terms of supporting those applications.

How has it helped my organization?

It has improved our organization in terms of the availability of our critical systems by increasing the level of protection for those systems. We are a critical-infrastructure company, and the services have many internal clients that have experienced that improvement.

Our Alteon system is configured in high availability and it helps us have a very productive system. We have it on one device that is in contingency for when we want to apply changes. For example, we can do new parameterization that can be applied to the device that has Alteon in backup, do tests there, and almost automatically synchronize the changes with our main Alteon. In other words, we have a very versatile and high-availability solution.

In addition, the health status information, with its highly detailed reporting, has saved us time on troubleshooting. We have the precise information needed that helps us find different types of situations. It has saved us about 50 percent of our time when troubleshooting.

What is most valuable?

At the corporate level, it is a very effective tool and it’s very simple. It shows us reports on the state of health of the services that we have configured, in terms of load balancing.

What needs improvement?

It really seems to us that Alteon meets expectations. It is not a solution that needs a high level of expertise. Although certain functions can become complex, only a minimum level of knowledge is needed.

Recently, our team was talking about the things you can customize in Alteon and the level of programming that doing so demands. I would like to see more information on how to customize the programming and troubleshoot.

For how long have I used the solution?

I am new to the company and have been using Radware Alteon for six months, but the tool has been in use for about five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is completely stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In our company, it is implemented in multiple services, multiple applications, and multiple physical sites.  Alteon functions in high-availability mode, in separate data centers.

We always have plans to expand our use of it for new applications and services.

How are customer service and support?

In the time I have been with this company we have had to open one customer service ticket. It was handled well and immediately. They serve you quickly.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

I wasn't involved in the initial deployment, but I received virtual training from someone at Radware when I started working with this company. A month later, I did the basic Alteon certification. It took me about two months to understand the magnitude of the benefits we have from using the Alteon load balancers.

My colleagues who were here before Alteon told me that it took them five or six months before they received any formal training, and when they received the training, they became more familiar with and had a deeper understanding of the Alteon operating model.

If you are thinking of switching to Alteon but worry about the learning curve, Alteon's management is very simple and intuitive after you acquire a certain level of basic knowledge. The most complex part is the configuration, but that is usually done by the supplier, so I don't think that that would be part of the learning curve. Overall, the platform is easy to learn when it comes to managing it.

The solution doesn't require almost any maintenance on our side. It is not constantly in preventive maintenance, so it has reduced our maintenance overhead. There might be some version update scheduling, but there is not much to do.

What was our ROI?

I am not in the financial area where I can talk about the return on investment in numerical terms, but from a technological point of view, we believe that the investment made in Alteon can be justified. I believe that investment was recovered in the first year. Its service is so satisfactory that the new budgets are being pre-approved for Alteon's renewal. The fact that we continue to use it also says something about the benefits from our investment.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The price conforms to what the tool provides. It is not an inexpensive tool and not all companies can afford an ADC solution such as Alteon. However, it justifies its price with the options it offers. And there are no additional costs other than the standard rates, renewal, and maintenance.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Although I wasn't working for this company at the time, they told me that they evaluated F5. From what I understand, the differences were in the functionality and accessibility of Alteon’s assets. I don't know about the cost comparison and value, but after doing the proofs of concept, our company was happier with the functionality of Alteon.

What other advice do I have?

If you are evaluating Alteon, it is because you are thinking about having an ADC for service delivery. It's a tool that is essential for increasing the availability and performance of critical systems and the delivery of critical tools. Alteon definitely balances performance between applications.

The greatest lesson I have learned from using it has been discovering that it is essential for the availability and performance that applications require. It is not only simply about looking at the disks; you also need to deliver load balancing and increase availability, and that is what tools such as Alteon deliver.

Alteon has met the expectations we had for it. In fact, we are already thinking of an update, a renewal for next year. It is a solution of critical importance for us. It is effective and complies with what we need when it comes to the protection and balancing of the systems.

Provides high availability and fault tolerance for web applications, while operating them securely

  • August 02, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We implement the load balancer for everything related to the input and output of connectivity services to or from the internet. We have two channels of connectivity to the internet through which we publish services.

With load-balancing, we have the ability to receive traffic using both channels, through Alteon, and when one of them is affected, we're able to access the internet through the other. We already have that part configured.

We also use it for security issues regarding the WAF, trying and applying policies for companies, so that our web applications published to the internet are covered by that security layer.

How has it helped my organization?

The two use cases I mentioned are very valuable for our port activity. We must have our applications and services running 24/7 and balance the connectivity and the applications. Also, in terms of security, using Alteon means our services are available, with high quality, to external and internal users. This is one of the reasons I give a high rating to the abilities we have with Alteon.

It has enabled us to have high availability and fault tolerance in operating our applications securely. This has created a lot of value in our IT area around the services we provide to the organization.

Time savings are another area where the solution has helped us a lot. In particular, the visualization has been important for troubleshooting and error resolution. We have been able to find clearer information or more details that are important to solving these issues when they arise. It has reduced our troubleshooting time by about 50 percent.

The time to value was practically immediate. The issues with load balancing of the applications, and the balancing of the internet service and the services provided, changed quickly. They were things that could be identified by our clients immediately. We started to see results from the implementation of the solution within a month, and in some cases, within 15 days or less. For example, the load balancer started acting immediately. We have great confidence in Radware solutions.

What is most valuable?

The integrated application protection provided by Alteon is very good. It really helps to avoid false positives in some cases. It provides important granularity to avoid a situation in which security or cybersecurity scenarios escape us. We are able to define policies and use techniques to contain these types of situations when they arise. As a security tool, it is very important.

Radware's solutions are very complete, and the integration among some of them—which, in some cases, we have not yet implemented but plan to—has given me peace of mind, knowing we have a robust tool with suitable solutions for all company cybersecurity issues.

What needs improvement?

We are in the process of updating our version of the solution, so judging what should be improved is difficult. But in some cases, the visualization takes a while, especially for mapping issues. I don't know if that issue will be corrected in the updated version, but that is an area where it could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Radware Alteon for more than two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a totally stable platform.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We are analyzing a possible integration of Alteon with another Radware product. Integrating another Radware product and being able to automate things is in line with the vision we have for the future, and we see that it can be done with Radware technology.

How are customer service and support?

The solution’s customer service and technical support are very good.

The only small problem was in the implementation. We had to wait for the availability of the implementers from Radware at one point. Things were a bit complex in the region in which they were traveling, so we had to postpone the implementation a little. It was a small problem that didn't have much impact.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have used other solutions at different companies, and there is a difference for the better with Alteon. I prefer it because of its policies, tools, and the methods it uses. It seems better from my point of view.

In my current company, we have not used any solutions other than Radware Alteon. We decided on Alteon because it offered us more granularity. Radware gives you more options when selecting the necessary features in terms of display, and allows you to fix or find bugs. Those were the big differences.

What was our ROI?

We have definitely seen ROI. The operation of the port has been a positive change. If there were a drop in internet service for one hour, we could lose quite a lot of money. Avoiding this type of situation with Radware Alteon, for a total of two or three hours, means our investment is fully recovered. Overall, in the past two years, failures have decreased.

The solution has allowed us to operate calmly and have a higher level of technological maturity with the controls it provides. It's not only we who feel that satisfaction, but our customers do too.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing seems reasonable to me for what the solution provides. It is within the parameters of this type of solution.

What other advice do I have?

We have two teams using the solution in separate locations. Apart from the administration that we do on the equipment, we have a support and maintenance contract for the solution. Currently, we have one person in charge of this area and another as a backup. Both are cybersecurity analysts. While it hasn't really reduced our maintenance, it has helped avoid generating additional costs.

I would advise you to focus first on service and then on important functionalities that can help your organization solve the problem of high availability of critical services. Radware Alteon can provide security for those same critical services.

Before Alteon, we believed that we had control of our security. With the implementation of its tools, we realized that we did, in fact, have a good security layer, but with the help of this tool, we have been able to go further and have a little more certainty and control in certain situations, especially around our web applications.
