Automated discovery has mapped critical application dependencies and builds business resilience

  • January 24, 2026
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

My main use case for Device42 is building the as-is for the customer while discovering the virtualization environment, whether it's Azure, VMware, or Hyper-V, and adding the VMs which are important to it and related to the application. After that, I build the Application Dependency Mapping (ADP) to show the customer which applications are more important for building business resilience, creating a report that highlights which business or application is the most critical.

A quick, specific example of how I used Device42 for this project is its main purpose, which is to build all the application dependency mapping. The tool captures all connections to or from the server and displays them in the file, which helped me immensely because it sniffs all the servers, collecting tons of data simultaneously. This capability is something the network team or security team could never manage within a similar time frame; capturing all this traffic at once would take them a much longer amount of time.

What is most valuable?

The best feature Device42 offers for me is the Application Dependency Mapping (ADP).

What stands out to me about the Application Dependency Mapping feature is both its accuracy and visualization.

Device42 positively impacts my organization because we build the as-is as soon as possible. It helps us avoid the delays that would occur if we went to the network team or security team, which would take much longer than what Device42 requires. With Device42, I captured more than 100 traffic entries in just two weeks, which was great.

What needs improvement?

An additional positive outcome I noticed is that it would be nice to have a video showing how to install and use Device42, as sometimes the documentation is not clear. A video would make it more efficient. Additionally, when I contacted support about a corrupted file as shown in the documentation for the ADP, the file they provided was not useful. Fortunately, a team member with experience assisted me with the BI server, which was better. Improving the documentation to be clearer and adding a video would be helpful.

I chose a nine for Device42 because it captures a lot of traffic in no time, which is perfect for me, and it is straightforward and easy to use. However, the documentation has not been updated in a while, so it needs updates. To reach a ten, I would prefer a feature that allows for smaller intervals for scheduling, ideally running every one hour or less, instead of just once a day at one o'clock AM.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Device42 since I just finished the project I started in August 2025, and we completed it in January 2026.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Device42 has been very stable in my experience.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Device42's scalability works well for me; if I want to add more resources, such as a Remote Collector for a new site, I can easily connect it to the main appliance.

How are customer service and support?

The customer support for Device42 is perfect; they respond in less than 24 hours and follow up, which I really appreciate.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, this work was done manually, extracting from RV tools, sniffing one by one, and using Watchdog, which was painful.

What was our ROI?

I have seen a return on investment from using Device42, as I was the only one who did the full exercise and it was easy for me. I worked about 8 to 16 hours per week, which was sufficient to deliver. This efficiency with time and resources was perfect; however, I do not know about the costs since I am not involved in that aspect.

What other advice do I have?

I have nothing else to add about my main use case or how Device42 helped in this project.

I do not have anything else to add about the features or any smaller details I found handy.

My advice for others looking into using Device42 is to follow the steps in the documents, and if you encounter any obstacles, do not hesitate to contact customer service, as they are perfect, supportive, and reply quickly.

An additional thought I have about Device42 is that if you could create a video, that would be perfect for me.

I gave Device42 a rating of 9 out of 10.

Granular asset tracking has transformed visibility and now supports detailed dependency mapping

  • January 16, 2026
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

My main use cases for Device42 are the asset management package and the CMDB package. A specific example of how I use Device42 for asset management and CMDB is that for the CMDB and asset management parts, it was used for a customer environment in a commercial bank to help them have a detailed inventory of all their assets, including PCs, CCTVs, and more. With the CMDB package, they were able to have the same inventory of all their assets while also showing their interdependency and how they are all connected within the customer's network, also in a commercial bank. It was very helpful.

What is most valuable?

Device42 offers excellent features that include application dependency mapping and asset management where you can see your physical devices, PCs, storage, network devices, and more. Device42 as a whole has all top-notch features, and there is no feature that is not useful. With Device42, you can also integrate with other tools and supported software, so it has great features.

I find myself relying on asset management the most, and what makes asset management stand out is that most enterprise businesses want to have visibility into all their assets and who is being assigned to each asset. There is granular visibility where they can find the IP address. When they have a PC, they can identify which IP address belongs to a specific staff member or employee, and they can get to know the software updates on it, the make, and the access that person has within the environment. It includes not just the features that they can see on the user's device; they can see granularly what needs to be fixed on that device. For an enterprise environment, it gives visibility into all assets and employee activity on those assets.

One other feature that people often overlook is the benefit of asset management. Asset management goes beyond just seeing PCs and extends down granularly to software licenses and the PC's MAC address. With this feature, I can easily assign and reassign devices and know when a device is online or offline. This is especially valuable for virtual solutions, virtual software, and services, as it helps identify what has been captured and what is missing in the inventory, allowing for working towards making it visible by capturing it in the discovery setup.

Device42 has positively impacted our organization by helping us become one of the best companies for asset management and inventory for the enterprise businesses we work with. With Device42, I have been able to work with several commercial banks where they use this solution and they are impressed and happy with the results. They can see down to their storage devices, network devices, storage, and more. They can see everything listed in one click, with the whole inventory displayed, and reports can be generated. It has really helped our business and serves as a good business selling point.

What needs improvement?

Device42 can improve in the area of updates. If automatic updates were available for the solution instead of having customers go through the process of downloading and uploading update packages themselves, it would be beneficial. I would also mention that support response time could be faster.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Device42 for two years.

How are customer service and support?

After a few contacts and communications during setup for customers, they are able to handle it by themselves because it is easy to understand. It is not complex; it is straightforward. When it comes to resolving technical issues, the support team is responsive and always available to help.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Negative

How was the initial setup?

I have noticed measurable outcomes, such as an increase in customers. More enterprise businesses are looking to get Device42 for their asset management. They are moving away from Lansweeper and choosing Device42 instead. They are replacing other asset management solutions with Device42 because it has a broader scope and wider visibility into their environment. Device42 is easy and fast during onboarding, making the implementation efficient.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to others looking into using Device42 is that it is a great solution. All questions and answers when it comes to a CMDB tool, asset management tool, and the visibility you want for your company are provided by Device42. You can discover down to your MacBooks, IP phones, and printers, as everything can be found using Device42. You can also see their interdependencies and manage your licenses and every other aspect. I think Device42 should also expand its focus on working with West Africa, as there is significant opportunity in that region. Device42 should partner with companies to deliver the service and solution to customers in West Africa. I would rate this solution a 9 out of 10.

Unified visibility has transformed hybrid cloud planning but reporting and UI still need work

  • January 06, 2026
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

My typical use case for Device42 would be first, from a CMDB foundations, for the IT teams. Second is focusing on the IP and the asset lifecycle management aspect of it. Third would be helping the teams set up an application dependency mapping in the environment. Another aspect, which is one of the major or most important aspects, would be from a data center documentation standpoint or helping in the data center documentation and also from a hybrid cloud migration planning perspective.

What is most valuable?

Whenever we have customers who are looking to move away from their current on-premise or data center environment to public cloud providers either AWS, Azure or GCP, the first and foremost step which we suggest to our customers is having a footprint of your current environment landscape. This is basically called data center assessment, data center analysis, or current environment analysis. That is where we leverage Device42 to help gather the inventory of the current environment and also plan out the application mapping. With the application mapping or the application dependency, we are able to capture and see what is the app to infra mapping, app to app mapping, which apps are talking to each other and outside of the environment and we are able to build up stacks and do proper cloud migration planning for our end customers.

One of the things is around its automated agentless discovery aspect. We have leveraged it to discover IT assets because Device42 carries out continuous and agentless discovery in the environment. We have leveraged that to discover IT assets such as physical servers, VMs, network devices, containers, storage devices, the applications, cloud resources and their relationships or their dependencies with each other and to the outside. That is one of the places where we have found great benefits from that particular product. It also works across a hybrid environment. We have a lot of customers who are not just on one cloud, either public or private, but they have their workloads spread across different cloud providers. That is one place where it has really helped us. It has also helped us in the CMDB aspect of it, acting as a single source of truth where it has helped us in automatically populating and updating the discovery, supporting relationship visualization, helping us with audits, compliances, and any change management related aspects of it. And around the data center infrastructure management of it, these are some of the areas where it has helped us.

Its depth of automated discovery is one feature. It works really well from an agentless discovery standpoint across very complex environments, both public and private cloud. That is one of the best features. Second is that it provides a unified platform because it really combines the discovery aspect, CMDB aspect, the IT asset management aspect, the IPAM aspects, and so forth. The third part would be the hybrid and the cloud readiness part because it really helps us to visualize the interdependencies and plan for migrations and also helps in operational decisions. Fourth, I can say is the faster deployment and helping to calculate a lower TCO. And with the recent introduction of AI features and functionality, the AI enrichment part really helps us to improve the data quality and give us really good operational insights.

The two features which I remember correctly are the Enrich AI and I believe the Insights AI feature. That has really helped a lot of our customers and even our internal teams when they are executing this product or running this product in the customer's environment from an operational standpoint. The push towards AI-assisted IT operations and data governance has really helped us to showcase this as a differentiator whenever we are speaking to new customers or existing customers. And at the end of the day, it has really helped us to enrich the data and the output which we are providing to the customers.

First, it has really impacted the organization in a positive fashion. Because it acts as a source of truth or a single source of truth for our IT teams. It has helped them in improving planning, even a lot of the aspects when troubleshooting was involved. And also in some important decision making if in case some customer of ours is churning or a customer of ours needs to optimize their environment or they want to have visibility and they want to take more informed decisions while moving from cloud A to cloud B. Second, because it has really provided that comprehensive IT infrastructure discovery and management aspect of it, it has really helped us give full visibility into a hybrid and a multi-cloud environment because we support a lot of the end customers and we manage a lot of different customers and different types of environments. So it has really helped us to give a very detailed and full visibility into not just our own environment, but also our end customers who we are managing. And one thing for sure, Device42 stands out as a really competitive tool as compared to some of the other tools which are out there in the market, such as BMC Discovery, Freshservice, and ServiceNow. So it has been really good and I am really happy to see that Device42 is really doing well in capturing and including the AI aspect of it.

What needs improvement?

From a feature functionality standpoint, I feel the AI data enrichment aspect of it could improve. There is definitely an improvement required at that standpoint. From an ITSM and ticketing perspective, I would say if there were integrations available, that would have really been better because a lot of times what we end up seeing or leveraging is ServiceNow because they have that native or out of the box capability, and even Freshservice has that capability out of the box. I would love to see the ITSM and ticketing aspect of it. Because at the end of the day, we would want a seamless experience for our customers.

I feel the application dependency mapping could be improved. It could definitely improve with maybe a more detailed map whenever we are building up the application stacks. And a little bit of customization can be improved over there. Then I can say from a documentation and reporting standpoint, at present, it is useful, but I feel that it can be improved because it currently feels incomplete in certain areas. There are a few reporting nuances which I see that can be a little confusing for new users without the proper explanation. And then the custom discovery configurations is also something which can be improved in the UI as well.

From a performance standpoint, in cases in which there are very large data sets, I feel they face some slow performances when they are handling large data sets. And there are certain hardware types which are not auto-discovered without the right set of building a custom integration. So I feel these two aspects could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Device42 probably from around 2017 or 2018 across different organizations. So I have been using it for about eight years now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Device42 has been pretty stable, and that was the similar feedback which we received from our customers as well and even the operations team who are out there in the field and actually carrying out deployments and using the products on a daily basis.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is good and with the increase in the size of the environment, it has definitely grown and changed over the last couple of years.

How are customer service and support?

Customer support has been good. We have received timely support in case of any issues. Our internal teams have also leveraged the platform which is available for the customers and the partners to onboard them, have a bit of training on the tool and then ask any specific questions to either the TAM or the customer support team. So the overall experience has really been good.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I was evaluating different solutions out there, and because we are a managed services provider, we are not tied down to one solution. We have used different solutions from ServiceNow CMDB or discovery to BMC Discovery as well, depending upon specific use cases.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was a very strong plus. The automated agentless discovery part is really good. The setup is really quick. The learning curve is good for new people who are jumping onto the platform. So that is really a positive. We have always seen accurate inventory analysis across hybrid cloud environments.

What was our ROI?

There is definitely a good return on investments because, as I mentioned, it has helped accelerate the process in a lot of different areas. The time to resolution, even from a troubleshooting or a discovery standpoint, has highly shortened. Fewer employees are needed. With its capability, we require less people on new projects when we are leveraging this platform. So definitely there is a little bit of time saved and money saved as well. I would not be able to share any rough estimates, but from a percentage standpoint, I can confidently say at least 30% is the savings which we have seen.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I felt the pricing was a little bit mid-range as compared to the other tools which are out there in the market. For example, I felt the BMC Discovery pricing was quite high. So I think the pricing can definitely be improved.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing Device42, we did evaluate different options. As I mentioned, BMC Discovery, ServiceNow CMDB or the discovery module. There was another one which was called Virima. It is really good in the ML-powered aspect of it, and it also ticks a lot of boxes which Device42 also does.

What other advice do I have?

One of the advices is to understand the need for a product like Device42 and build up your use cases first. As I mentioned earlier, Device42 is really valuable if you are using it for hybrid cloud migration and planning exercises, data center documentation, or if you are carrying out rationalizing of the data center, as a CMDB foundation tool for your internal IT teams, in terms of building up application dependency mapping in the environment. So I would suggest drilling down your use cases, figuring out the use cases which you are looking for, and if Device42 is checking all of those boxes, even in terms of use cases or features and functionality, then definitely go ahead with that.

The experience was decent from a licensing standpoint and scaling up and down was definitely convenient. Ours was more of a custom-based model, so there had to be a couple of discussions, but I would say overall the experience was positive from a licensing standpoint because there was a subscription-based model available.

It is spread across all three different cloud providers which are industry leaders.

From a user interface standpoint, I think it is not the most modern as compared to the newer SaaS tools which are out there. So that is another area where there is definitely a need for improvement.

It was earlier leveraged or purchased as part of the AWS marketplace, but from a deployment standpoint, we did have certain customers where it was deployed on-premise. So if I would have to sum up the overall deployment, I can say that it is a mix of public and private, hence a hybrid cloud. The overall review rating I would give is seven out of ten.

Granular discovery has ensured confident workload migration and optimized cloud move group planning

  • December 09, 2025
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

I primarily use Device42 for migration opportunities where workloads have been running in the on-premise data center. Before migration, I need to ensure that I discover everything running in the on-premise data center. I started using it as an assessment tool to explore workload discovery of on-premise data centers, virtual machines, and resources.

One specific project where Device42 helped with workload discovery and assessment was when I was using other assessment tools. In one workload assessment opportunity, the customer was explicitly looking for application-level assessment, which could not be met by other third-party tools at the time. I was really impressed by the workload discovery of applications discovered by Device42. I started using it for application discovery, including the infrastructure discovery of the complete workload.

I started using Device42 because I needed a robust migration plan to ensure that I was not left with any dependency during assessment, since assessment plays a vital role in determining the number of move groups required. During move group planning, I cannot leave any system that is critically dependent on another system in the on-premise environment during migration. To be cautious of workload discovery, Device42 provides more granularity toward ensuring that the number of systems parked in the move group are safe to migrate without leaving any dependency.

What is most valuable?

Device42 offers the best features for workload assessment, particularly useful for cloud-to-cloud workload or on-premise data center workload, especially when planning for workload migration to the public cloud.

For application and infrastructure discovery, Device42 has enabled me to know the number of machines running in the on-premise environment and has managed to capture complete utilization metrics or trends of their utilization. This has benefited me in right-sizing systems for my public cloud total cost of ownership (TCO) planning, providing me granularity to right-size these systems while planning a migration to the public cloud.

Device42 has positively impacted my organization by providing granularity toward application discovery compared to other assessment tools, which is a differentiator since none of the other tools provide such granularity, leading to better decision-making for my migration to the public cloud.

Device42 has improved my migration projects by providing granularity around system dependencies that gave me confidence knowing which systems communicate with each other parked in a particular move group. My move group planning became so robust that I am not leaving any system behind in the on-premise data center from my planning, which saves a lot of time and effort, leading to cost optimization—a value addition.

What needs improvement?

The features I appreciate most about Device42 are the agent-based service providing more granularity and metrics. However, I foresee areas of improvement for the agent-less solution, which could be very useful for those organizations that might not allow configuring an agent in their source machines for workload discovery.

I think the graphical representation of all associated machines needs improvement to better illustrate how these systems have dependencies on each other. The network graph representation can be matured, which I find useful.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Device42 for four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Device42 is stable and has been reliable for my organization. I find myself more confident using Device42 because I have been well-versed with this tool for a couple of years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Device42 handles my organization's growth and changing needs well. Although it has some dependency on the number of agents, if you understand all the prerequisites shared by Device42, it is very much scalable and allows you to design your discovery solution without facing any challenge.

How are customer service and support?

Customer support for Device42 is fantastic. They have quick SLA responses and provide support through call, email, and chat, effectively assisting me with any agent configuration or troubleshooting issues.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Negative

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Prior to Device42, I was using Cloudamize and Migration Evaluator. Before choosing Device42, I evaluated AWS native Migration Evaluator.

What was our ROI?

As part of workload assessment, Device42 has enabled me to meet the required TCO calculation, helping to generate ROI while doing a workload assessment with TCO of five years and three years. It has facilitated bringing in the right-sized systems for the public cloud environment, ensuring these systems are rightly sized based on metrics and inventory captured for on-premise systems. The TCO calculations based on five years and three years have yielded a remarkable ROI compared to on-premise workload, validating the business case submission to the customer.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing for Device42 is that it is really reasonable. Compared to other competitors, it does not cost much, and I would recommend it from a cost perspective.

What other advice do I have?

For anyone looking into using Device42 for workload discovery of their on-premise data center resources and planning to move to the public cloud, I recommend Device42 because of the level of granularity it generates, which instills more confidence during migration.

Device42 is a fantastic tool for workload discovery, and I believe everyone should start using it if they have plans to do so; it is a top-notch tool in the market. I gave this review a rating of 10 out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Public Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Powerful discovery and ADM solution and outstanding support

  • June 14, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Overall we're ery happy to be a Device42 customer, they're very customer oriented and working together with them happens always on a partnerhsip level and in a very kind way.

Their support is really outstanding, of course during the implementation there were challenges and areas for improvements, but they picked them up and made sure they get solved. This was not just limited to the beginning, they really try to make sure we're continously a satisfied customer.
In case we run into questions or issues we can always rely that the support is picking it up very open minded and tries to help us to get it solved, without questioning immediately whether we can proof that the root cause isn't in our environment but in Device42, that's great team work.

They're also very good in continuoulsy developing the product further, release new features and strive to make it better and better. The solution is very user friendly designed, but also very powerfull with all it's discovery features.

At the beginning I was a bit missing a standardized training approach, like web based trainings to have an easier entry to some topics, as it might be a bit overwhelming studying the documentation or always engaging a Customer Success Engineer, but recently they also started their Academy which contained from the begining a good set of trainings and also a certification apporach. Also here the content is constantly growing and improving.

When we were looking for a discovery solutions with Application Dependency Mapping feature, Device42 made a big difference to their competitors during our evaluation from a functional perspective and also with their support concept and they proofed it until today that we went for the right solution.
What do you dislike about the product?
I can't really say there is somehitng I dislike.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Device42 is designed in a way to cover everything you need, to discover your environment entirely and get great visibility to everything. Previously we struggled that we have ONE solution to discover all kind of servers properly, be able to do Application Dependency Mapping and also be able to dicover typical data center infrastructure devices and their relations in an easy and professional way, Device42 definitely solved this challenge. Furthermore they also do there best to get most out of the data in an automatic way and show what we have in our environment (e.g. overview about subnets, vendors, models, software).

Easy to use and good support team

  • April 23, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Device 42 is a tool easy to use, but also easy to manage and maintain. Easy to run updates, deploy settings etc ...
Year after year, we receive valuable new features and the product increasingly meets business needs.
Every time we have support request, we have someone engage to close the case.
On top of that, with API provided by D42, we do many integration with our internal tools, it is very help full for us.
What do you dislike about the product?
We run D42 for years, there is nothing we dislike, but if we can have an external database to offload VM load when we have high volume of requests.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Datacenter are most of the time hosted outside of the company. Having a sharp idea of how our datacenters or server rooms are is very important to be able to take good decision and be able to run remote support with physical devices.
Also audit period is very stressfull, now with D42, we have scheduled reports and it is easy to show to auditors what they need.

Enables users to manage assets and supports compliance and audit processes

  • March 25, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution for physical assets management, IT management, and application dependency mapping.

How has it helped my organization?

There was a lack of information about what was installed in the data center and how they interconnect with each other. We had the information in Excel before. We installed Device42 to get the information from our environment into the Device42 database.

The solution supports our compliance and audit processes. We take a lot of advantage of it. We use the reporting to audit institutions. We can send the queries and get the reports directly from the tool. I rate the process an eight out of ten. I would have rated it ten if the product had AI features.

What is most valuable?

The solution is agentless. Application dependency mapping is a valuable feature. These are the two reasons why I believe the product is very beneficial. Before, we had servers. Every time we made some changes to the service, there was a gap between what was expected from the server and what the server was doing.

Network visualization is a basic function. The information is gathered using SNMP. It's not different from others that I've known before. A main aspect of network discovery is that we use it to manage the IP addresses. We use that feature because it is part of the core module.

What needs improvement?

The product must provide AI features. It would be very useful if I could create datasets or queries from an AI interface.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the tool’s stability a ten out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The tool’s scalability is very nice. We must speak to the vendor, and they will send a new key code. We can install it and start working. It's easy to scale the product.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support team is very responsive. Everything has an answer. If something can’t be done, it is because the product doesn’t do it.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We were using another tool. We wanted to integrate an asset management solution with it, but we couldn’t do it because we had to manually set the relationship between all the assets. It was time-consuming. So, we switched to Device42.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is very easy. I rate the ease of setup a nine out of ten. It would be very easy to set up if we knew how things work.

What other advice do I have?

I will recommend the tool to others. Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.
