We had a requirement to store our database and virtual machine backups in the cloud instead of having local backups. To fulfill that requirement, we use a Metallic solution. The reason that we are moving to Commvault Metallic is that, at that moment, we are using a Commvault backup solution. While using the Commvault backup solution we got positive feedback. So, we didn't hesitate to move to their own cloud solution, Metallic. While using this product, we've also received the same positive feedback.

Metallic Backup Experience
Reduces traffic, has good deduplication and is easy to set up
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
We had a backup solution. We were trying to find a better backup solution than the old one. We were searching for backup solutions based on the below criteria:
- Backup-taking method
- Backup retention and the ability to change retention
- WORM feature availability
- Security tools
- 24/7 Availability
- Portability of Backup and VM
- Deduplication ratios
- Encryption mechanism
While we were looking out at the market, we found this solution perfectly matched so we decided to try it.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature is the deduplication ratio. It saves most of our space and reduces the network traffic. Space is a very important factor. Thanks to this deduplication ratio, we are able to maintain our backup retention time for a variety of reasons. It also reduces network traffic and saves us from network-related issues. When the backup gets smaller, we can easily transfer between locations very quickly and accurately. It provides good cost savings as well.
What needs improvement?
We are using a production environment with customer-sensitive data on it. As per our central bank rules and regulations, we can't keep our customer's sensitive data in the cloud. So we are looking forward to having a good solution that can work with us. The Metallic team is working on this and will come up with a better solution in the future. If we can figure out this issue, we won't have future issues relating to our government authorities, and we can also fulfill our company's requirements easily.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using this product for the last year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
It is maintaining our backup without failing.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is very good.
How are customer service and support?
The support team wants to improve its SLA.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We did use a different solution; this is the better solution for us.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is straightforward.
What about the implementation team?
We implemented with a vendor team and I would rate their services eight out of ten.
What was our ROI?
We have noticed an ROI related to good space and network utilization savings.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
In this product, the cost-benefit is very high.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We also evaluated EMC NetWorker, Veeam, et cetera.
What other advice do I have?
This is one of the best solutions I've come across.
I'm working with this product since last year
A simple and easy-to-deploy solution that provides excellent backup and recovery features and a helpful support team
What is our primary use case?
The product is used purely for backup and restoration of data. A company can use the product if it needs to keep the sensitive data in its disk and cloud safe.
What is most valuable?
The 1-Touch recovery feature is helpful for all customers. If anything happens in the environment and a server shuts down, we can bring it back using the 1-Touch recovery feature. Commvault Backup & Recovery is simple compared to other products.
What needs improvement?
The stability of the tool could be improved. We were not able to take a secondary copy in Metallic on-premise. Some pharmaceutical customers keep their data on-premise so that they can maintain a copy on-premise if something happens to the cloud. Metallic does not provide an option to save a copy of data on-premises.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for four years. I am using the latest version of the solution.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate the stability an eight and a half or nine out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is scalable. We are providing services for 30 to 45 customers in our organization.
How are customer service and support?
The support team is good. Whenever we raise tickets, the support team is available 24/7.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is straightforward. As a beginner, I learned the entire deployment process in an hour. The entire configuration takes three to four hours to complete. The download takes 30 minutes. The installation is purely based on the network strength. If everything is good and we download the right package, the console can be deployed in three to four hours.
What about the implementation team?
We need to download Media Kit from the console to deploy the solution. Then, we must extract it and download the entire software package. After that, we run a set of files from the downloaded package.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is expensive, but it is worth the money. When we choose a good quality product, we must pay for it. We should not expect a good quality product at a lower price.
What other advice do I have?
I have used versions 11.28 to 11.30. I have four years of experience in technical support. We should not think that the solution is expensive. It is worth the money. It is a worthy product. Overall, I rate the product a nine out of ten.
Enables users to store unlimited data on the cloud
What is our primary use case?
Customers who can’t afford storage on their on-premise servers can easily use the product to move to the cloud.
What is most valuable?
I like the Metallic Endpoint feature. Whoever has an Endpoint license can store unlimited data on the cloud. Commvault provides unlimited restoration for free. Other products have a limit on restoration. When we cross the limit, we must pay for restoration.
What needs improvement?
The product does not provide an option to save a copy of data on-premises.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the solution for three to five months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate the tool’s stability a nine out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The solution is scalable. We have three to five customers using the tool.
How are customer service and support?
Whenever we raise a ticket, the support personnel connects with us at the exact time that they committed to. I can rate the support team a ten out of ten without a doubt.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The on-premise solution is a lengthy one to configure. We can deploy the solution in three to four clicks, though. The product is purely cloud-based.
What about the implementation team?
To deploy the tool, we must authenticate our email ID on Commvault. Then, we will get a link from which we need to generate a username and password. Once we enter that username and password, we'll get a region of the cloud where we need to configure the storage tool.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The solution is worth the money. Depending on the customer’s feasibility, they pay for the license every year or every three years. The evaluation is given for 30 to 90 days, which has to be paid.
What other advice do I have?
A sales manager, a technical manager, a COO, one of my colleagues, and I handle Commvault in our company. Overall, I rate the tool a nine out of ten.
Best Tool for managing our data
Great Reliable Mail Backup Solution
It has been a pleasure working with Commvault
A stable solution for Red Hat Linux
What is our primary use case?
Commvault is an enterprise-level backup solution that can use multiple agents at various sites. We have many customers, including banks and hospitals.
What is most valuable?
Commvault is a stable solution for Red Hat Linux.
What needs improvement?
It takes a lot of steps to implement backups. We have to do a lot of planning to make the solution work properly. It takes some time to create every policy. It's an easy task, but there are many steps. It's not as easy as using Veeam.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have used Commvault for nine months as a supporting engineer.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate Commvault eight out of 10 for stability.
How was the initial setup?
Setting up Commvault is complex and it involves many steps. After you configure the storage, you need to set your client's policies and add a proxy server if necessary.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I prefer selling Commvault to enterprises. It's appropriate for a company that has a headquarters plus four or five offices. It isn't ideal for a small business. The price is okay if you have the budget of a large enterprise. Aside from the license, the only additional cost is cloud fees if you are using cloud infrastructure.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Commvault Backup and Recovery 10 out of 10. I would recommend Commvault if a company has huge backup needs and a sufficient budget. If the price isn't an issue, you shouldn't compromise.
Offers unlimited backup
What is our primary use case?
We have used Metallic to offer a package of services to some of our clients along with Nutanix. One of our clients just started using it for Mac agents. They purchased approximately 35 licenses.
What is most valuable?
One valuable feature is unlimited backup. You can back up existing users and folders.
What needs improvement?
You can't change Metallic's retention policies without contacting the Commvault support team. We can only change the scheduling within a certain window, like four hours. Restoration also takes a long time. The hypervisor capabilities are also limited in terms of backing up across cloud platforms. For example, if we are taking a backup in Azure and want to switch the backup to AWS, it will take some time.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have worked with Metallic for about a year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I rate Metallic seven out of 10 for stability. The backup and restoration takes some time, and you get some errors when installing a package.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Metallic is a scalable solution. Its primary benefit is unlimited backup for endpoint users. However, not all clients purchase that.
How was the initial setup?
Deploying Metallic isn't complex. You only need to install the onboarding agent. It took approximately half an hour the first time. You have to download the agent package from the console itself and deploy it on the endpoint. You need to put in the login credentials. It will ask for the email ID and password.
What other advice do I have?
I rate Metallic eight out of 10. I recommend using the console instead of the web interface. It's much easier to use.
