Need an operating system user friendly but free, solid and open?

  • September 22, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
it's free but there's an intelligent support by Canonical. It's the linux distribution that really achieved making it really user-friendly. it's about 10 years I use it and I had no problems or crash I couldn't recover. it's really solid and have great support by all linux community. Ubuntu users has so grown that third-party software often release builds for ubuntu aside windows and mac ones.
I use Ubuntu on a daily basis and I think I would never turn back!
What do you dislike about the product?
As it's linux, some hardware features have no or little software support by vendors. Sometimes You have to dig into community forums or blogs to find how to do some very basic tasks that windows (or mac) do in a more friendly manner. Unfortunately, most of those instructions and explanation are so technical that I even don't understand. Cannot realize what would mean this for a normal user...
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Using Ubuntu allows me to be more productive on my own job because I can install
many software that are a valid open source alternative to expensive proprietary products.
Also, as it is Linux, I know exactly what system is doing. In case of problems there's often a very technical user or programmer that was in the same situation and in some way found a solution.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
One fundamental recommendation is not to change desktop environment. Even it is possible (many users successfully have done tha, e.g. installing KDE) I know that it makes harder upgrading ubuntu. Specially with major release. So, keep using desktop environment shipped with Ubuntu (Gnome), and you'll reduce incompatibility issues.

Ubuntu allows me to run all the applications I need

  • September 18, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I think the fact that Ubuntu is open source is something I really like about it. It not only saves software costs dramatically, but it can also handle running most of the business software I use such as word processing applications, spreadsheet editors and web-based collaboration tools. I can get on the internet very smoothly by connecting to wifi networks as I would on a Windows or Mac computer.
What do you dislike about the product?
There aren't as many software selections compared to more popular operating systems like Windows and Mac. The user interface takes some time to get used to, especially for users that are accustomed to other operating systems.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I can use Ubuntu to run all the applications I need for work and also browse the internet and visit all the websites I need to for conducting business. Using an open source operating system helps me to reduce costs on software. I can get all the latest updates without having to constantly pay fees. I have also had fewer malware infections compared to when I used Windows.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you don't have to download and install software that is particular to operating systems like Windows and Mac, Ubuntu might be a good operating system that can save you money and run smoothly.

Ubuntu

What do you like best about the product?
The best thing i like in Ubuntu is it free and most of the applications that it run also free , Ubuntu is easily customizable unlike other Linux distros where you need to do a lot of configurations , it is more secure , you can even run Ubuntu from a live USB with out installing that one of the coolest feature where you can carry your operating system on a pen drive and can connect to your workstation anytime , and it is better suited for development purpose because Ubuntu offers a lot of open source applications/tools that are required to develop a project. Also Ubuntu terminal is the best because it comes with preinstalled and default support with bash and many other commands that are supported on servers, local files etc., and Ubuntu is a Hardware friendly it can run on older hardware with easy unlike in other operating systems except Linux Distro. Now Ubuntu comes with GNOME 3 Desktop environment looks cool than before. And finally the forum that is available for Ubuntu is simply awesome where you can find solutions for almost every problem that you have encountered with Ubuntu.
What do you dislike about the product?
Ubuntu is a powerful and improved user experience but it still carry lags sometimes. also Ubuntu doesn't support modern games shows poor graphic quality. With my experience Ubuntu doesn't support NVIDIA G force Graphic drivers in a dual booted laptop .also Ubuntu doesn't comes per-installed in modern laptops user needs to install it. Also driver support for Ubuntu is less compared to other operating systems.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mostly i use Ubuntu to get experience in Linux commands and its environment . I use Apache Hadoop (HDFS) to process big data computations on Ubuntu and with ubuntu library support Map reduce programs can be execute easily .
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are looking for an Linux distro that is secured ,more available packages and want to develop something then you should try Ubuntu .

ubuntu

What do you like best about the product?
I have tried Ubuntu at home, and in my work the answer is always reliable. It is clear that users need to learn as the experience becomes better and better when exploring alternatives. However, there is no need to be overly aware of its use, there will always be a critical software cleaner, but it is easily overlooked due to the variety of capabilities offered by the distribution.
What do you dislike about the product?
You need to have a good understanding of how to find file systems and content - this is the biggest obstacle I have included.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Local integrated app menus, utility launches and minimizing, it has never been easier to unlock, and VMware works great with improved graphics and speed. Very easy to use and install. It's highly customizable and it's free. Most people around use it and know it, finding technical support and sharing documents, apps with others is easy. Linux Ubuntu has a lot of viruses. Every six months or so, with kernel modules and enhancements, Linux hardware support is up to date. Never before has it been so good. My gaming experience has changed forever.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I recommend including Ubuntu in the developing world because it is more powerful and secure than Windows. It has many features that make your work easier and easier

The very best operating system for startups and free users.

  • September 17, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
This is a very easy operating system that any user who knows the basics of installing an OS can install. It has great features like an app store, so users don't need to learn to use the terminal.
What do you dislike about the product?
Just more GUI and allow all Windows apps to install directly without any VINE type apps.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Free open office software cannot be used like Microsoft Office, so it would be great if it allowed direct installation as well. However, it's understandable since it's open source, we need to help improve it.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Improve Design and provide timely updates, and allow all Windows software to be installed without any third-party packages.

Good Linux Based OS and Server

  • September 17, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I am using Centos now for a lamp stack. There are some configurations I could not initiate with Ubuntu that is why I switched with Centos.

I used Ubuntu before mostly not as a workstation but as a server. It is quite good but there are some configurations I could not sort out with my reconfigured lamp stack and another server using nginx as a reverse proxy.

When I use Ubuntu as a workstation, it is excellent. Most of the available repositories are okay and not much of a hiccup unlike other Linux based OS specific for workstations.
What do you dislike about the product?
Ubuntu is not good for server side task. It is more good as a workstation.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu is free. It is good for a person who has more work related things using Linux.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is heavy compared to other Linux based OS.
