Best OS for professional development.

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The first thing about this OS is that it is Open-sourced, that means we do not require to purchase it. The community support for Linux/Ubuntu is enormous and for software development, it is the best OS. The best thing is that most of the tools that are developed nowadays in the market are first made compitable to use with Linux/Ubuntu. The Command-Line Interface provided with ubuntu is great and also it is much more secure as compared to few other OS available out there in the market.
What do you dislike about the product?
Although the best part about using ubuntu is that is has a wide community of developers using it, The people on a daily basis do not use ubuntu as much as Windows. Compared to windows, it provides fewer GUI features. For Non-IT people, it is still cumbersome to use it on a daily basis.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use ubuntu OS on a daily basis. It is easy to do development on this and it starts up in no time and I can install software on this very quickly. It consumes less memory and we can track easily as to how much each software is consuming and can stop that software. The biggest advantage is that it is open source and free to use and modify as one needs.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are a developer, I would recommend you to go for it without any doubt. But if you are a non-IT person and want to use it on a daily basis, I would recommend considering other options.

What do you like best about the product?
Performance, reliability and constant security updates are some of the best features. Using it on servers and desktops makes it awesome and makes production and development environment as close as possible. Available software selection make it a lot easier to use and integrate.
What do you dislike about the product?
As its majorly different from most of the people's choice of OS, it's really difficult to get people to get started on the platform.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use ubuntu on all our server to host our and client applications.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Using your servers is awesome, using it on the desktop is also good, but there are not lot of choices of first-party devices that run Ubuntu or ubuntu approved hardware.

Widely Adopted and a Great Support Community

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Canonical takes a rather opinionated stance with its official Ubuntu flavor, regarding software. Because of this, minimal effort is required on the part of a user to get a usable system up and running. This in now way limits further customization.
What do you dislike about the product?
While the official apt repositories are mostly well maintained, there are instances where we are still building packages by hand in order to run recent versions.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Picking Ubuntu as a distro to build and test on allows us to cover a very large proportion of end-users running on Linux.
