Heap's of reasons to buy! Some small areas to improve over time.

  • November 17, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Heap makes my life a lot easier. I am being asked a ton more questions by our leadership team, and I am able to find the answer in heap immediately or define it within minutes. I love that even when I don't have an event set up, it has all of the past data without having to have the event defined preventively. Heap has a lot of great features that they are always updating and improving.

Data governance is really important for our company and Heap makes it very easy to ensure that events are created with a standard naming convention. They even have a way for other users within Heap to verify that the events are correct, and everyone can trust that they can use it.
What do you dislike about the product?
It can be hard to define so many events (initial setup). I wish there were some quick ways to define all events within a dropdown. As an example, a 'Sort' dropdown with 12 options, I wish I could click Define Sort, and then have it define the 12 separate events within it.

I also wish that the reporting capability was a bit beefier. For example stacked bar charts, area charts, bubble charts, scatter, gauges, etc.

We often have to pull a lot of data into redshift, and then do custom visualizations there. The same goes with if there are limitations on how we can bucket or structure the data in the reporting view on Heap.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
A lot of conversion funnels. Understanding where our key conversions are for sign up. We look at how long it takes users to complete each step of our process. We also look at new feature usage and feature retention.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Get is sooner than later, the second you install it, it begins capturing all of the data on your website and stores it for easy reporting in the future.

Great analytics, detailed behavior analysis & A/B test interrogation

  • November 17, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Having Heap alongside other metrics has allowed us to double check reporting from other AB testing results, verify behavioral data which we omitted from our own database records, Google analytics reporting, or other data collection tools. It has allowed us to drill down into the various components of why an A/b test had a certain SKU and it had allowed us to find bugs where we would never have otherwise been able to spot the changes in various funnels for certain users and certain behaviors.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only caveat that I have found is that sometimes the numbers reported by Heap are quite different from the other verifiable sources for the same data. For example when we record a certain metric in an A/b testing tool and the same metric in our database it is interesting to see starkly different results in heat sometimes. I believe this is due to the way in which the bras attracts certain things and certain people using ad blockers but it makes me trust the integrity of the data a little less whenever I see these sorts of disparities.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are mostly using heap to perform a more detailed analysis of how it user's website behavior that we cannot achieve elsewhere due to the lack of granular logging of actions and attributes.
We have also used it to generate daily reports to alert us to changes in expected behavior, for example the number of times a customer visits a page where the expected state of the page is not one that we expect. This has saved us having to write code and login to achieve the same result.

Heap has changed the way we do business

  • November 17, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Heap requires minimal engineering effort to install and support. It's easy for less technical folks to define events that you want to report on.

Even better, it collects data retroactively. You don't have to know ahead of time which UI elements you want to collect data on and it doesn't hit you over the head trying to present reports and dashboards on tons of data it *thinks* you might need.

Instead, Heap constantly collects data on user interactions and stories it for you for when you do need it. Then, when you realize that you want something like, "how many people clicked to export this file in the past 6 months" – you can easily create reports on that item. And you can create fairly complex queries with its user-friendly interface.

In the past we had limited data from GA and internal logging. This required us either to get by with very top level numbers like pageviews, or invest scarce engineering resources into developing, deploying, and maintaining custom events. Because of this we weren't very data driven, relying too much on qualitative data and–worse–gut feel. Now we know exactly what our users are doing, including which users are doing what from which customer. Heap also gives us the tools now to monitor product adoption in a way we never had.
What do you dislike about the product?
For some users, Heap can seem a bit like a blank slate. It does now have some suggested paths you can take to create reports, but depending on your product and reporting needs, these may or may not be very relevant. Some of my more queries can take a long time to run (but, these are admittedly complex, in part due to implementation choices we made that are probably not optimum).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Heap is helping better understand product adoption and monitor for signs of customer churn. It also helps us understand user behavior, which guides new product development, iterative enhancements, and in replatforming initiatives.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Have a good understanding of the goal you have that you're hoping to meet with an analytics tool and what kinds of questions do you have about your users. This is crucial to knowing whether and what kind of analytics tool is right for you.

Heap is a fantastic analytics tool for mobile applications

  • November 17, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Heap requires very little engineering effort to implement and get started, is easily customizable, and is very receptive of new feature ideas from their customers.
What do you dislike about the product?
Autocapture does not always work as promised.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Gaining deeper insights from mobile application users.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Much more effective than tools like Mixpanel that require tons of engineering effort to set up.

Great for collecting data you didn't plan on collecting at first!

  • November 17, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I can look at past historical data that I didn't explicitly plant to track. It tracks every click, scroll, and so on, and I can target these events after the fact.
What do you dislike about the product?
A little complicated at times. It would be beneficial to be able to see tables of events and properties instead of just in popups.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mainly what paths the users take. I'm able to create funnels and see where people drop off and the conversion rate between two events.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Super quick setup - vital especially for companies just getting started to get critical user information

What do you like best about the product?
it records everything in advance so as you become more advanced you don't have to start at zero.
What do you dislike about the product?
we use a single page angular app which makes it more complicated to extract what we need.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
booking funnel frictions. we can see how people go back in the funnel and try to solve for that. it helps inform where we assign our resources.

Helpful to understand user behavior

  • November 16, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Being able to create funnels and graph comparisons in different user experiences. Being able to sort by user personas and different entry points. I also really like the ability to create new events (the new events builder) which is a good way to understand what attributes we need to build out in the code in order to better track metrics appropriately.
What do you dislike about the product?
Organizing different dashboards - wish you could copy the same graph into multiple dashboards. I think it would also help to have more tutorials embedded for different analytics features so that I can learn what the product can offer me. It wasn't until I did a formal training that I was able to understand the power of the product.

Also I think that the preview for events could be a little better - sometimes I'm unsure how to know for certain which event I'm referencing. Perhaps the ability to upload or visualize a screenshot of that event location to just double confirm that it's exactly the event I want to be monitoring.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Being able to understand where our users run into issues. Understanding drop off and general behavior. Being able to segment based on pre-defined data about our users (i.e. if they work for the company or not). Trying to comprehend where we should put our focus for future product development. This way we can have higher level learning that we can reference in our product decision making.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Definitely do an organization wide training to understand the power of the product. This is useful if you want high level insights into the ways your users interact with your software.

Great tool to review conversion rate insights

  • November 16, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The ability for streamlined reports and dashboards, no more digging through analytics and unreliable 'events'. I'm able to pull reports and charts into presentations that help add context to a marketing campaign and help frame the user journey.
What do you dislike about the product?
Extensive amount of time to train & onboard to effectively use Heap. No available resources for use cases specific to b2b
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Conversion rate optimization, the ability to generate reports and graphs quickly, able to make quick decisions based on insights
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Heap is worth the investment as it provides clarity on the user experience on your website, helps you understand gaps and weaknesses to optimize accordingly.

Great when you don't know what you don't know

  • November 16, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Heap is our first foray into usage monitoring and it has helped with building a proper set of metrics that allow us to make data-driven decisions for our product.

We're a B2B company and have a cloud based SaaS platform that the staff of our clients are required to use at work. But for the majority of the users it's not as a tool to help them do their day job, its to give them a portal to report/submit things. So we want them to be able to get in, do what they need to do, and get out as quickly as possible. This means that a lot of information and best practice out there on what you should be measuring is irrelevant. So it wasn't really viable for us to use a tool that you had to first define the events you want to track. We didn't yet know what we didn't know about usage of our platform. The joy of Heap is that you connect it up and it starts logging everything straight away. Once we have decided a question we want to ask the data, we define the events or properties and there's already loads of data there to look at as Heap allows you to analyse events retrospectively.
What do you dislike about the product?
A lot of the default reports and definitions are targeted at B2C and often relate to marketing. It feels like it's only in recent times they've really started looking at B2B. To use the majority of their recommended reports for Enterprise SaaS you need to connect other data sources to have enough info to answer useful questions. However, for a small company starting it's data management journey those tools are not in the budget. We don't have a stack. So there's a gap there in what they offer, in terms of guidance more than features, that could help users get greater value out of the platform.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're no longer relying on anecdotal evidence from our Customer Success team on what our users are doing, and how they use it. The CS team primarily interact with the superusers, the people whose day job is to use it. They're super important as they are often key influencers for churn and renewal. However, the largest cohort of users are those who only need to use the platform infrequently and, prior to getting Heap, we had no visibility on how they were using it. Improving the efficiency of those users is actually a key driver of success for us.

Great for diving into user actions (especially for non-engineers)

  • November 16, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Heap makes it really easy to get quantitative analyses into how customers use your product and where they are dropping off. Using Heap's Event Visualizer, you can check usage of button clicks/actions for every element on your site which is super helpful and enables anyone on your team to analyze user data without necessarily needing to wait for a Data Scientist to run an analysis for them.
What do you dislike about the product?
I wish there were faster ways to run analyses in Heap of integrated actions. To really get into the analysis process, you need to define events for every single action and categorize them before you can start them in analyses. As a result, the learning curve for Heap is high outside tech savvy employees willing to invest the requisite time to learn and use the software.

Event Visualizer is also a great tool but I often run into issues with it working because of AdBlocker or trying to test outside of Chrome.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Heap to identify specific user cohorts based on actions they're taking to contact for user interviews. In addition, I often use Heap to dive into understanding where users are dropping off in product experiences to understand where we can iterate to further improve the user experience.
