the default login credentials do not work rendering this useless. if i cant login to opnsense this image is useless

Did you use the `password=mypasssword` format as provided in the instructions or viewed the "System Log" for initial passwords for both ec2-user and root? Although the usage instructions do contain all steps needed to login either via ssh and/or the web gui, there's also a full step by step manual available in our documentation (https://docs.opnsense.org/manual/how-tos/installaws.html)
