Best choice if you need advanced routing, VPN, firewall as open source

  • December 07, 2023

What do you like best about the product?
Works great with small applicances, as VM, with great performance. Its ability to have advanced routing, switching, multicast-routig, vpn with ipsec is outstanding. documentation is ok but in many points not complete

Update (20240818) - as I am testing version 1.4.0 I also see that the documentation is getting better and a lot of effort is put into scripts to automatically convert older configurations into compatible ones for the newer version.
What do you dislike about the product?
I missed most the option to use eliptic curves in ipsec connections (rsa suported and with "bad hack" ecdsa is also possible) and that the documentation is not complete and leave a lot of questions open (when you dive into more advanced areas), i also would like to have IPv6 to be able to turn off (all option available do not work), and i do not like that they removed tshark from recent version - it was not perfect as it has display issued when debugging vpn interfaces (would be helpfull if the output would have stated which point in the precess queue the packet displayed is from - e.g. you see non encrypted packages on the tunnel interface - but measuring direct on an external device everything is ok). thats it for now - please do not get the impression there are more bad than good thing - i really love VyOS

Update (20240818) - I am in the evaluation phase of VyOS Version 1.4.0 and I have to say that version is a major step in the right direction. My beloved eliptic curves (ECDSA) are supported out of the box (no patch needed anymore) for public key materials, logging of IPsec is much better, and the new firewall implementation is now able to control any packet flow originating from VyOS (was not true for older versions). My IPv6 problem can be addressed now with the appropriate firewall rules.
I also found an IGMP handling bug in the version 1.3.6, which could be found and fixed with the superb help of the VyOS support. The time to fix was incredible fast compared to traditional support I used in the past for other network software/hardware like Cisco or HPE. I am really thankful for that.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
If you need multicast routing and ipsec tunnels running on affordable hardware and do have budget restrictions this is the product to choose. in my environment is runs rock solid, stable and if you know what and how to do it absolutely smooth to administer.

VyOS: Empowering Network Administrators with Reliable Open-Source Routing Solutions

  • July 19, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
VyOS stands out as a highly versatile routing platform, offering diverse routing protocols and features. This flexibility allows network administrators to construct complex and customized network infrastructures to suit their specific requirements. From static routing to dynamic protocols like OSPF and BGP, VyOS caters to a broad range of routing needs, ensuring dependable and efficient network connectivity.
Another remarkable aspect of VyOS is its commitment to open-source principles.
Furthermore, VyOS provides a robust and user-friendly command-line interface (CLI).
What do you dislike about the product?
A more user-friendly web-based management interface or graphical user interface (GUI) could benefit administrators who prefer a visual approach to network management. Although VyOS primarily focuses on CLI-based management, offering a GUI option would provide an alternative for those who prefer a graphical interface for configuration and monitoring.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
VyOS addresses challenges related to routing versatility, cost-effectiveness, streamlined management, community collaboration, and network configuration options.

What do you like best about the product?
Its easy implementation and the possibilities that the product offers to the different virtual environments that we deploy with Openstack.
What do you dislike about the product?
The non-existence of a friendly management to delegate its administration to clients and sell it as a service.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Extends the capacity of virtual networks between Openstack environments with a product that currently has no competitor in the market.

Solid appliance for terminating IPsec in the cloud

  • October 29, 2019
  • Review verified by AWS Marketplace

My organization uses VyOS appliances to implement a security services VPC for other VPCs in our infrastructure. We've been very pleased with the stability and performance. If you are looking to "roll your own" NAT instance, you may want to consider using VyOS. One major caveat to deployment is a complete lack of documentation for VyOS's cloud-init implementation, which was re-written for 1.2. This a big pain point for us as our infrastructure is codified in terraform. Overall, I would encourage companies with complex VPC networking requirements to evaluate this product.
