In a previous organization at HBL, we were using Cisco Umbrella as well, so it has been a quite long time.

Secure browsing has protected users from DNS threats and improves malware defense
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
Cisco Umbrella is specifically designed for DNS protection, with features including a user-friendly console and the easiest installation. It offers very prominent threat feeding from different Talos sources, securing multiple platforms. Cisco Umbrella helps protect from malware and unsafe sites. It is especially useful in mitigating DNS attacks and ensuring secure browsing for end users.
What needs improvement?
The major issue is that sometimes when you install the client, it shows you protected and displays that it is live with the backend servers and everything. However, in reality, it was not getting any feed from the main client and is just sending your traffic to open DNS, which sometimes causes an issue because the protection you have implemented can be breached by users.
The primary thing that Cisco Umbrella lacked most of the time is their client. Previously, they had a separate Cisco client. Now they have merged everything into the Cisco Secure Endpoint client—one client for everything, for Cisco Endpoint, for Cisco AnyConnect, and for Cisco Umbrella, which they did probably in 2025.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for almost two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
As a customer, I have never been satisfied with any product for a longer period of time, so that is a tricky question to answer.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
If you require 10 clients or however many you need or whatever expansion you require, they are just a click away.
How are customer service and support?
Cisco is always known for their best technical support, so there is no doubt about it.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
At that time I was working in HBL on the Symantec DLP product.
How was the initial setup?
Cisco Umbrella is specifically designed for DNS protection, and the features they have include a user-friendly console and probably the easiest installation.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
If you go with the main competitor product, there is no doubt that Infoblox is the best product.
What other advice do I have?
There are a couple of products we are working on. We use Cisco EDR and XDR, for DLP we have Forcepoint, and for cyber threat intelligence, we have EPP.
We focus on DLP and the classification tool, which is for data visibility and DLP. It is kind of data protection that is used for classification.
For Cisco, we use FTDs. It is the Cisco Secure Endpoint, which is known as Cisco EDR, Endpoint Detection and Response.
We use Cisco Umbrella for DNS protection. In the current environment, cyber security resolves your addresses securely and protects from threats from outside. Most attacks happen over DNS, so those DNS queries can be mitigated if you have a secure way for browsing for your end users.
We are not using Cisco Umbrella for the proxy. We are using it from our DNS perspective. As a strategy, we are using it for outside communication through the DNS resolver. However, Cisco Umbrella has now combined with Secure Access, which comes with different features. Previously, Cisco had WSA for the proxy. Now they have come up with a proxy solution that gives Cisco Umbrella protection with remote proxy and cloud proxy solution, which is known as Secure Access.
As I mentioned earlier, they have very prominent threat feeding from different Talos sources, securing us on multiple platforms where, as an enterprise, you might not have those features and the feed to protect yourself. Cisco Umbrella is definitely a good product from that perspective and is going to help you protect from malware and from sites which are reputedly not marked as safe for the user. I would rate this review an eight out of ten.
Great product for DNS Security and intrinsic component for Cisco's Zero Trust - SASE infrastructure.
Reliable Cloud Security and DNS Protection with Easy Deployment
Has required extensive customization for non-technical users and still needs better simplification
What is our primary use case?
The main use case for Cisco Umbrella is to protect our clients from various threats as it works on the DNS layer while firewalls and other security appliances work differently. We trust that no client should access any unverified website since it protects on the DNS layer to ensure their safety from malware and unknown sites. The Cisco Umbrella denies requests to untrusted websites, ensuring our clients are protected; we use it along with Hunters and firewalls for three layers of protection.
Cisco Umbrella is the first layer of security that protects me while surfing the net, identifying untrusted websites to prevent access. It guards against inside threats, while firewalls provide broader protection; Cisco Umbrella is especially useful for non-technical users who may not understand the risks.
What is most valuable?
Cisco Umbrella provides main benefits by not being too costly compared to other products, making it accessible for all clients, and I think it is essential for those who want complete safety.
The Intelligent Proxy feature of Cisco Umbrella is useful, though we do not elaborate much on this proxy feature.
The reporting and analytics capabilities in Cisco Umbrella are helpful, but since we have many clients, we cannot fully analyze everything. If any client objects to a website being protected, we analyze it and suggest whether they should proceed or not.
What needs improvement?
Customization for basic users can be complex, as it is targeted toward only technical users.
It would be beneficial if Cisco simplifies the customization process while still ensuring strong security to prevent unauthorized access.
Simplifying the customization part could enhance Cisco Umbrella, but overall, it is a good solution for me.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with Cisco Umbrella for the last year, not more than a year.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I would rate the stability of Cisco Umbrella nine out of ten.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
For scalability, I would rate it nine out of ten, as the product is good.
The solution cannot be scaled because it serves primarily as endpoint security.
For enterprise-level companies, it is easy to expand the number of users as they provide a dashboard that allows monitoring and solution delivery for all clients in one place.
How are customer service and support?
Whenever we ask Cisco for support, they definitely provide it, and we create a ticket for any threats we encounter that bypass their system.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup for Cisco Umbrella is simple; you just download the application, input the license, and use it without needing complex servers.
What about the implementation team?
For clients who do not know how to set up Cisco Umbrella, we do the setup for them, and they trust us.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I still have not found a main competitor for Cisco Umbrella.
Once I find a better solution among prices, I may switch over, but I currently do not think its price is too much.
What other advice do I have?
Cisco Umbrella is a supportive solution I provide separately, depending on the requirements of the customer, and we ask them what they require first.
Cisco is continuously improving Cisco Umbrella, experimenting with better versions while keeping us informed about changes and upgrades at no cost.
Cisco Umbrella should be available on desktop or laptop to ensure trust and security for non-technical users.
I rate Cisco Umbrella nine out of ten.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
A good system for protecting against browsing malicious websites
Policies deploy easily to ensure safe internet usage for students
What is our primary use case?
The primary use of Cisco Umbrella is to monitor our off-network devices, especially as a school district, to track what students are doing. We ensure they don't access any inappropriate sites. We leverage the DNS security when they take devices off our network.
How has it helped my organization?
Being able to create policies and deploy those policies to different groups benefits us in the way that we are actually compliant with our local regulations.
What is most valuable?
The feature of Cisco Umbrella I value most is the ease of use and deployment.
What needs improvement?
A feature I would appreciate seeing enhanced in Cisco Umbrella would be the ability to add or remove agents that we have, instead of just relying on how long the devices have been connected to the platform.
Instead of creating a TAC case, it would be better if we could just call in and they could answer us immediately.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've been using Cisco Umbrella for about six years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability and reliability of the Cisco Umbrella platform are great. Since we launched the platform, we have experienced only one or two outages with Umbrella, which is a notable achievement.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Cisco Umbrella does an excellent job of scaling with our company's growing needs. It does what we need. As we grow and continually acquire devices, we continue to deploy the agent to all of them. There's no problem with scaling.
How are customer service and support?
The customer service and technical support of Cisco Umbrella are great. I would rate the customer service and technical support a seven out of ten. To make it a ten, it would come down to improving the support.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I did not use another solution before switching to Cisco Umbrella.
How was the initial setup?
Deployment was actually a good experience. We installed all the VAs and started the agents. We did it from our centralized mobile device management.
What was our ROI?
The biggest return on investment when using Cisco Umbrella is to keep us compliant with our regulations. We're not a non-profit company, it's more about being compliant with our regulations to ensure the students are safe.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing for Cisco Umbrella is fair compared to other platforms out there for DNS security. We acquired it as a bundle with other Cisco purchases.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We have considered other solutions while using Cisco Umbrella. Ultimately, Cisco Umbrella is the one that benefits us the most. The main differences between the solutions we considered and Cisco Umbrella are the ease of use and deployment.
What other advice do I have?
I have not utilized the experience insights feature of Cisco Secure Access. At the moment, we're not using Cisco Secure Access. It's something we would want to explore at some point.
I have not yet visited the Cisco Insider Lab.
Overall, I would rate Cisco Umbrella a nine out of ten.
Ensures internet navigation safety and boosts productivity
What is our primary use case?
The main use case I use Cisco Umbrella for is to protect the users' internet navigation.
How has it helped my organization?
Cisco features benefit our organization by protecting the navigation of our employees, ensuring they are more productive and secure, and protecting our data through data loss prevention to prevent them from visiting fake websites.
What is most valuable?
The features of Cisco Umbrella I prefer most are DNS protection and traffic redirect.
With Cisco Talos's threat intelligence, we reduce the impact of malware traffic in our network, and we currently see the behavior of equipment and choose the correct sites.
Cisco Talos has helped us reduce the impact of malware traffic. We can see the behavior and choose the correct sites.
We're currently testing secure access with Umbrella in order to secure access to core applications.
It's a product that the user doesn't even know is there, even though it is protecting them. It's not hard on the equipment. And, for us, it centralizes everything, which improves productivity.
With the Experience Insights feature of Cisco Secure Access, we've seen impacts on the management of user connectivity by allowing us to deliver safe connectivity. We are testing the Secure Access product with Cisco Umbrella to improve our connectivity with our users in order to secure access to the corporate applications.
Cisco Umbrella is in the cloud, which is nice.
What needs improvement?
Cisco Umbrella could be improved by making the policies more granular, as in some cases, it's difficult to find the correct link to open a specific site securely.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Cisco Umbrella for about four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability and reliability of Cisco Umbrella are good. It has supplementary products for Secure Access, making it advantageous as a bundle. We don't have problems with Cisco Umbrella other than defining the users' profiles to be productive, but once the profiles are set up, it's done.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Cisco Umbrella scales very well with the growing needs of our organization. It is very easy to increase the implementation of Cisco Umbrella, being centralized and with an image of our computers, the Umbrella client is installed, making it simple to just provide the computer to our employee, and they commit to growth as the company grows.
How are customer service and support?
I evaluate customer service and technical support as excellent, as I have technical support from our partner, who helps us incredibly. On a scale of one to ten, I would rate it a ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Prior to adopting Cisco Umbrella, I was using another solution called Websense, just to block by categories.
How was the initial setup?
At the beginning, as with everything in life, it was a bit hard. It's hard when you don't know the solution. Now, it's very soft, very easy. Any changes are easy to make.
What was our ROI?
I have not seen a return on investment with Cisco Umbrella, as I didn't calculate it in practice. I know that having Cisco Umbrella is better than not having it, especially since I have few people to administer, meaning without it, I would need more employees to help me apply policies and review the laptops of the employees.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing has been fine.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before selecting Cisco Umbrella, I considered other solutions such as Palo Alto and Check Point.
What stood out to me in the evaluation process, both positive and negative when comparing options, was the charging or performance impact on the computer with the agent, which was a concern, but also the simplicity of installation without impacting the final user, along with the strong brand support from Cisco and Talos, which ensured that the inspection of URLs was very good.
What other advice do I have?
We did not purchase the solution on AWS Marketplace.
I rate Cisco Umbrella a nine out of ten.
Endpoint security successfully prevents ransomware attacks and ensures low latency
What is our primary use case?
My main use cases for Cisco Umbrella are basically endpoint security. We managed to stop some ransomware attacks thanks to Cisco Umbrella.
How has it helped my organization?
The Secure Internet Gateway benefits my company because now our whole traffic goes to the Umbrella Cloud and it gets checked there, so nothing malicious is coming into our network. Cisco Umbrella can stop it there super quickly. It's amazing.
What is most valuable?
My impression of Cisco Umbrella's Secure Internet Gateway is that it's awesome. I understand that my company got a Secure Internet Gateway a couple of months ago. When we first deployed it, we didn't have a Secure Web Gateway, however, it's excellent. Our traffic now goes to the Umbrella Cloud. It's checked there, so it's fantastic.
We are based in Argentina with a data center in Brazil, so the latency is really low, which is fantastic.
Secure Internet Gateway is a super powerful feature. There's definitely something rewarding about using Cisco Umbrella at the end of the day. For example, I saw it stop a ransomware attack right in front of me. I was extremely nervous when I saw the ransomware attack. Cisco protected us.
It's a really powerful solution that's really easy to deploy.
What needs improvement?
It's somewhat pricey for us, however, it's an awesome solution. If they did lower the price, maybe that could be something for improvements, maybe for the whole Cisco portfolio, thinking of Argentina and those kinds of countries.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Cisco Umbrella for around a year and a half, approximately.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Regarding the stability and reliability of the platform, it is super stable. I have experienced no problems at all.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I don't know how Cisco Umbrella scales with the growing needs of my company. That's up to our network administrator. Cisco Umbrella hasn't had any problems with scalability.
How are customer service and support?
We never had to contact the TAC for any kind of issues with Cisco Umbrella. We haven't had any issues with Cisco Umbrella yet. When I did need to contact the technical assistance team, they were extremely quick. It's an awesome service. From my experience with the support, I would rate them a nine out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We did not really consider other solutions before choosing Cisco Umbrella. We are super Cisco-focused in my company. Before Cisco Umbrella, we didn't have anything. We got hit with a ransomware attack and then we deployed Secure Endpoint. We deployed Cisco Umbrella. We deployed Duo, so we are super Cisco-focused.
How was the initial setup?
I would describe the experience deploying Cisco Umbrella overall as super easy. It was awesome. It was lovely to deploy it.
What was our ROI?
I have seen a return on investment when using Cisco Umbrella. Since we are Cisco distributors, we got it for zero dollars, so we didn't pay anything for it.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Regarding pricing, the setup costs, and the licensing of Cisco Umbrella, it's somewhat pricey for some customers. That said, it's worth the cost. It's a super powerful solution. We come from Argentina, which is a different country than the US, so our lifestyles are different.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
We did not really consider other solutions before choosing Cisco Umbrella.
What other advice do I have?
I have not utilized the Experience Insights feature of Cisco Secure Access. I don't really see it on a daily basis. I just configured the solutions now to sell to our customers, so I don't know what could be enhanced. My customers actually only give me good feedback about Cisco Umbrella, which is great.
I would rate Cisco Umbrella a ten out of ten overall.
Efficient traffic handling and enhanced threat protection enable streamlined DNS management
What is our primary use case?
My main use cases for Cisco Umbrella at this company are DNS security and preventing users from getting to websites that we deem not safe for their consumption and system protection.
How has it helped my organization?
The features of Cisco Umbrella benefit my company by allowing us to do protective DNS instead of URL filtering, which lets us avoid having to backhaul traffic and run it through a firewall in a data center. We can send that traffic out through our local WAN sites' egress internet circuit, and let that traffic natively be done in Cisco Umbrella in the cloud versus having that extra backhaul.
What is most valuable?
I don't know that there's a specific feature of Cisco Umbrella that I prefer most; I appreciate everything about the package. It's a secure source for DNS, and the way it does the proxy is very efficient for segmenting internal DNS results versus external.
What needs improvement?
I don't have an answer for how Cisco Umbrella can be improved, as it has been some time since I've worked with it. We're just rolling some of this out. We need more time to assess.
Hopefully, it works with the Canvas and starts feeding results into the AI canvas. That would be excellent.
For how long have I used the solution?
At this current company, I have been using Cisco Umbrella for two months, and before that, I used it for about four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Regarding the stability and reliability of the Cisco Umbrella platform, I have experienced no issues; it performs as advertised.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Cisco Umbrella scales effectively with the growing needs of my company; it's excellent, and I have experienced no issues.
How are customer service and support?
I haven't had to make any technical calls regarding customer service or technical support, so we are satisfied.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We are moving away from Palo Alto to Cisco, and we have to do a one-to-one swap first to get new firewalls in before licensing runs out on the old firewalls.
Once that is complete, we will move to our SIG rollout. The main differences between Palo Alto and Cisco Umbrella are that many features Palo offered were always purchased separately, whereas Cisco includes all of those features at less cost compared to purchasing them individually from Palo.
How was the initial setup?
We're currently migrating to Cisco from Palo Alto. Overall, the deployment has been good. It's simple, and there are a lot of white papers out there. There's not a lot of mystery. It just works.
What was our ROI?
From my point of view, the biggest return on investment when using Cisco Umbrella is that it helps simplify multiple verticals. We don't have a direct impact on DNS, however, it helps simplify the other teams' external DNS resolution, which makes their job easier, so they don't have to seek assistance from me, making my job easier as well.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with pricing, setup costs, and licensing of Cisco Umbrella has been that it's considerably cheaper than Palo. They did an excellent job when they came to the table and were very competitive.
What other advice do I have?
I have not yet utilized the experience insights feature of Cisco Secure Access.
Cisco Talos threat intelligence significantly influences my company's ability to act against emerging threats, giving us the chance to patch our side or take precautions when zero-day vulnerabilities emerge. Talos has been around forever; it's the largest non-governmental source of data on exploits available.
We're not at zero-trust yet. Cisco Secure Access will be playing a big part. Secure Access will play a big part in our identity, and it will tie in with ICE and posturing, feed our firewall information, and integrate with Splunk.
I own Cisco Umbrella's Secure Internet Gateway, however, we have not rolled it out yet. I'm looking forward to Cisco Umbrella working with the Canvas that we just saw at the Keynote this afternoon; if it starts feeding those results into that AI Canvas, that would be fantastic.
I saw the Cisco Insider, however, I am not familiar with what it is.
I'd rate the solution ten out of ten.
Ensures comprehensive protection with seamless threat logging and efficient policy management
What is our primary use case?
My main use cases for Cisco Umbrella are mostly for DNS security, ensuring we have policies in place to block anyone going to bad sites, as well as anything that comes up that we're not always watching to make sure they get blocked.
What is most valuable?
My favorite feature of Cisco Umbrella is probably just the DNS and the fact that when a security threat happens, all of that gets logged in their Umbrella portal, and it's very easy to find who's been accessing the site and how many people have accessed it, so that we can go to them and make sure they're not compromised.
The features of Cisco Umbrella benefit my company by providing less time to search for things through logs, to look for what we need. It's just one place to go, and we just search for it, and we find it really fast. The fact that there's a virtual database that has all that information is great on our portal.
What needs improvement?
I think Cisco Umbrella can be improved a lot. We've noticed some issues with the SWG where, when I'm connected, it thinks I'm in Miami, Florida instead of Savannah, Georgia. So when I go to weather.com or something else, it shows up for Miami, which is not where I'm at. That's one thing I think we could find ways to treat that traffic so that the person experiencing it is shown where they really are and not somewhere else.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using Cisco Umbrella for probably seven years now.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability and reliability of the Cisco Umbrella platform have been great. I have open cases with support, and they've been very supportive and helpful, allowing us to send information out there and get issues resolved, which is great.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Cisco Umbrella scales really well with the growing needs of my company, bringing the ability to ensure that people are safe and connected. I'm hoping that at some point we could get Cisco Umbrella on people's phones, so when they search on their mobile phones, they're protected. That's probably the only downside—there's not a product out there for mobile devices yet.
How are customer service and support?
Their customer service and technical support have been great. When we open up tickets and get that in place, they are very responsive and come up with solutions that work for us.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We didn't consider other solutions before choosing Cisco Umbrella because it's really the only one that we know works for us. There are other solutions, but as a smaller company, we find Cisco Umbrella tailored towards small businesses, allowing us to get specific features DNS and SWG without having to buy a huge product that we may not use.
How was the initial setup?
I would describe my experience with the deployment of Cisco Umbrella as very straightforward. It's easy to launch; the policies are really easy to set up. You just go to one dashboard, set everything up, and it's done with one click.
What was our ROI?
The biggest return on investment when using Cisco Umbrella for me is the ease of use of the fact that we've deployed this with our Cisco VPN Secure Client, so every computer has the Umbrella module in it. Each of our devices has that module in it that makes it connect automatically, and we're really happy with how easy it is to deploy and send it out to our firm.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with the pricing, setup costs, and licensing of the Cisco Umbrella solution has been great. We use the Cisco Security EA, so everything's through the Enterprise Agreement, and that's been great to sign up for. We've bundled that with our firewall stuff and our VPN, which brings the price down and adds the ability to grow. As we add more people, it automatically adds the necessary licenses for us, so we don't have to keep coming back and saying we need more.
What other advice do I have?
The features of Cisco Umbrella benefit my company by providing less time to search for things through logs, to look for what we need. It's just one place to go, and we just search for it, and we find it really fast.
My impression of Cisco Umbrella's Secure Internet Gateway is that it's great because we use that a lot in our really small branch offices, which means we don't have to deploy firewalls to those locations. They can connect using SWG to get internet access, but they're also protected without having a physical firewall in each location.
I assess the Cisco Secure Access solution as probably good to integrate, but we haven't really gone that far yet, so I'm hoping at some point we will. I'm hoping that once we get there, it'll be a lot easier to manage.
Cisco Talos threat intelligence influences my company's ability to act against emerging threats by being more of someone else watching it, and we're not having to pay attention to things, allowing us to concentrate on other stuff within the company. We're not having to micromanage our security, Talos takes care of that, and sends out updates to us, which is great.
I think it's just such an easy device to use, making my job easier by allowing me not to worry about threats coming in, and the fact that we can just easily block or accept things.
On a scale of 1-10, I rate Cisco Umbrella a 10.
