Increases trust in the data, saves time, and integrates easily with other tools

  • March 01, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I use the solution to link the technical and business terms and see the lineage between different technical terms. To track data flow, we start on the report level if there is a compliance requirement. We can see which data set a particular resource is using. We can see how the data table for the data set is created. We go back and trace the source. We try to define it from the source to the target end to end.

How has it helped my organization?

The product increases trust in the data. We know what is affected and where we need to update things if we change something.

What is most valuable?

The diagrams are good for data visualization. It is for technical and business terms. The technical lineage is for technical terms and data. Earlier, we used to maintain the data manually. Now, everything is automated. Sometimes, we still need to verify whether the lineage created automatically is correct or not because it might have a lot of information that is not needed. It is very easy to integrate Collibra Lineage with other tools. It provides APIs. It can be for any language like Java and Python. We can use the template provided in the marketplace.

What needs improvement?

We have to pay separately for each connector. The product must be cheaper. There must be a common license for the product.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution since 2016.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The tool is stable. It provides good column-level and view-level lineage. I did not find stored procedures in the product. In the documentation, the product says that it is possible for some sources, though. I have not worked on every source that the product supports.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The tool is scalable. The solution is used by the people who use Catalog in our organization. It is available to everyone. We have to configure it once. Once configured, it will be available to everyone in a read-only mode. We need two developers for maintenance.

How are customer service and support?

The support team is common for Catalog and Lineage. When we raise a concern, we must mention what our issue is. It is diverted automatically to the right team.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is similar to the setup of Catalog. Catalog is a pre-requisite. It must be installed and configured first. Once the Catalog is installed, we must run the script for Lineage on the same server by configuring the details we want to scan. We can read the documentation and follow it easily. If we get stuck somewhere, the support team will help us. It is pretty straightforward.

What was our ROI?

The tool helps trace the lineage of complex environments.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licensing cost depends on our requirements.

What other advice do I have?

I will recommend the tool to others. It saves time spent in creating lineage manually and maintains it over a long time. Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.

Effective for data discovery and supports multiple authentication methods, not just username and password

  • March 01, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Catalog is primarily used for metadata cataloging and enriching it with additional information, such as adding business terms. Then, if lineage support is available in the tool, we can link business terms to technical terms.

Additionally, we can store sample data. If there's a client requirement, we can link physical metadata with reports or datasets. This allows users who need access to a particular dataset to obtain it by creating a dataset from the Catalog metadata.

How has it helped my organization?

For data discovery, we create datasets. The most frequently used datasets are featured on the dashboard. Users can create their own if their requirements aren't met by the most frequently used datasets. We also create data requests, and owners can approve these requests, which adds a process layer to accessing particular datasets.

So, it has been effective for data discovery in our company.

I use different functionalities within the tool. I use Collibra Catalog for metadata management or Collibra Lineage for data governance.

Once configured, data in the Catalog will be automatically updated, reducing the need for manual maintenance. So, the automation feature has positively impacted our data management tasks.

What is most valuable?

The data lineage capability is valuable as it shows how different sources are connected and how data flows, which is crucial for projects like migrations.

Moreover, data lineage visualization in Collibra Catalog aids our data governance initiatives. It's very important for identifying impacted reports during updates, making it crucial for decision-making due to its ability to link business and technical terms.

What needs improvement?

I'd like to see more integration with other reporting sources like Qlik Sense, beyond the currently supported ones like Tableau and Power BI.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using it since 2019. It has been a long time.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Collibra updates the job server every quarter, so it's a stable solution that requires quarterly updates.

I would rate the stability a nine out of ten because it's quite good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It's scalable. We create different configurations for each data source to minimize latency and ensure efficient data governance. This decentralized approach makes it highly scalable.

I would rate it a nine out of ten because it's quite good. It supports multiple authentication methods, not just username and password. It supports mechanisms like Windows authentication or any other supported source, so there's no issue.

We make it available to everyone in the company. Moreover, most users are on the client side during implementation.

How are customer service and support?

The customer service and support have improved, and Collibra provides very good solutions now. They have a knowledge base that can answer our queries, suggesting solutions before we need to contact support.

How was the initial setup?

The setup is quite easy and takes about 30 minutes to an hour if you have everything you need. Configuration isn't very difficult.

Deployment involves creating a job server in the client-hosted environment and configuring it to connect to all data tools, like MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server. Then, we establish a connection between the job server and Collibra.

Data governance instances and the job server send requests to the actual data sources. Metadata gathered from the sources is passed to Collibra through this setup.

We're moving towards cloud solutions, so Collibra Data Intelligence is on the cloud. Collibra Edge can be server-based, but the job server can also be on-premises. It supports both setups, but the direction is towards cloud-only solutions.

What about the implementation team?

One person can maintain the solution, and we need one service account for it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Collibra offers a per-user licensing model.

What other advice do I have?

Overall, I would rate the solution an eight out of ten because we can connect to multiple sources or create custom connectors, making it a good solution.

I highly recommend it.

Customizable platform with efficient cataloging features

  • November 06, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the product for classification based on the different regulations and compliance requirements.

What is most valuable?

The platform is customizable. In comparison, Informatica Axon has predefined facets. Meanwhile, Collibra lets us create custom assets. It helps us build a powerful workflow mechanism where there can be any stewardship, including issue management governing assets using policies, regulations, or business rules. They are integrated very well. It has a lot of connectors with different source systems and efficient cataloging features.

What needs improvement?

There could be more integration similar to Snowflake, for instance. They do support integration, but complete lineage is not possible. Certain implementations, including lineage maps, could be user-friendly. At the moment, there needs to be more lineage between data sources. It needs improvements in terms of attribute connectivity during data transformation.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Collibra Governance for seven or eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable platform.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Collibra Governance is suitable for enterprise businesses. It is a SaaS product. Thus, the end users don’t have to maintain scalability or maintenance.

How are customer service and support?

The technical support team is responsive.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have worked with Informatica Axon and Data Catalog. In comparison, Collibra has better workflow management features. I recommend it for technical usage as well. However, Axon is more user-friendly for creating lineage diagrams. It has ready-to-use templates for deployment.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup process is complicated. However, once you get good training and understanding of the system, it is very straightforward. Some of the configurations require support. It takes around a week or two to complete all the configuration for the existing ecosystem.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

For Informatica, we have to buy cataloging and governance separately. Meanwhile, Collibra offers one structure for both. We purchase its annual license. There is an extra cost for additional users.

What other advice do I have?

I rate Collibra Governance an eight out of ten.

A reliable solution that integrates well with several intakes, but it can be a bit expensive

  • October 27, 2023
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

Collibra is for the classification of data. Collibra is being sourced to all the intakes for the company, which might be legacy systems or new systems or might be lineage as well. Collibra takes up and does its own governance over there, and the data is fed into Ataccama. Ataccama and Collibra seem to be cascaded, but Collibra is the first player. But that doesn't mean it saves a lot for Ataccama.

What is most valuable?

The solution's most valuable features are its scalability and how it can be integrated to any other intakes.

What needs improvement?

Collibra gives a lot of facilities in the cloud, but achieving those facilities on-prem becomes a big challenge. Collibra should loosen up those areas there and try to give stakes for that. The uses can vary. They can be limited to a small amount, or they can be a huge chunk. If Collibra thinks the utilization should be controlled and monitored by them on a cloud level, making for highly scalable data, it's good for them. But when the customer needs it, Collibra will be in the minute volume, in which case they will go for the on-premise service. That's what I feel Collibra lacks because some things cannot be integrated for on-premise customers.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Overall, Collibra is a stable tool. Because of the scalability, the volumes are big, and you must have patience. That's where Collibra gets conflicted. There is highly scalable data with big databases connected. You'll need patience to wait for the batch lists to be completed. Calibra is slow but stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Collibra is highly scalable. Since Collibra works with Ataccama, 60 to 70 people use this solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is exhaustive, but I cannot say that it's difficult or easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Collibra is a bit expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend Collibra only when customers have a very sparse intake. Such as if they have primitive lineages and data sources that they cannot make obsolete or remove. Suppose they have varieties of intakes. In that case, I definitely would ask customers to go for Collibra. That's not because an intake can be integrated into Collibra. The profitability is that Collibra is integrated at the output end. The team is working on visualization. The service team is very preemptive and efficient. Collibra will give you a good scoop. If a company is vast enough and has various intakes, databases, and sources, Collibra is good for them.

I rate Collibra a seven out of ten. Depending on the client, the rating may vary. If someone has told you that they have various sparse intakes and need to govern their data, Collibra will be a nine out of ten. But for a company with a limited intake, I would say that Collibra would be a load for them on the price side.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

User-friendly solution that provides centralized and collaborative framework

  • September 07, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

There are different use cases, including integration with other applications, setting up operating models for specific business domains, such as finance or manufacturing, defining domain structures, and implementing data quality rules and scorecards. The specific use cases can vary from client to client, but they generally involve leveraging Collibra's capabilities to establish a strong governance framework and improve data management across the organization.

What is most valuable?

I appreciate its user-friendly interface. It facilitates explaining and handing over the data between the teams. It enables a linear view of the data assets across different levels, providing a comprehensive understanding. While other tools may offer similar features, Collibra Governance stands out for its integration capabilities, particularly with platforms like Google Cloud. It is also well-regarded for its modern and cloud-based approach, which aligns with the needs of clients that utilize multiple cloud solutions.

What needs improvement?

There are certain limitations and difficulties regarding the migration of complex data quality rules, as the tool may struggle with lengthy calculations and longer loading times. Our clients reported that they have experienced runtime errors in those scenarios, Also, setting up the tool and seeing real results can take a significant amount of time and manual effort. Many clients struggle to find experienced consultants due to the tool's extensive features, and this shortage impacts the deployment process and overall value realization. The pricing structure is significantly expensive and not affordable for all the clients. I would suggest that Collibra consider offering a lighter version of the tool for small companies. Currently, the main focus of their strategy lies in targeting medium and large enterprises.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using this solution for a year now.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It provides good stability. We didn't have many complaints about it. There have been some challenges with complex rules, particularly about data quality.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It offers good scalability that is suitable for medium to large companies.

How are customer service and support?

They provide excellent support, and there is positive feedback in the market regarding their support services. The collaboration between Collibra Governance and their clients fosters mutual learning and improvement.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used other solutions, like Azure and Informatica, but Collibra Governance offers the best experience regarding the user-friendly nature of the interface. While the other tools have their strengths, Collibra stands out for its compatibility features. It is a competitive solution that offers a variety of comprehensive capabilities.

What about the implementation team?

Configuring is relatively easy with the right training and materials, which is essential for users to understand and utilize the tool effectively. The complexity of the configuration itself depends on the scope of the project, with smaller use cases typically taking one to two months. For larger projects, a team of three to four people, including a developer, engineer, and governance specialist, may be required for deployment. The maintenance is straightforward. Overall, it is a user-friendly tool for administrators.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Generally, it is a rather expensive solution compared to some other tools in the market, but I found it to be fair-priced for its capabilities. The cost barrier often causes potential clients, especially small companies, to opt for other choices. I saw many clients coming back to Collibra after realizing that other tools have significant limitations. The cost factor also varies depending on the size of the company, as larger organizations have a bigger capital to invest in multiple tools.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend considering it, as it provides valuable features. It may be advisable to evaluate and assess the requirements and preferences of the client before making a final decision. I would rate the solution eight out of ten.

A user-friendly for those who are not technically inclined and useful for cataloging various reports

  • August 31, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

I use Collibra Catalog for cataloging various reports, data elements, and tables, along with schema, associated with all the various attributes of the element itself, like business rules and sensitive data.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable features of the solution are the ability to PnP with all the various DBs in the background and to ensure that the Tableau is updated and any changes are visual while notifying about the integration to various business rules, data rules, data quality rules, and systems.

What needs improvement?

The tool's overall functionalities need to improve since, nowadays, many tools, from a business perspective, are easy to use.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have experience with Collibra Catalog. I am an end-user of the tool. My company is a customer of the product.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Stability-wise, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability-wise, it is a good solution. I rate the solution's scalability a seven and a half or eight out of ten.

Collibra Catalog is continuously being used in our company in as many ways as we can incorporate from various partners on the data elements and data landscaping, so we are slowly building it out.

How was the initial setup?

Though unsure, I feel that the initial setup of Collibra Catalog is pretty complex over the system.

What other advice do I have?

I think Collibra Catalog is one of the better products out there. The ability to PnP in the back-end and get all the updates is amazing in the solution. Collibra has its own rules engines and has incorporated other rules engines as well.

Collibra Catalog is simple to use and user-friendly for those who are not technically inclined since it is easy to find while also easy to see data lineage diagrams.

I rate the overall product an eight out of ten.

A useful solution with a great range of features

  • August 31, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution to organize data. The IT team has access to the data and knows where it is stored, but when it comes to legal compliances and various regulations, the business itself does not have control over where the data is stored and how it is stored. Typically, the business wants to have control over where the data is stored, the various data classifications, and data sensitivity. That is the main reason why we use Collibra Governance.

What is most valuable?

I appreciate the range of features it has. Based on the reviews of some of the other tools we use, we find that the other tools lack in certain areas. If I had to choose a comprehensive tool across all the fields of data governance, I would opt for Collibra Governance.

The most valuable feature is the Technical Lineage. The fact that you can trace the auditability of a particular field or attribute across various systems is very useful.

What needs improvement?

There are a few things that need improvement. From a usability perspective, customers usually find some areas of the solution a bit complex. It takes a long time for the customers to get used to the UI and the interface. Another thing that the customers complain about when they opt for Collibra is the pricing. There are fees for additional features which mess with the customers' overall budgets.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Collibra Governance for about two and a half years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a very stable solution. I would give it a nine out of ten. It works very well compared to other solutions on the market.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of the solution is good. I give it an eight out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

The response time of technical support is typically high.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Neutral

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Nowadays, most customers are looking into Microsoft Stack, so we use Microsoft Purview as well, although Calibra Governance is our preferred choice since it's much more stable than Purview.

Up until now, Collibra Governance has been the market leader and is always the first one to add new features. Purview tries to bring out a lot of features as fast as possible, but those features are not very stable and have a lot of bugs. Purview has the upper hand when it comes to the usability of the app system. It is easier for customers to understand the feature list while using Purview. For example, after using both solutions for a few weeks, they usually have a better grasp of Purview than Callibra Governance.

How was the initial setup?

Since it is a SaaS platform in a way, the solution is deployed on Collibra cloud. The deployment is pretty straightforward since Collibra deploys it on its own. It takes about a week to get the core of the system up and running. After, we configure it to fit the specific needs.

On a scale from one to ten, the simplicity of the setup would be an eight.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Collibra Governance's pricing is based on its features. You get what you pay for. There are other solutions that are cost-effective but lower quality. With Collibra, you get a fair-value product if you pay a bit more.

What other advice do I have?

I would not recommend using the Big Bang approach with Collibra Governance. You should understand the bigger picture of what you want to do. Start off with a few systems and four small modules. Get feedback from the business and then continuously evolve it. It is better to have the implementation spread out over a one-year period than have it crammed down within three to six months while trying to implement everything at once.

I would say that Collibra Governance is suitable for small to medium businesses.

Overall, I rate the solution a nine out of ten.
