Performs efficiently but requires overcoming a learning curve

  • June 05, 2025

What is our primary use case?

I am mostly dealing with Ubuntu Linux systems currently. Instead of using Windows, we have been given Ubuntu Linux, and that is what we have been using for our day-to-day activities. When we were due for an update, we switched from Windows to Ubuntu Linux, which has been a few months ago.

What is most valuable?

I believe everything works faster than it used to in Windows. I have never experienced a crash on Ubuntu Linux. The system works great with perfect stability.

What needs improvement?

There were some initial issues with logging into the system, but I do not remember much about them now. Currently, there are no issues. I do not think Ubuntu Linux has a robust documentation library.

For how long have I used the solution?

I am probably not in a place to say much about this as I have only been using it for a few months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I have never experienced a crash on Ubuntu Linux. The system has been completely stable, which makes it deserve a perfect score. The system works great without any crashes.

How are customer service and support?

IT helps at times, so that is who we reach out to. It was our IT support person who helped us out. We have never had to reach out to Ubuntu Linux directly.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have not been working with Microsoft products recently. I have been working with other tools. I have not touched any Microsoft tools this year. Last year, I used Microsoft products minimally.

What was our ROI?

I am not sure about the return on investment. The higher-ups would likely know if they saved money since Microsoft is licensed while Ubuntu Linux does not require a license.

What other advice do I have?

There are many differences between Ubuntu Linux and Windows as they are totally different systems. You need to have more knowledge about Linux before using Ubuntu Linux. Although it is designed as a desktop system, basic knowledge is still required. Windows can be used by any layman, which is the main difference.

I do not know much about security breaches or potential issues. The Wi-Fi and wireless capabilities work perfectly fine.

Excluding the learning curve, I would rate it a 10. However, considering the learning curve, I would give it a six or seven.

My advice would be to have patience.

Overall rating: 10 out of 10.

Has an easy setup process, but the GUI needs improvement

  • January 18, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the product for end-user applications and site management across workstations and servers within our environment.

What is most valuable?

Ubuntu Linux's most valuable feature is its open-source nature.

What needs improvement?

There is room for improvement, particularly in the GUI aspect of the product. We encounter issues while accessing GUI compared to Red Hat or CentOS. The simulation tools could be easy to use and facilitate efficient integration with remediation tools similar to Duo on CentOs.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Ubuntu Linux for six or seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability is better than that of other open-source platforms.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We used Red Hat before.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend user-friendly options like Ubuntu or CentOS for those venturing into Linux for the first time. They provide easier configurations as well. They should also explore Rocky Linux, a free and open-source distribution similar to CentOS. They have a good open-source community. However, sometimes, it isn't easy to find resolutions. This particular area needs improvement.

I rate the product a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

An easy-to-use solution for desktops, MCE with Kubernetes platform but lacks support, stability and scalability

  • August 31, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is most valuable?

Ubuntu Linux is easy to start, and MicroK8s is easy to deploy. Plug into the back-end storage and networking is also easy.

It is good to start with 3-4 nodes, but hard to scale. For production grades like 20 or 100 nodes, we go with the RedHat for on-premise.

What needs improvement?

The support team is not good and needs to be improved. The user community is excellent and helpful, but some questions are unanswered. Also, stability and scalability could be improved.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Ubuntu Linux as an end user for six years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The tool could be more stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product’s scalability is not better. RedHat is better. We’ve more than ten users using this product. We plan to increase the usage when there is a requirement or specification.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is easy. Deploying OS is fast and takes less than a day.

We can do the installation on a small scale without consultants, but when it comes to scale.

Ubuntu is an OS. You need the specification, storage, network, IP, etc., and deploy it by orchestration or just do the standalone installation infrastructure.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

If the customer wants to start, there is no license required. It is all free, but they must purchase the production license.

What other advice do I have?

Mostly, the product is on-premise, but in some cases, we managed to deploy applications in the cloud.

The solution is easy and simple to start because of complete documentation. When you go for production, we must purchase the hardware and OS license.

Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises
