Customizing NX is complicated just like other CAD tools. may be that will improve.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use NX extensively in our Product design and manufacturing process.

Complex but outdated and confusing CAD program

  • July 29, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
NX is very capable in tools and have a comprehensive set of features in 3D modelling. The Parasolid core is stable and capable of handling many complex geometries. Simulation tools are very advanced once you have taken all the time needed to learn them.
What do you dislike about the product?
First the price is absolutely too high for what you get. Everything cost extra in terms of licensing and some basic functions demands extra modules to work. The functionality is not much better than Solidworks or Inventor but cost many times more.

The user interface is once you learned it decent but it is a mix of new ribbons and old menus. Some dialogs are also very outdated in terms of user experience, you have no clue how to use them without googling for hours. There is also a limited source of information to find on Internet so you have to sign a license from Siemens for "Learning advantage". Very clever to make the program so difficult to use that you have to sign an extra help to understand it. At my work we are constant struggling with understanding how to work with the software and every newcomer have a steep learning curve if they are used to other more user friendly CAD software like Solidworks or Inventor.

The performance is poor and large assemblies tends to be very slow and sluggish to work with. Back in the 90's NX was known for being one of the best in terms of large assemblies but is has not developed at all since then. Multi-core CPU's and GPU cores are not utilized well and the waiting time for updating models ans drawings can be very time consuming. The Parasolid core shows it's age and belongs to another decade than more modern design software that handles advanced lightning and material surfaces much better and faster.

NX is built of Application modules and these are not working well together all the time. It is also a mix of old features and newly added replacements without good interaction. For example layers can be handled in two different ways and depending which you use the outcome will be different. Working with drawings is a nightmare in terms of user friendliness. Many basic features are confusing and counter productive to use and at the same time sometimes very slow. If you are used to make drawings in Solidworks or Inventor you will find NX to be 20 years behind in terms of effectiveness. For example Balloons and Part lists are divided into "Manual" and "Auto" and they are not compatible with each other. "Auto balloons" can not be stacked but "Manual baloons" can and so on. There is no logic behind some of the features implementation.

In general the software is stable but there are some irritating bugs here and there that you have to be aware of for every release. Siemens are not fast on fixing these and send out service packs. Sometimes the only solution is to buy "the next version" for a lot of money. Siemens really know how to make money from customers.

The compatibility to other softwares are quite poor if they are not compatible with the Parasolid core. It heavily relies on old formats such as STEP and IGES. JT format is OK but exporting and importing is time consuming not without problems. The choice of formats to import from other "Automative" softwares such as Creo or Catia is rather poor. If you work in other business NX is not very good in compatibility.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Electrical Plant design and layout drawings. It has a wide set of modelling features.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Be aware of your needs and your employees knowledge before considering buying the high price tag for NX. There are much more affordable and easier to use softwares that can do almost the same, and sometimes more, then NX which starts to show signs of outdated interface and poor user experience. If working with large assemblies you shall also do a performance check if it can handle all information and geometry well.

What do you like best about the product?
Easy access to most-all commands. Smooth 3D modelling
What do you dislike about the product?
Lack of keyboard shortcuts, I would prefer more shortcuts to access commands
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Modifying existing models to accommodate current projects. It makes the process much easier

Great program for complex parts and assemblies.

  • April 04, 2018

What do you like best about the product?
NX could be used at a lower level/entry-level CAD users, but also is a powerful tool for skilled users.
What do you dislike about the product?
I am very familiar with SolidWorks, so there was a learning curve in learning the new commands and placements of tools.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am reverse engineering small parts to find ways to make them more efficient.

CAD Analysis

  • April 04, 2018
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that you can do a lot of different simulations and analyses
What do you dislike about the product?
It's not very user friendly. The mating features are extremely touchy and sometimes you have to align the models to get them to accept the mating you want.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am doing remediation and looking how components mate together. It can show me simulations, interference, and calculate clearance.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's not very user friendly. It might be beneficial to take a class first.

Low User Friendliness

  • January 27, 2018
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Positives: Compact file structure, an entire assembly and drawing can be contained within the same file, making it easier to control transfers and storage of designs without file management issues. Not sure what the size limitations on it are.
What do you dislike about the product?
User friendliness seems very low. Part of it is that it is VERY different than Solidworks, Creo, and CATIA as far as modeling strategies go. A number of our competitors use it, and we get translations from them and they are generally very hard to work with in any of the the three software I mentioned above. If you need to convert between programs bringing para solids (.x_t files) into Solidworks from NX works best for me. Not a fan of the layer/hide-show method used, very similar to MasterCam though. Also there seems to be a limited amount of searchable information on the internet to help solve issues or figure out ways to tackle modeling.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our biggest advantage from the program is handling 3rd party data and customer data from some key customers. The interface puts people off from going the extra mile to learn the software well enough to see other benefits above our core 3 software.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Implement as many training courses as possible, there isn't much information out there for quick searches compared to other software so those classes will be very important.

Soft That Leads to the Future

  • December 16, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Layout of and customizability of the tool ribbons, ability to create, and use, journals for repetitive tasks. Being able to load multiple versions of a given part to allow for quick caparison of those parts with surface meshing
What do you dislike about the product?
processing times to perform tasks are extensive at times
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Designing the future of transportation with electric and autonomous vehicles. ability to do initial analysis within the softawre
Recommendations to others considering the product:
use multiple monitors so that you can view the assembly structure on one screen while doing your main work on the other. Something to consider is the use of journals for frequently completed tasks. NX allows you to record task you perform and assign those tasks to a radial button letting you select the one button to run a string of actions.

Nx for Beginners

  • July 14, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It is similar to other CAD programs so switching from one to the other is simple.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing so far. I enjoy using the program.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
How to innovatively design parts. Not too many benefits just yet as I just started using it.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Use the tutorials online and the help bar. It is very helpful :)

Quality CAD Software

  • March 15, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The software is robust, there are never designs which you cannot create using the tools allowed. There is a decent community for learning the software.
What do you dislike about the product?
The learning curve is steep. Without having taken a class on NX, I would not easily be able to find its features.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This software allows me to easily create 3D models of parts, which I translate to 3D printed prototypes.
