What InterSystems IRIS really is

  • August 10, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
in my opinion is kind of a beast, its fast a hell compared to other alternatives and it's come to be more dominant when you are going into scaled things up like crunching huge piles of data or running transactions and doing some real-time analytics, its keep going and had good stability features
the additional components like FHIR and HL7 make it really useful for some of missions and play nice Togher without make you go crazy, it's really flexible system and you can choice to store data in all sorts of ways, from SQL to document without being coupled to only one way, the interface is pretty clean and have brilliant documentation, it's easy to use and easy to implement, and for the developers is a really good "framework" like to manage and scale data in daily basis, the integration of IRIS with another frameworks or languages is great, in the latest versions they add the python support and its open the opportunities to even make and run AI models on IRIS platform
What do you dislike about the product?
first things first, the main languages, is not comfortable like a traditionally languages, like Object Script is not something you found as Java or Python in the developers community, but its nice language, had a lot of "cool" ways to do stuff, the documentation is huge and good source for data but it's really easy to get lost in it, IRIS is NOT cheap at all, its serous platform with a price tag to match, and the hardware you need to manage to perform it like it's should is not an affordable one
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Let's keep it simple, we worked on the financial area of the company, to manage an records of all of our clients and all of our database, all the transactions as a growing business with a millions of invoices and transactions and make it really fast to manage is really crazy, like building a dashboard from our simplest data can take it to load a one-hour or two in tadeonal db. but in cache and IRIS its can take 20 seconds, so as a backend for our services its really helping out to be there when the client needed us, like fast analyzing sells, fast dashboards, fast transactions between screens, it's not simple when it's come up to millions of records is not a simple business task.

Bridging Systems with InterSystems IRIS

  • August 10, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
What I really like about InterSystems IRIS is how fast and reliable it is. It can handle huge amounts of data and transactions without slowing down. I also love that it’s flexible; you can use SQL, NoSQL, object storage, or even work directly with its unique “globals” all in the same system. The built-in tools for connecting different systems (like HL7 and FHIR in healthcare) are a big win, and having analytics built right in means you can get insights from your data without a lot of extra work. As a developer, I appreciate that I can use different programming languages, ObjectScript, Python, or Java or even mix them depending on what the job needs. And above all, it’s dependable, which is essential for systems that can’t afford downtime.
It is very simple to use and administratively friendly.
The customer support is great often responded within a day.
Based on my frequency of use, it is very reliable and developer-friendly.
What do you dislike about the product?
The main challenge with IRIS is that it takes some time to learn, especially if you’ve never worked with ObjectScript or globals before. Some of the older tools for managing and developing on it feel a bit outdated compared to newer software environments. The licensing can be a bit complicated and may be pricey for smaller projects or startups. The community is helpful but smaller than big open-source platforms, so finding certain answers can take longer. And while the documentation covers a lot, some advanced features could use simpler, real-world examples to make them easier to pick up.
The ease of implementation and Documentation for certain integration scenarios can be complex for beginners
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is solving the maintainance or building a complex database structure and also helping with its robust ability

InterSystems IRIS: Powerful, but with barriers to adoption and learning

  • July 24, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I really like the various functions when doing the SELECT, I think it's great how the SELECTS work in the cache, so that when you make a query, the next query is much faster. I also like having an interface for creating namespaces and dealing with various things in IRIS.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't like that knowledge about IRIS is so little disseminated; there is a lack of community, so there are problems for which we can easily find answers on the internet, and the IRIS documentation is quite poor compared to other technologies like Laravel, for example, which provides various examples and ways to use it. The IntelliSense also doesn't work very well because it doesn't give suggestions on what to use and explanatory suggestions on how to use it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The biggest problem that IRIS solves today, as I see it, is the enormous capacity to work with a large volume of data.

InterSystems IRIS: Analysis of Advantages and Limitations

  • July 24, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Excellent read and write performance, even with large volumes of data.
It uses a proprietary database structure (globals) that is extremely efficient.
What do you dislike about the product?
The ObjectScript language has an unconventional syntax, which can be challenging for developers familiar with languages like JavaScript, Python, or Java.
Additionally, concepts such as globals and namespaces require time and hands-on experience to fully grasp.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
InterSystems IRIS helps us address key challenges related to data integration, performance, and scalability in mission-critical applications.
As a software factory, we develop solutions for clients in the healthcare, logistics, and financial sectors, where real-time data processing and reliability are essential. IRIS provides a unified platform that combines a high-performance database, native interoperability tools, and robust analytics capabilities.

A very powerful, flexible database and application system with a fair learning curve

  • July 24, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The flexibility of access via multi modal data access, globals, object, SQL, JSON, XML, REST, vectors and other approaches mean you can use the system to back end many different projects. Equally you can use all the different routes and technologies to access one back end so there is no need to duplicate data elsewhere, or store data in multiple formats for quick or easy retrieval.
Uptime and reliability are top notch, real time system mirroring and HA functionality is bomb proof.
What do you dislike about the product?
Iris documentation for admin / developers isn't the best. They are working on it, but there is still a large learning curve to getting into development. It's worth it as it's a very powerful solution, but still.
It's not a well known solution so IT decision makers need a lot of persuading to take it on board, despite its huge presence in healthcare / finance.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Full ERP style system provision. Business process management from end to end with ops, finance, management reporting, data analysis. Supporting external tools like websites, portals, mobile device solutions.
The system has the ability to support all this and is reliable and easy to manage.
Setting up a solution takes time and skill, but once its operational normal IT helpdesk users can keep it ticking along for most things.

Practicality in all types of HL7 to JDBC connections

  • July 23, 2025
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The flexibility of the connectivity adapters of InterSystems IRIS is remarkable. The platform ensures robust integration with multiple standards, ranging from essential healthcare protocols, such as HL7 over TCP/IP, to established web service standards like SOAP.
What do you dislike about the product?
Although it has a very cool messaging system where it is possible to have a complete view of the entire integration flow, I believe that the resending of messages can be improved, thus facilitating the tests.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Interoperability resources are used for the conversion and exposure of services on an input and output data bus, and traceability resources facilitate the management and control of integrations.

What do you like best about the product?
The variety of data storage options (objects, relational tables, unstructured data) as well as the variety of options for interacting with the data.
What do you dislike about the product?
Too many options can sometimes lead to confusion. Which option is best ?
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
allowed us to develop a web application where our product users have no need to understand Intersystems IRIS. They interact with our product through a web browser.

Amazing Interoperability Tool

  • August 03, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
InterSystems Iris right of the bat has some incredible out of the box features that deliver poweful connections and transfomations so that data is recieved, transfmormed and sent out quickly.
What do you dislike about the product?
I think the biggest downside to InterSystems Iris (and is actually small in comparison to what it could be) is that if you want to add custom functionaility you will have to learn a the InterSystems Specific programming language (at least a little) to get it built out. It follows pretty standard programing rules and syntax though so it won't take long to get moving with it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are using InterSystems IRIS for Health (HealthConnect) to connect all of our Hospitals & Vendor Systems to our Electronic Medical Record. It's user interface is much simpler to use than our pervious system and offers some great features for settings that reduce work time -- like development wizards and drag & drop settings.
