SUSE Rancher is a great product for professional entry into the Kubernetes environment

  • October 04, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The product has an easy installation for laboratory projects, which helped us a lot to speed up the proof of concept process and gave us the necessary experience to face the first delivery of a production environment. There is also support from the manufacturer in Portuguese-BR, which is a big step forward for me. The product is frequently used by the operations team and the GUI environment is more than sufficient to perform routine tasks.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are some points to improve in the product, such as some facilities for configuring the final production environment. All the documentation says that specialized support from SUSE technicians is necessary to deliver the production environment, but all other products are like this too. The lack of native integration with a CI tool was also noted, but was overcome by CI scripts that integrate with the product's CD feature, but due to no integration with CI, in certain projects up to the CD we are executing by script outside the tool resource.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Before using Rancher, we were in a test environment that grew into a productive environment with Docker Swarm. Although the tool worked well, it started to increase the complexity in product administration and, therefore, we started managing microservices projects with Rancher. With this, administration, operation and even other functionalities such as CI/CD were implemented and delivered in a more professional, more performant and more resilient environment.

On-Premise Kubernetes Cluster Management

What do you like best about the product?
We need to run our Kubernetes-Clusters in an Air-Gapped environment and need the opportunity to manage all these clusters and also append new ones in short time. Originally we came from SUSE CaaSP and were "forced" into Rancher. In retrospect, this was a good decision, Rancher comes with everything we need and - if we exclude the last releases (e.g. 2.7.5) - it's pretty stable too. With the fleet integration, we can pretty much deploy a new cluster with all managed services we provide we just a few clicks.
What do you dislike about the product?
* Releases could be a bit more stable
* Multi-tenancy in Fleet still missing
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As said before, we need to run our cluster in an Air-Gapped environment, so "the cloud" is not a thing.
You can run Rancher completly Air-Gapped and still manage and deploy new clusters with just a few clicks. With the Fleet integration we make sure all downstream clusters come with our Managed-Services.

An efficient operating system with good stability

  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

SUSE Linux Enterprise is an operating system for server workstations, desktop computers, and other platforms.

What needs improvement?

They should improve their educational portal. There should be a dedicated lab to learn about features similar to Red Hat's portal.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using SUSE Linux Enterprise for seven months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It is a stable platform.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The product's scalability is better than DevSecOps. We have enterprise and medium customers using it.

How are customer service and support?

There are limitations in terms of getting administrative rights or comprehensive data support.

How was the initial setup?

The installation and registration process was complicated because of security settings. We didn't receive support services to tackle the difficulties. It requires four to five executives for maintenance.

What other advice do I have?

I rate SUSE Linux Enterprise an eight out of ten.

Rancher Review

What do you like best about the product?
It is a pretty solid out of the box solution for running K8s, especially in cases, where you have to run everything on prem or bare metal. A good selection of needed tools are already included and you can choose if you want to keep and use them on your own, there is no real vendor lock in.
What do you dislike about the product?
The Documentation is sometimes outdated or there are missing important sections, especially if you dig into technical details.
The support is not as helpful as it could be - you often have to repeat the question as the supports tends to send standard answers in the first round.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We need to run on premise K8s clusters. Rancher provides a solid out of the box solution, where do not have to collect all pices on your own. You also get a fancy GUI what saves time and opens the way for less techy collegues.

Orchestrate everywhere

What do you like best about the product?
We introduced Rancher to build and manage our on-premise Kubernetes environments as well as to extend them into the cloud, i.e. AWS EKS currently, Azure AKS will follow soon.

Rancher helped us a lot to hide the complexity of a Kubernetes setup and to maintain a good overview over our container landscape.

Additionally, a lot of tools can be integrated like Helm, Grafana or even AIOPs with OPNI
What do you dislike about the product?
When extending Rancher to the cloud, we would have whished for a little more "turn-key" abilites, it is still necessary to do manual settings there to get the initial connection running.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Rancher helps us to provision Kubernetes cluster and deploy container based solution in a standardized way.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
managing k8s everywhere, no need for different tools

Rancher - and finally the power is with us ... and it keeps growing

  • August 06, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It is impossible to remain indifferent towards Rancher. Either one loves and accepts him in his entirety, or hates him precisely for what it is .... and it is open, good, versatile, with huge possibilities and potential to use :) Its main advantages in my opinion are openness, massive community support, freedom to change and adapt to the required needs. In addition, its well-thought-out design and well-directed development fits the needs of the market and the changing IT environment. Currently also available, the Prime and Suite versions are a comprehensive offer for companies, including a complete environment for creating containerization and virtualization platforms anywhere with many add-ons such as security, storage, observability and application collection (SLSA) and many more.
What do you dislike about the product?
The environment is constantly evolving and providing new functionalities, so any potential problems and shortcomings are a natural consequence of this development, especially since it is a platform for managing entire ecosystems across all infrastructure variants. In the current phase of its development, it is achieving ever-increasing stability and maturity, offering more and more interesting flavors, especially in enterprise offerings.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Overall, it is a great platform for managing multi-cluster k8s environments :)
The benefits are obvious: a single point of view, the ability to observe and manage the entire infrastructure, including container platforms in any location.

On balance a positive experience with some frustrations

What do you like best about the product?
I like the way that Rancher interacts directly with VMware vSphere - providing a simple interface through which you can configure one or more machine pools - making getting up and running with an on-premises Kubernetes environment straightforward.
What do you dislike about the product?
I believe that the documentation lets Rancher down, the document isn't as rich as that provided by similarly sized technology companies. We often have to refer to support requests and forum articles for guidance on specific issues. Ultimately, when it works its great - but there have been a couple of occasions where Rancher has failed (either fully or partially and it has proved very difficult or in some cases impossible to resolve).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We primarily deploy our applications on EKS within AWS. However, we have a customer request for an on-premise installation in a prexisting vSphere datacenter. Rancher's ability to interact with VMware vSphere and handle the configuration and on-going management of a Kubernetes cluster proved invaluable.

I've been manager of an Orange team using Rancher for 7 years

  • August 04, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Rancher is an open source orchestrator.
Rancher is multi-cluster and multi-cloud, which reinforces our independence.
Rancher facilitates perimeter management via RBAC functionalities (fine-tuned, secure management of user rights).
Rancher provides a graphical interface that simplifies the use of Kubernetes.
What do you dislike about the product?
Rancher's lifecycle management is inadequate : for example, there's no automatic tool for migrating our clusters from RKE1 to RKE2.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
we use Rancher to offer Orange an internal Kubernetes as a service solution, thus simplifying Kubernetes adoption and accelerating Orange service releases

Modern Container Management with Rancher

  • August 03, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Rancher provides an easy-to-use interface that simplifies the setup, deployment, and management of Kubernetes clusters. It abstracts away much of the complexity of working directly with Kubernetes, making it accessible to a wider range of users.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are not a simplified multi tenancy functionality.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Rancher helped us to improve our kubernetes environments in usability and functionality
