CheckMK - powerful monster

What do you like best about the product?
The way how fast you can monitor a network is incredible. The tool's speed in detecting abnormal behavior in the customer's network is a never-seen story before. You have some work setting things up, but once done, this is the most powerful tool we've ever used.
What do you dislike about the product?
The learning curve is more extensive than some other tools. Of course, the more you can do with it, the more you have to learn.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are monitoring things like:
- Servers
- Network devices (AP's / switches/routers/printers /..)
- Websites
- ...
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It would help if you gave it a try with the free version. The tech team is constructive, and the consultants are experts.

Monitor 5000 hosts with it in a very performant way

What do you like best about the product?
updates are very easy to implement, intitive GUI, performance is very good, rule-based parameterisation is top
What do you dislike about the product?
In the past the documentation was poor, but over the years it is advancinging. Today some parts are very well documented (even instruction videos) , other things poor.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Before we used nagios. Because of lack of time, we only used basic functionality : the most of all the hosts was only pinged.
Monitor more was perfectly possible but very time consuming to achieve.
By using CMK, on unix and windows hosts a lot of checks are automatically monitorred.

Before, we had a awful lot of scripts that send messages to people when a problem occured.
By changing such a script to a local check which does not send emails but send its results to Check_MK, you have one central point where you can see what is checked, who was notified when, escalate problems to other notification manners like slack, sms.
Network devices are monitorred by using snmp and this gives you.

We try to monitor as much as devices possible, not to get notifications from every device but to have a central point where you can see the impact of e.g. a network problem.

What do you like best about the product?
Within our Smart Cities projects, we work with multiple components such as City Platforms, Databases, Servers, etc. All these resources can be easily monitored with Check-mk, indicating system failures to act quickly. It is based on Nagios, being even more powerful. Lets you customize notifications.
What do you dislike about the product?
Perhaps there are more powerful alternatives with payment tools, but within free and open software, which is an essential requirement in many of our projects, Check-mk is a very powerful tool.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Check-mk allows us to have all our resources monitored without having to check it manually. This brings peace of mind to our staff, as well as to the client who is fully informed of all incidents that may occur during the project.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Check-mk is a Nagios-based software, so it has its power and also some additions. Our recommendation is to try it out, as it is open source and to pilot test it. Its use in production is impeccable.

A good monitoring system with some challenges

  • March 08, 2019
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
check_mk is a very intuitive, easy to use and easy to setup monitoring system. It scales perfect vertically and also horizontal. it provides already a huge amount of monitoring functionalities for a lot of environments and it is quite simple extensible with own functionalities. Beside state based monitoring it has also a complete solution to integrate event based monitoring. With the Business Intelligence we are able to picture our mission critical processes in monitoring and able to simulate the impact of outages to the business.
What do you dislike about the product?
The maturity of the software is not at the expected level and an update to next version is a pain. New major functions are added without listening to the customers which ends in complex handling.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We deliver in a sequenced order in short interval parts to our customers (JIT/JIS). The IT systems are crucial in the supply chain. With check_mk we are able to alert an issue with this IT systems before it becomes a problem for the delivery process. check_mk is used in a highly distributed way at over 300 sites with one central configuration platform which allow us to quickly implement new monitoring solutions and standards. We also use checkmk to monitor our systems in our central datacenter and in cloud. With help of that we detect problems with our infrastructure but also monitor if applications work as intended (functional monitoring).
With a monitoring system like checkmk we are proactive informed about issue and gain time to troubleshot and fix before our internal or external customer inform us about a mailfunction system.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
check_mk is a must have for monitoring of IT. Try it out you will have a quick success.

Perfect monitoring for heterogenous IT environments

  • February 25, 2019
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The best thing about check_mk is its ability to monitor all sorts of operating systems, appliances and applications in one central place. Combined with custom checks and performance data we are using it for monitoring as well as capacity management. The compatability to nagios and it's huge plugin repository made migration from classical nagios to check_mk very easy. We have been using check_mk for 5 years and are not planning to change that in the future.
What do you dislike about the product?
The menu structure is unintuitive in some cases and the Web API does not make use of HTTP response codes (You get a 200 even if the call fails). The Agent output is not encrypted by default.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Monitoring complex heterogeneous IT environments and capacit management.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are still using Nagios it is time for a change.

What do you like best about the product?
Check_MK gives us all we need to monitor our server landscape. It's very stable and we did not notice major problems. It comes with a lot of useful graphs displaying current and historical data. It provides a business intelligence like feature, notofications, an event console and much more
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes one might lose overview as the menus are quite "crowded"
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Fast detection of problems in the server landscape
