Good scaling monitoring solution, easy to configure and administrate
What do you like best about the product?
Check_MK is easy to configure but also really flexible for all kinds of special requirements. Be it notification through SMS, special hardware for which you can easily write new checks or simply generating various views to analyse problems. The developers really know what they are doing and providing quick and helpful support.
What do you dislike about the product?
The new design of their website is just plain generic. Yet another copy & paste HTML5 site, which is in my opinion a big step back compared to the old unique design.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are using Check_MK to monitor networks of a multitude of customers and can get valuable information out of it, which otherwise would be really time consuming.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Just try it! It's really easy to setup and test. The RAW edition is open source, so if you have a little spare time available just test it.

Check_MK in just a few minutes after being installed will provide you with deep insight and visibility into your systems and applications. Auto-discovery of services is a time saving feature that gets you up and running very quickly.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing to dislike really. The product delivers on its promise and is a focused IT monitoring product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Visibility into our systems and applications: specifically we are able to budget accordingly for new hardware since we know precisely the patterns of usage. The benefits are far reaching as we have reduced costs and gained efficiencies with our systems and applications that previously were not possible. Just by looking at the trends you can get a glance of the direction you are heading in and this is valuable information when doing any kind of capacity planning.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Check_MK is a pragmatic product for IT monitoring (systems and applications). It is quick to set-up, configure and requires little overhead in operating/maintenance. If you need relevant information from your systems and network such as capacity planning, trending/historical information as well as fault-management, then definitely give Check_mk a try.

Fast integration and high quality overview of the IT with CHeck_MK
What do you like best about the product?
- High amount of standard checks and the possibility to group them for the different requirements (Helpdesk, Application Teams, Management Views) allows a fast first time integration in new IT environments with a great level finetuning in a second step.
- We use the Availability and Performance SLA reporting.
- Granular rule based configuration and user roles let us adapt currently every aspect. We use both manual and API based configuration and information extraction to other tools.
- The upgrade and patching procedures are very comfortable and seamless for the production. The automatic agent distribution is saving much time and avoids using further tools like external packaging.

What do you dislike about the product?
- The graphical views for the management reporting and customer dashboards could be bit more "fancy" (for the technical reporting there are no complaints).
- When a discovery of the components of system is running there is no progress bar (only on discovery of environments) and system looks like it is get stuck.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- Good Reporting to provide SLA reports for performance and availability
- Direct integration into the IT Service Management System (ServiceNow) allows fast assignment of engineering resources to problems.

Recommendations to others considering the product:
As the product has check based licensing you should think about which checks are really required for the tasks to fulfill.
A very agile monitoring solution
What do you like best about the product?
The whole Check_MK environment has a very mature, stable foundation of supported checks and performance counters. Yet it grows almost on a daily basis. Support for new systems is being implemented very often and if you are willing to request it yourself, you can have it included in the core distribution in very little time. This agility really has no match among the larger competitors.
What do you dislike about the product?
The Web-GUI could use a facelift, but this is already in the pipeline for the next version as I hear.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Fully automated monitoring, alerting and performance-management for > 5000 server/network systems. It was easily integrated in the existing infrastructure (cmdb, user-authentication, alerting-infrastructure).

What do you dislike about the product?
To cut a long story short: to my and all of my customers opinions there is nothing to criticise.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- component based state monitoring:
-- all kind of servers (real, virtual; Windows, Linux, AIX, Solaris, ESX, AS400...)
-- all kind of network devices and appliances
-- full stack
- component based event monitoring
- monitoring of business processes by using the Check_MK business intelligence
- alarming via e-mails, ticketing tools, umbrella managers, SMS etc.

Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are unsure start with the free Community Edition of Check_MK and use it for a while. Later switch to the Enterprise Edition. You may as well call Mathias Kettner GmbH or a partner for a customised in-house training and after five days you are well trained and your monitoring infrastructure is set up and ready for usage.
Fantastic experience
What do you like best about the product?
My favorite part of the software is the automatic discovery. This allows us to add hundreds of servers at a time without having to manage each of them separately.
What do you dislike about the product?
The UI could use an update but I hear this will be in one of the next major updates.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We've discovered network and hardware issues that we didn't know we had, purely because auto discovery found a service we didn't think to add with our old monitoring software.
A complete IT systems monitoring suite
What do you like best about the product?
The automatic service discovery (agent and SNMP based) detects nearly all necessary checks for a host.
The web GUI makes it easy to use and the API provides automation, but still text config files are there and no database is required. Convenient for users of all experience levels.
More than 1700 builtin checks varying from basic system information to hardware vendor specific items like fans, power supplies and environment sensors.
A framework that is easily extended with plugins for the check engine and web GUI written in Python.
Customized views, dashboards, graphs, bookmarks, reports show the information that is needed.
Distributed monitoring makes it easy to monitor across the whole world or just two data centers.

What do you dislike about the product?
There is realy not much I do not like about Check_MK
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Check_MK is a fast and easy to setup monitoring solution for small, medium and large businesses. It can scale up to 100.000s of service checks.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Start with the raw edition where already more than 1700 checks are available. Switch to the enterprise edition for more features.
A monitoring underdog
What do you like best about the product?
Check_MK has done a really amazing job at making the information you need easily accessible and with good readability. As we have used many monitoring systems over the years, both before check_mk and after, we always value the ability to access information and understand what we are seeing. Many monitoring system that focus on the visualization of data seem to over do it and while it may be fancy it is still complicated. In the reverse of that several just don't have good simplistic visualization of date and that makes it hard to narrow down and find out what is going on.
What do you dislike about the product?
the event console that gathers snmp traps and email alarming from systems is a bit segregated from the main screens and can take time to make rules and get it all tuned and integrated into the main part of the polling based system.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The ability to quickly narrow down which host is causing the root issue by utilizing the parent relationship has allowed us to spend less time tracking that down. Also using the host and service event history allows us to provide exact outage time frames to our upper management as well as to other companies as we troubleshoot issue. Being able to store performance data for long periods of time and monitor several thousand services all while maintaining stellar performance is key. All and all this system has out performed and simplified monitoring for our company far greater than any other system we have used.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Once you learn how the "host tags" and the "host and service parameters" configuration interact then things will really start to click. Just dive in and really start adding host and spend some time in it.
