Improved fraud detection and customer analytics have guided faster, data-driven decisions

  • February 15, 2026
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

My main use case for IBM Cognos is building report authoring, scheduling, and bursting to multiple recipients with parameterized outputs. IBM Cognos has a use case around risk and fraud analytics, especially being a bank, where we need to check and measure against different kinds of frauds that should not exceed certain thresholds. Additionally, I utilize it for customer and product analytics regarding profitability dashboards and real-time dashboards to analyze how our customers interact with newly released features and marketing offers.

A specific example of how I use IBM Cognos for risk and fraud analytics is in the financial services sector, where recently there has been a rise in frauds and scams. Our customers often receive calls from fraudulent individuals asking for their one-time passwords or passwords, particularly targeting older folks who are not tech-savvy, leading to the draining of their retirement and pension savings. There have also been e-commerce-oriented frauds lately, and we have a dedicated team on fraud analytics that uses IBM Cognos to tackle these issues.

What is most valuable?

IBM Cognos helps audit database records for user activity and report runs while tracking how certain fields change over time. It allows me to monitor specific types of fraud to determine if the incidence percentage has increased recently or if new fraud types are emerging in specific geographic areas. These audits and oversight functionalities are extremely useful for us.

IBM Cognos offers very high security for sensitive customer data, including features like query vaults and dynamic RLS. It provides several macros and security filters for governance purposes, which are beneficial. Additionally, it facilitates the distribution of generated reports across wider forums within the company, not just limited to a specific business unit or team. The flexibility to be hosted as either a SaaS setup, an on-premise setup, or on cloud platforms like AWS or Azure is another unique capability of the product.

IBM Cognos's security features, including query walls and dynamic RLS, help my team by preventing exposure of our queries to hackers and malicious parties. Our dedicated cybersecurity team ensures that sensitive data does not become public, making it crucial that data stored in IBM Cognos remains secure throughout the entire data cycle, which is where these enterprise-grade security measures prove invaluable.

IBM Cognos offers very responsive and highly interactive dashboards, allowing effective reporting capabilities. The Excel packs generated can be drilled through and filtered efficiently, reducing the need for deeper Excel expertise. Data aggregation and segregation are effectively managed through IBM Cognos.

The positive impact of IBM Cognos on my organization is notable; previously, the reports we were using did not meet the expectations of our managers and heads of departments, often leading to criticism. Now, we experience far fewer complaints from management, who are generally satisfied with the details of both high-level summaries and technical breakdowns when needed, enhancing our management efficiency.

Management efficiency has improved significantly as decision-making has become much faster. Management now has clarity in deciding which products to continue, which to scrap, or where to invest more resources, with enhanced visibility facilitating these decisions.

What needs improvement?

IBM Cognos could improve by introducing different role types, such as viewer roles, user roles, and admin roles, along with assigning minor modules to specific individuals. Additionally, hybrid deployments, bursting workloads, and licensing guidelines are areas that could be better refined in their cloud version. Furthermore, considering the trend towards AI in many recent software solutions, an AI assistant that aids in accomplishing tasks could be a valuable addition.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using IBM Cognos for three years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

IBM Cognos is very stable overall.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of IBM Cognos is satisfactory. Around 30 people in my team are using it, but I do not have more detailed data on scalability metrics.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used Microsoft Power BI as part of the Microsoft suite before migrating to IBM Cognos.

What was our ROI?

While there were not any tangible savings, the streamlined decision-making process for management was a significant positive impact. Management can now drill down and view executive summaries for new products and fraud analytics quickly, resulting in less red tape during the decision-making process.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I believe the pricing structure I recall was around $11 per user per month for the standard cloud version of IBM Cognos. However, our central team negotiated a different price because multiple teams within our organization use IBM Cognos, bringing the price down to around $10 to $11 per user per month.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing IBM Cognos, we evaluated Tableau, but its higher pricing structure led to its consideration being dropped.

What other advice do I have?

My advice for others considering IBM Cognos is to weigh their specific organizational needs against available tools such as Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, and Qlik Sense. If there are more complex or organization-specific requirements, switching to IBM Cognos can be beneficial. I rate this product an 8 out of 10.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Private Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Data insights have transformed reporting speed and support faster, informed decisions

  • February 10, 2026
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

My main use case for IBM Cognos is that this software has great benefits, especially for the BI and data mining aspects, all focused on the decision-making aspect within our organization.

In my organization, we use IBM Cognos Analytics for decision-making, particularly for data reporting, tracking personnel, supply chain, timeline, and many more.

How has it helped my organization?

IBM Cognos Analytics has positively impacted my organization by reducing report formulation time by 60%, especially for templated recurring reports such as the monthly sales report. The improved decision-making speed has been enhanced with IBM Cognos self-service dashboard and AI-driven data exploration, while automated distribution and uptime, scheduled report delivery, and bursting have eliminated various manual emailing and delays.

The improved decision-making speed allows us to know if our business is doing well and how our customers are relating to our products. This enables us to determine which products are moving better and which are not performing as well, allowing us to focus more energy and resources on improving the products for better market value.

What is most valuable?

IBM Cognos makes it simple to create visually appealing products, and we are able to run about 1,000 reports on a daily basis while another 1,000 are run through the scheduler built into IBM Cognos Analytics. It offers triggering through the scheduler, which we use to confirm the completion of other processes needed to be available before the job is scheduled to run, allowing us to make data-driven decisions easily.

Some of the best features that IBM Cognos offers are enterprise reporting, which enables us to create, customize, and run reports on sales trends, consumer sentiment, and many more; dashboard creation; and data exploration and analysis. We are able to use the drag and drop feature to create ad-hoc visualizations. Additionally, I find the AI-powered natural language query feature for data analysis and dashboard input to be very useful for a non-technical person to put queries around the spreadsheets data to get a quick answer. Building insights for accurate decision-making has been great. Moreover, we can package reports with data-backed insights for stakeholders in PDF and Excel format to support business ad-hoc cases, forecasting, and strategic recommendations on relevant tasks.

Of all those features, the visual graphs, predictive analytics, and data cleansing feature makes the biggest difference for my team.

IBM Cognos is deployed in my organization using a hybrid cloud setup with Amazon Web Services as our cloud provider.

What needs improvement?

I believe IBM Cognos can be improved by addressing its limited real-time data connectivity, as well as enhancing the endpoint experience and mobility, which currently is not satisfactory due to limited data blending.

Although IBM Cognos supports mobile functionality, the experience can be improved, as the app is not fully responsive or fluid. Features such as interactive filtering and dashboard creation are not user-friendly on a small screen. It would be beneficial if the mobile user experience were improved with better touch-friendly controls and offline viewing options.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using IBM Cognos for the past 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

In my experience, IBM Cognos is stable, as I have not experienced any downtime or lagging issues.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

IBM Cognos can handle my organization's growth and increasing data needs efficiently.

How are customer service and support?

The customer support has been proactive, solution-oriented, and helpful whenever I have needed to reach out.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I previously used Microsoft Power BI before switching to IBM Cognos.

I switched from Microsoft Power BI to IBM Cognos primarily because IBM Cognos Analytics is robust in terms of reporting, governance, and scheduling, while Power BI excels in use, interactivity, and visuals. IBM Cognos Analytics has an edge over Power BI for enterprise-grade structured reporting needs, which is why we made the switch.

What was our ROI?

I have seen a return on investment through improved decision making, as automated distribution and uptime, along with scheduled report delivery and bursting, have eliminated various manual emailing and delays, thereby saving time and cost.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing is positive, as the price is relatively competitive and affordable. Although there may be some complexity during setup, the support is always available to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing IBM Cognos, I evaluated other options, including SAP Business Objects Business Intelligence.

What other advice do I have?

IBM Cognos is well suited for financial reporting, handling complex, pixel-perfect, multi-page reports with scheduled delivery to stakeholders, such as sales reports by region on a quarterly basis. It can operationally create dashboards across departments and combine multiple data sources such as ERP, CRM, Excel, and many more, with filters and embedded AI insights to enable organizations to make data-driven decisions easily.

I appreciate IBM Cognos for its inbuilt AI feature, which helps uncover data patterns and forecasts, providing useful quick data-supported recommendations without heavy analysis. I would rate this product a 9 out of 10.

Reporting workflows have become faster and data-driven decisions are made confidently

  • January 31, 2026
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

My main use case for IBM Cognos is to support metrics reporting, dashboarding, and general end-user reporting requirements, and my team and I usually receive many ad-hoc requests for statistics and metrics from executive leadership. I use IBM Cognos Analytics to deliver that reporting in a quick, efficient, and trusted manner.

In addition to my main use case, I use IBM Cognos day-to-day for reports where multiple reports are run on a daily basis as well as run through the scheduler built into IBM Cognos Analytics. It offers triggering through the scheduler which we use to confirm the completion of other processes completing the data collection needed to be available before the job is scheduled to run.

What is most valuable?

The AI-powered insights help me automatically identify patterns and insights where they enhance analysis depth effortlessly, and this feature has been very instrumental in uncovering variable insights that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. When it comes to seamless data integration, I love the seamless and efficient data integration capability of IBM Cognos Analytics, where it allows us easy merging of data from various sources such as customer feedback and sales figures. The smooth integration process streamlines workflow efficiency and enhances overall data management practice. I also really love the user-friendly and intuitive dashboards where IBM Cognos Analytics enables quick creation of custom dashboards and an easy understanding of visual data presentation, allowing us to identify trends at a glance and enhance our analytical capabilities.

IBM Cognos has positively impacted my organization since implementing this tool, as it has been very helpful with a particularly strong data analysis capability that helps us in business planning. Its strong data analysis capability helps us for business planning, and the great reporting capacity helps update all the leadership management about the business in one report. Auto-scheduling and report generation is a good feature that saves a significant amount of time.

Specific outcomes that show how IBM Cognos has helped my organization include saving time, as we have been able to save forty to fifty percent of our time with its auto-scheduling and report generation functionality.

What needs improvement?

One area where IBM Cognos can be improved is that customer service sometimes is not very responsive, and I would love to see the user interface improved, especially to look somehow updated.

In addition to this, I notice that the LDAP logins give errors multiple times, although not always, and integration with Azure login makes trouble.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using IBM Cognos for nine years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

IBM Cognos is very stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability of IBM Cognos is very good, as it has continued growing with my organization's needs, allowing us to analyze and store a significant amount of data and handle our organization's growth efficiently.

How are customer service and support?

The customer support sometimes is not quick to respond to our queries, so I would love them to be proactive and responsive twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Previously, I used Microsoft Power BI.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was quite straightforward, with no challenges or hiccups.

What was our ROI?

I have seen a return on investment, as I mentioned earlier about time saving and productivity gains, with a consistent governed data model that reduces the risk of errors. Reporting ensures store managers and regional leaders and executives each receive tailored reports automatically where they are able to make data-driven decisions easily.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

Before choosing IBM Cognos, I evaluated Sigma Computing among other options.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to others looking into using IBM Cognos is that it is way easier and more convenient for data visualization and integration, and the dashboard sharing function has improved our collaboration with my colleagues and my team members. I would definitely recommend IBM Cognos for its practical features and ease of use.

I have additional thoughts about IBM Cognos before we wrap up, as its speed simplifies my everyday work through data analysis and reporting, enabling me to make data-driven decisions easily. I give this product a rating of eight out of ten.

A Business Beast That Delivers Inspirations.

  • January 14, 2026
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Dramatic force in a shell of heritage. It lacks the bling of newer BI products, but where size matters and large quantities of data are required to be processed, it is a beast. Stable, heavy, and industrial grade, although, at times, it seems heavier than it needs to be. The pixel-perfect and governance is unparalleled. Bursting is supported with row-level security to thousands of users and is better addressed here than anywhere. It also honors data hierarchy, which is not negotiable to us.
What do you dislike about the product?
The mobile experience is poor. Responsive dashboarding has too much manual tweaking to be attractive on tablets relative to indigenous mobile BI applications. The desktop-to-mobile translation is seldom a 1:1 translation without meddling.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Four regions consolidated quarterly sales forecasting. The capability of the ability to create disparate data sources into one trusted module enabled us to determine a 15% difference in product categorizing that the missing capability of Excel had hidden over the years.

Centralized reporting has supported university-wide regulatory dashboards and secure data access

  • December 19, 2025
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

IBM Cognos is primarily used for business intelligence and reporting within our organization.

I am uncertain whether our organization uses AWS as a cloud provider, but we do subscribe to some SaaS applications, though I do not know where they are hosted.

IBM Cognos is used in the education industry.

What is most valuable?

From my experience, we use regular dashboarding with IBM Cognos for producing scheduled reports and for mandatory regulatory reporting. All our departments use IBM Cognos, with each department developing their own reports while our corporate IT team provides the data.

Some people use the interactive dashboards feature of IBM Cognos, and there are also other tools in use. I think some users utilize Power BI and Tableau, but our IT organization only provides IBM Cognos as an enterprise business intelligence and reporting tool. IBM Cognos is evaluated and complies fully with all our security standards.

In my opinion, IBM Cognos is very stable. It has been around for many years and many users are familiar with it, ensuring it performs well in its intended capacity. The benefits of choosing IBM Cognos, aside from cost savings, include having institutional knowledge for maintaining this infrastructure and a reliable solution that enhances developer productivity, given our team's extensive experience with IBM Cognos.

What needs improvement?

We are generally satisfied, but I am not certain if IBM Cognos meets every feature request from users since we only provide IBM Cognos as our standard and do not maintain infrastructure for other tools.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using IBM Cognos for less than a year.

How are customer service and support?

I find IBM's support and customer service to be responsive, particularly as we have been an IBM Cognos shop for a long time. Our systems team, operating on a lot of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and maintaining long-term relations with IBM, benefits from good support coverage.

How would you rate customer service and support?

Positive

How was the initial setup?

While I am not directly involved in the setup, I know that DataStage is not difficult to set up. However, our infrastructure team faced many challenges setting up the Cloud Pak cluster on-premises, including the initial establishment of an OpenShift cluster and deploying Cloud Pak for Data on top of that solution.

What about the implementation team?

The actual report development is done by other people, while our infrastructure team provides the hardware and our system engineering team manages the installation and application maintenance for IBM Cognos.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I do not know the main differences between IBM Cognos and other business intelligence tools such as Tableau, since many users come from different teams with prior experience using various tools. Whatever tools they are familiar with likely influences their reporting solutions. While I do not track the specifics of other user tools, those who have the budget may subscribe to different solutions.

What other advice do I have?

I do not use Dell PowerStore or Dremio. I work for a university setting with a very simple infrastructure, so we only use IBM Cognos and IBM DataStage.

I am very new to the organization with less than a year of experience, but IBM Cognos has been used here for more than 16 or 17 years.

I work in the higher education space at Boston College with approximately 9,000 to 10,000 students total.

I do not develop reports for IBM Cognos. We only host IBM Cognos infrastructure for our different user groups.

My responsibility involves working with different IT teams who maintain systems across the university. I connect to them using IBM DataStage to perform ETL activities and load data into an Oracle database, from which I provide access through IBM Cognos. My team maintains the infrastructure for both DataStage and IBM Cognos.

Regarding integration, I use IBM DataStage.

We use IBM DataStage on Cloud Pak and migrated from InfoSphere DataStage. The Cloud Pak version is also installed on-premises in our own data center. The modern OpenShift cluster-based platform is what we refer to as Cloud Pak.

The installation of Cloud Pak for DataStage happened almost two years ago, while IBM Cognos has always been in place.

I believe we are currently using version 11.2.4.

Referencing the machine learning capabilities of IBM Cognos is not my expertise. I do not have information about the pricing for IBM Cognos since that is managed by a different team which handles procurement.

We only provide support for IBM DataStage and IBM Cognos.

I would rate this review 9 out of 10.
