Cognos - Bringing Analytics to LIfe

What do you like best about the product?
The new Cognos Analytics has many new features that make it a true competitor in the analytics market. These new features have given our business the leverage to push new releases and bring a fresh face to our analytic reporting.
What do you dislike about the product?
Cognos tuning! I dislike that I have to pay for a tool, and then purchase service hours to tune it. In today's age of AI and ML, we should be able to run an agent that monitors the environment and then makes tuning recommendations. This would be a true game changer for IBM Cognos Analytics.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have been doing the what/why reporting for sometime. We have also been an IBM DSX customer for nearly two years. We are excited by the future integrations of Watson into Cognos and we have found reporting to be much easier than it used to be. Especially for new people!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try the trial and digitial learning offerings. You will quickly see that Cognos is a true Enterprise tool, not just a pretty visualization tool like other solutions.

What do you like best about the product?
Easy to buy, easy to deploy, with all the power of Cognos. The new interface with a cloud deployment option is a game changer for my clients.
What do you dislike about the product?
It took too long to get this version of the product released. IBM please put more money into the IBM analytics development team.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Pixel perfect reporting, report distribution, end user report creation and query, all in a modern web interface. Goodbye Tableau!

What do you like best about the product?
Ease of use. The interface has been improved to make it easier for non-IT reporters to quickly build reports. The customization and explandability of the platform and GUI tools to expland capabilities out of the box.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is almost too easy and end users quickly think they are experts without actually learning the tool.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Cognos for business unit reporting. We have trained SMEs to build dashboards and business level reports that have severly cut the daily and monthly reporting processes.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Strong self service reporting platform. Take the time to setup proper procedures and standards before rolling it out to business users for self-reporting tasks.

What do you like best about the product?
Full interactive reports that were introduced with Cognos Analytics 11. They give more control to users in analyzing/filtering their report data.
What do you dislike about the product?
The fact that portal pages were removed in CA11. They still work but there is no mechanism to modifying them or add more portal pages / portlets.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Providing business reports to a broad range
business users and business area content.

Cognos for Reconciliations

What do you like best about the product?
Cognos has been a huge help when it comes to reconciliation expenses between the two accounting code systems that I am required to use. Because my accounting systems do not feed into each other or utilize any of the same accounting codes. The reports I run in Cognos act as the middle-man for me to produce my reports.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike that Cognos has to update overnight and it seems to have processing errors often. When we need to make a correction to an account, I have to wait until the next day to pull accurate transaction histories. It would be extremely helpful if Cognos could be refreshed more often. (The time frame for which Cognos updates might be an entity IT decision and not an actual Cognos decision, but for now, this is what I dislike.)
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Account reconciliations that provide information for monthly board reporting and the annual financial report and audit. The report I utilize the most is the Transaction History Report.

What do you like best about the product?
Framework Manager models allow flexibility and control, Transformer OLAP is excellent and popular, reports are easy for users to assemble self-service, bursting and email is easy and popular
What do you dislike about the product?
Some features in one product or studio aren't in another, managing content can be a challenge but are easily augmented with Motio products
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Time savings and trust in data, users like drag and drop features without having to know data modeling

Refreshed Cognos experience for Analytical users

What do you like best about the product?
Refreshed interface, Dashboard interface, improved visualizations, ease of use for non technical users.
Frequent releases for fixes and enhancements.
Ease of applying the releases.
What do you dislike about the product?
Old Admin Console (within Cognos connection), Configuration dialog is out of date. The interface is sluggish at times and struggles to load content when the count is more than 20. For example: If a particular folder has 50 reports, it takes a while to load the content vs a folder with 5 reports. Mobile is app is very unfriendly on ipads thereby making users rely on native browsers such as ipad which deters users from using Cognos on Mobile devices.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Dashboards are very easy to compile when compared to earlier versions of Cognos (10.x and 8.x). User adaptability and user training is much easier due to friendly interface. The improved analytical capabilities have improved the business perception towards Cognos as a reporting tool.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Cognos has greatly evolved in the past 2-3 years and is on the path to modernize the Analytical reporting. Greatly recommended if looking for the next age BI solutions.
