Vast Network Visibility, Steep Learning Curve
What do you like best about the product?
I use Tanium to gain visibility and control over every device. I’m no longer blind to what happens across the network and infrastructure. I like how it works as a command center for all my infrastructure.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's overall great, but the learning curve can be steep. Also, if CPU usage could be optimized, that would be helpful. The initial setup wasn't very easy, though it was worth it.

Endpoint patching has improved consistency but still needs broader platform coverage

What is most valuable?
There are downsides and drawbacks in Tanium, and there is room for improvement from my perspective. Covering more types of platforms would be beneficial. Currently, Tanium has good support on most present platforms such as Windows and Linux, but we also have some niche platforms such as Power Platform, and I think that would be more interesting.

I have been using Tanium for about two years.

What is our primary use case?
Currently, we have around six Fortinet boxes in three locations, but nothing as a cloud service yet.
We are using Kaseya VSA. Kaseya is deployed in the cloud with Office 365. We also have Tanium from the corporate office, which is another tool that is part of Trend Micro.
We manage Tanium by looking at what is happening and report any anomalies to the head office.
Tanium is a mandate from our corporate office. We had to install it so that they can push their applications remotely. For example, we implemented Trend Micro, but nothing was done from our side. We had to install Tanium on the endpoints and then we got Trend Micro up and running on the endpoints through Tanium.
Once we install Tanium, we see that after a certain period of time, Trend Micro has been deployed without our intervention. It is a good tool for remote application deployment. However, Tanium itself has to be deployed manually.
We set a policy to block USB access. The moment a device is being set up on the network, I apply the policy, but it does not come into effect immediately. Sometimes it takes three or four days for it to reflect.
What is most valuable?
Tanium seems to be quite powerful, but we do not have the opportunity to explore its full potential because we are on a restricted access level from the corporate head office. However, with the limited access we have, we see that it is quite powerful in terms of acquiring data. It allows you to run queries from the interface.
Once you onboard Tanium, there is a lot to explore.
Tanium is quite powerful, but PDQ, when I used it, I preferred PDQ more than Tanium. That may be because I had full control, not the limited access that is given to us in Tanium right now.
What needs improvement?
The integration is not simple and easy. It requires experienced users or people who have done the implementation.
When certain policies are applied, they do not immediately push the policies. For example, we manage endpoint device USB access. We set a policy to block it, but it does not come into effect immediately. Sometimes it takes three or four days for it to reflect. That is a pain point.
I have raised this issue with support as well, but they said that I need to limit the number of devices in the policy.
In terms of application deployment, for us, it was seamless.

Almost two years now.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Tanium is stable and it is also lightweight. It is not heavy on the endpoint.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support is handled through the corporate support, so we are not directly dealing with Tanium's technical support. Nevertheless, I feel it may be good because it is vastly used on the Europe side.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We had to move with Fortinet because of the corporate mandate. We were using Forcepoint for more than a decade since they were Stonesoft, then they became Forcepoint. However, recently, last year, we had to change our solution to a Fortinet firewall.
Two years back we were acquired by another company. Until then, we had Forcepoint and everything all in-house. We had a say and used to go with the choice of solutions, but after the acquisition happened, we had to blend with the corporate policies. We cannot do anything independently.
How was the initial setup?
Tanium's corporate office did all the back-end policy setup, but we had to deploy the application in-house.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I did use PDQ in the past during the COVID times for remote deployment of applications. PDQ Deploy is one alternative solution.
What other advice do I have?
For Tanium, PDQ Deploy is one alternative to consider. My overall review rating for Tanium is eight out of ten.
Easy Patch Deployment Across Servers and Windows Laptops
What do you like best about the product?
I like how, relatively easily, we can deploy patches to our servers and Windows laptops.
What do you dislike about the product?
It very difficult to automate the patching. While it easier than doing evrything manually, it would be great if we could automate the patching so it's relatively zero touch.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Tanium solves the problem of patching our Windows laptops and servers. It also helps us to deploy one off software and create a self service for our users.
Single agent and multiple features with real time visibility.
What do you like best about the product?
It’s a user-friendly platform that provides detailed device data and real-time visibility into endpoints. Overall, it’s a very useful tool for vulnerability management and threat hunting.
What do you dislike about the product?
I can say the learning platform could be better, and there are some areas that need improvement on the Linux side. Otherwise I don't see anything to dislike

It provides a single platform for patch management, threat hunting, vulnerability management, inventory checks, and more. It also solves the problem of having multiple vendor agents installed on the endpoint, which can slow down performance.
Unified endpoint insights have improved patching and risk reduction across diverse environments
What is our primary use case?
Tanium is used for heterogeneous endpoint management in general. As a consultant, I work with different customers across multiple industries. Tanium could be useful in finance, education, federal, and I have worked with companies in education, distribution, logistics, manufacturing, and aerospace. Some of them do have Tanium in those situations.
What is most valuable?
Tanium’s best features include support for any Windows, Linux, or Mac endpoint, regardless of where it is, and the ability to do IT operations and security operations. That’s really the big benefit.
I assess Tanium’s real-time data aggregation capabilities for aiding risk identification or remediation as probably the best in the industry.
While Tanium doesn’t call it that, I utilize dashboards and reporting for analytics for endpoint performance insights.
Regarding the metrics that are most useful with Tanium’s detailed analytics, it depends on what your goal is and what problem you’re trying to solve or what you’re trying to address, because it does so much with both IT operations and security operations.
What needs improvement?
Tanium has top of the line integration. There are areas that could be improved with Tanium, in my opinion, with continuous improvements anywhere.

I have been using Tanium for five years.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Tanium is suitable for small and medium businesses at around 5,000 endpoints and under.
How are customer service and support?
I rate Tanium’s support as very good.
What other advice do I have?
I am still using Tanium within the last 12 months.
I do use the automated patch management with Tanium.
Patching with Tanium, if you’re doing regular patching manually or automated, is going to reduce vulnerability findings.
I think the pricing for Tanium is fair enough for small and medium businesses and enterprise. It's good for multiple kinds of use cases, but I would say it’s better for enterprise.
Overall, I would rate Tanium an eight on a scale of one to ten.
Impressive Flexibility and Comprehensive Endpoint Management

This is one of the best tools for endpoint management, offering all the essential features needed for effective asset management. Although I am new to using this tool, I am already very impressed by its flexibility, whether it comes to deploying software, managing patches, or handling assets.

The process for troubleshooting tool errors while working could be clearer, as this would make resolving issues easier. Other than that, I have no complaints.

I love how the Tanium Platform provides answers in seconds instead of hours, which allows me to build resources that are always current. What do you dislike about the product?
I find the learning curve of Tanium Platform to be quite steep. Despite its power and capability, the lack of clear onboarding resources can make the initial experience overwhelming. I often spend additional time navigating through menus to locate the data I need, which slows down my workflow. The platform provides a lot of raw visibility, but it doesn't necessarily translate into customer-friendly language. This means I have to invest extra effort to convert technical insights into ready-to-share guides, owing to its comprehensive nature. Additionally, Tanium can be resource-intensive, which isn't always suitable for environments with limited bandwidth or older hardware. While the platform is robust, learning to navigate it effectively takes time. Furthermore, although Tanium offers excellent technical visibility, transforming this into operational language for my team requires additional steps, which can slow down processes.

I use the Tanium Platform for instant visibility into endpoints, speeding up troubleshooting and ensuring real-time insights. It consolidates data into one view, removes guesswork, and helps scale solutions across the organization efficiently.

What is our primary use case?
I use Tanium for patching operating systems, upgrading applications, and watching and maintaining Windows endpoints.
How has it helped my organization?
Our patch rates have never been better. With Tanium, we see a big difference in patching efficacy.
What is most valuable?
The ability to run real-time queries is highly valuable. This allows us to get data back about our endpoints as soon as we need it instead of waiting for inventory check-ins.

I would love to see more new user training available on their site.

I love it. The insights we gain from our endpoints and the management capabilities that Tanium provides have been a boon to our operations and security. We feel much better since running Tanium and supporting other Tanium customers.
Adapting management tools to meet secure environments while leveraging strong dashboard capabilities
What is our primary use case?
We initially conducted a proof of concept with Tanium, but we ended up using Patch My PC on the Windows side and a plugin called Superman for Jamf on Mac devices. Our environment is highly restrictive with no administrative rights, which led to limitations with some solutions.
What is most valuable?
Tanium provides a comprehensive suite for managing devices, not just patching. The dashboard and backend services offered by Tanium are excellent. However, in our specific environment, we couldn't fully utilize these features due to security constraints.
What needs improvement?
Tanium required local admin or root rights on Mac devices, which did not comply with our security policies. This made the solution less suitable for our restrictive environment.

I tested Tanium in the first half of last year.
How are customer service and support?
I can't recall if we used Tanium's professional services. With Patch My PC, we worked with a third-party reseller who provided an engineer to help configure the service, which was very helpful.

Patch My PC was significantly cheaper compared to Tanium. Full suite solutions like Tanium have similar price ranges based on list prices, but real prices vary after negotiations.

We evaluated Tanium and some other full suite solutions that manage not just patching but also reboot management, application installation, and service management.
What other advice do I have?
Tanium is a very good product and I would rate it eight or nine out of ten. It's a great tool for central management and patch management for devices. I would definitely consider it for future use, provided we can address the root account issues.
