Deploys disaster recovery quickly and improves recovery speed while reducing testing time
What is our primary use case?
What is most valuable?
The features of HPE Zerto Software that I enjoy the most are the ease of setting up the protection groups and the ease of doing testing, such as failover tests.
The near-synchronous replication is crucial as we don't want any data loss, which is critical.
The quick setup of disaster recovery environments helps streamline our DR testing.
HPE Zerto Software has reduced both my RTOs and RPOs. Its recovery speed is much faster than other disaster recovery solutions and much easier to use. I can recover one of our tier zero SQL servers and have it up and running in under ten minutes. If I were using one of our backup products, that would take hours.
It has helped to reduce the time it takes for our organization's DR testing, reducing it by days. The big benefit is that I can set up that environment and people can test, but if something happened and we needed to redeploy that environment, it's very quick and easy. It has reduced the overall time for the DR testing, including the testing process to make sure the applications are working.
HPE Zerto Software, as far as the replication, had near-synchronous replication, which made our RPOs better. It was easier to use, easier to recover from, so it was far superior for that purpose. Prior to adopting HPE Zerto Software, we were using our backup system to test DR.
What needs improvement?
I don't have any recommendations regarding how HPE Zerto Software can be improved or what additional features should be included in the next release.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Zerto Software for a year and a half, about 18 months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I have experienced issues with downtime, crashes, and performance with HPE Zerto Software. When we first deployed it, we were replicating to AVS, and we've done DR tests where we've left that test environment running for a significant period and had issues with the amount of storage space it was using. Sometimes the VMs become unstable when they're running too long.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
HPE Zerto Software scales well with the growing needs of my organization because we haven't had any issues there.
How are customer service and support?
I would evaluate customer service and technical support for HPE Zerto Software as good. Any case I've opened, they've been very responsive. I would give them a ten out of ten. They're very responsive and knowledgeable. They've helped me with all my issues.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
I found the deployment to be easy.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with pricing, setup costs, and licensing for HPE Zerto Software was great. It was not overly expensive, and deployment was easy.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before selecting HPE Zerto Software, I considered Rubrik, which has orchestrated recovery plans, and we've tried using those. HPE Zerto Software was much easier to use.
What other advice do I have?
The solution has not helped to reduce downtime in any situations.
The advice I would give to other organizations considering HPE Zerto Software is to do it. If you need a good recovery product, HPE Zerto Software is fantastic.
I rate HPE Zerto Software a nine out of ten.
continuous data protection enables rapid recovery and reliable service
What is our primary use case?
We use HPE Zerto Software for disaster recovery, resiliency, and peace of mind.
How has it helped my organization?
It provides peace of mind, it allows us to feel confident knowing that the data protection platform is in-place and allows for rapid recovery in the event of data integrity failures, or platform disruptions.
What is most valuable?
The contextual help and simulation of HPE Zerto Software are the most valuable features. HPE Zerto Software's continuous data protection or CDP is critical for our organization because it allows us to recover within seconds to minutes, and the journal allows us to pick a point-in-time recovery. The journal allows us to recover from a point in time before an event occurred.
What needs improvement?
I cannot think of any ways HPE Zerto Software needs improvement, as I have used it at a previous company as well, and it is a reputably reliable platform.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Zerto Software for over several years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I have not experienced any downtime, crashes, or performance issues with HPE Zerto Software; it is a reliable platform and it is very well-engineered.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
HPE Zerto Software scales with the growing needs of our organization.
How are customer service and support?
HPE Zerto Software's customer service and technical support have been fantastic.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We used Veeam as our previous solution and we switched to HPE Zerto Software to ensure that we had a mutable backup, as well as synchronous replication.
How was the initial setup?
I don't perform setup and initial configuration, another team does that.
What was our ROI?
That amount of downtime would cost our organization in the millions.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I don't operate in this vein of the business.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Veeam, Rubrik, ASR.
What other advice do I have?
HPE Zerto Software's recovery speed is very fast and reliable compared to the disaster recovery solution we used before. I would rate HPE Zerto Software overall as a ten; it is a fantastic product.
Facilitates seamless disaster recovery simulations and rapid application migrations
What is our primary use case?
My main use cases for HPE Zerto Software involve active-passive application setups since I can't do an active-active; we do a standby and use Zerto to replicate that across to an alternate data center to practice as a DR.
I practice it to migrate to new IPs as needed and things like that. I haven't experienced any ransomware issues yet, so I haven't had to use HPE Zerto Software in a data recovery situation. It wasn't applicable for our exercises against the CrowdStrike failure that impacted the entire world, however, we recovered from that in different ways. The only time we've actually had to use this as a DR event was during practice; we haven't had to use it as active DR since we have active-active solutions that rely on global traffic managers.
The data is already in place; they just open up to see it in a different environment. So we haven't had to use it as DR, but in our DR practice, it has been working very effectively.
How has it helped my organization?
An example of how the replication feature has benefited my organization is when we were migrating from a legacy stack of hardware to a new stack using HPE Zerto Software. We were able to move hundreds of VMs at a time during a change window because the replication had already moved the data there; we just needed to cut over the active workload. It was as simple as turning it off, migrating, and turning it back on in a new space, which enabled us to run 200 plus applications in each change window during our migration from a 16-month deployment down to a three-month deployment.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable aspect of HPE Zerto Software is that it solves an impossible solution that VMware did not. We previously used a storage-based replication tool and coordinated with SRM for the cutover. That storage tool was no longer available when we started using VSAN. We no longer have a Fibre Channel system in the mix and were used to getting kind of DVR level, rolling it back to a millisecond to write-by-write level of recovery. VMware didn't have that available to us in vSphere replication, leaving us with a 10-minute choice while we needed sub-one minute. Zerto provides us with a seven-to-eight-second RTO and which allows us to meet the needs of our application teams with very sensitive applications.
The feature I appreciate the most about HPE Zerto Software is its fantastic replication and advanced problem-solving capabilities. We use it for both migration and DR.
It's easy to use; my POC took half a day to set up.
Zerto's near synchronous replication works very, very well.
What needs improvement?
I hesitate to offer improvements for HPE Zerto Software since I appreciate it so much; the user interface is good, and the actual data under the hood is good. It keeps working, it's fast.
However, it could benefit from tighter integration with VMware. They have a head start on proving that the new version will work. When cybersecurity events happen and we have a new release that we need to deploy quickly, they have a 90-day window to remediate that, but I need to deploy it before them, and I can't.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've been using HPE Zerto Software for about two years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I assess the stability and reliability of HPE Zerto Software as 100%.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
HPE Zerto Software has been able to scale with our growing needs, and I've been happy with how it's been scaling; it's been smooth. The scaling has been smooth and satisfactory.
How are customer service and support?
Customer support has always responded well when we have a problem, although that has gotten a little bit less since HPE purchased it. It was a bit better when it was Zerto before the acquisition; we get into the main queue more often now, but we can escalate very quickly.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Prior to adopting HPE Zerto Software, I used a combination solution with vSphere Replication and SRM alongside a Fibre Channel solution from EMC called the Virtual Replication Appliance. It had really good RTO, which we were trying to match with our new infrastructure, and the only solution we found to meet that need was HPE Zerto Software.
How was the initial setup?
I would describe my experience with the deployment of HPE Zerto Software as very smooth and very easy.
What was our ROI?
It's hard to say if I've seen a return on investment; we haven't had anything break yet, so quantifying a return on investment for insurance is quite difficult. We have a solution that's ready to play, and we hope we never have to use it, similar to buying insurance on a house—you don't want to find out if it truly has to pay.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The setup cost for HPE Zerto Software was very favorable, and pricing wasn't much of an issue since it was the only choice available.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before selecting HPE Zerto Software, the only other solution we considered was vSphere Replication with SRM; that was the only one that fit into our environment, and I don't care what its new name is since we're not using it.
What other advice do I have?
Having a solid solution like HPE Zerto Software means we can effectively solve our DR problem. We can't reduce our DR testing since all our vital apps do it twice a year, and the less vital ones do it once a year.
I am currently using a Cyber Vault solution or immutable data copies to ensure recovery from a cyber threat, integrated with the backup solution we have today, which is a Cohesity product they call Fort Knox. The approach for that is in the storage department's domain, and I leave them to do their own business.
The most important capabilities for me when choosing a Cyber Vault solution would again be continuity, even though this is outside my scope.
HPE Zerto Software hasn't yet reduced our downtime in any situation; we haven't had an event where it would be helpful. We've built in suspenders kind of things. We are managed service providers and use HPE Zerto Software on-prem with a private setup. We're not using any cloud providers for that; we have a cloud-at-customer solution.
Overall, I assess HPE Zerto Software as a product and would give it about a nine out of ten.
Ensures rapid data recovery and continuous protection for critical applications
What is our primary use case?
My main use cases for HPE Zerto Software include disaster recovery and data protection for our critical applications.
How has it helped my organization?
We built two data centers and needed to migrate our workload from one to the other and vice versa. We needed to do that with as little downtime as possible. We purchased migration licenses and it went so smoothly - with just seconds of downtime - that we decided to stick with them for DR.
By implementing HPE Zerto Software, my organization was trying to solve challenges relating to minimizing downtime and ensuring data integrity during unexpected outages. This solution has saved me time in data recovery situations due to ransomware and other causes, allowing for quick restoration of services.
Since implementing, we haven't had any failures, however, the testing features have provided great peace of mind.
What is most valuable?
The features of HPE Zerto Software that I appreciate the most include continuous data protection and the flexibility it provides for cloud integrations. I can provide examples of how the features have benefited my organization, such as significantly reducing our recovery time during incidents.
The built-in testing features are great. Everything is really easy to use.
The failover feature is great for getting VMs up and running at a secondary site.
The journaling feature allows us to go back five or ten seconds back in time. It's really helpful. We can just go back to that last snapshot and not lose anything.
It has helped to reduce downtime in situations, especially migration. It's providing us with a seamless recovery process. It has saved us countless hours of downtime, translating to significant cost savings. You don't want the end users knowing you are even doing anything, and we can achieve that.
HPE Zerto Software has positively impacted our RTOs and RPOs by improving our recovery objectives and ensuring data is always available. Other than migration, we haven't had the need for it.
The solution has helped with my organization's disaster recovery testing process. You can just click a button and do a test instead of doing anything in production.
What needs improvement?
I don't have any idea of areas fro improvement.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Zerto Software for approximately a year now.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I would assess the stability and reliability of HPE Zerto Software as excellent, as it performs consistently under different conditions. We rarely get alerts or notifications.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
HPE Zerto Software scales very efficiently with the growing needs of my organization, adapting easily as our data volume increases. I have expanded my usage of HPE Zerto Software to cover more applications and databases. That expansion has been incredibly smooth. We're looking to expand more.
How are customer service and support?
I haven't had to engage with technical support.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Prior to adopting HPE Zerto Software, I was using another solution.
How was the initial setup?
I would describe my experience deploying HPE Zerto Software as really easy; the process was straightforward. When we originally implemented it a year and a half ago, we still deployed on a Windows VM. Now, the have a VM appliance, and we're looking to migrate to that soon.
What was our ROI?
I have seen an ROI with HPE Zerto Software. The migration was huge. It saved us a lot of time.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with pricing, setup costs, and licensing has been satisfactory. The impression the software gave us is that it's easy to use. We're not a heavy user so we just bought a 25-pack.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before selecting HPE Zerto Software, I considered other solutions such as VMware and Commvault for our backup and recovery needs. What stood out in my evaluation process was HPE Zerto Software's simplicity and ease of use.
What other advice do I have?
My advice for other organizations considering HPE Zerto Software would be to thoroughly evaluate your needs and understand how its features can benefit your operations.
On a scale of one to ten, I would rate HPE Zerto Software a strong nine for its overall performance and service.
Improved recovery rates and seamless migration process boost operational efficiency
What is our primary use case?
HPE Zerto Software is basically used for site replication.
How has it helped my organization?
We needed increased uptime and resilience, and Zerto helped with that.
The features of HPE Zerto Software have benefited our organization by increasing our recovery rate on systems that have a tight recovery RPO, and it's also allowing us to migrate workloads from VMware to Hyper-V in a seamless fashion.
What is most valuable?
The replication aspect of HPE Zerto Software is what I appreciate the most, but we also appreciate the conversion feature. We're moving from VMware to Hyper-V.
It's easy to use. It's point-and-click and very logical.
The near-synchronous replication is very good. We have some applications that are single-site only that do have a really high RPO. With synchronous replication, if we do experience a fault, we can bring it up on the other side on our other data center and also have a point in time recovery.
We have saved time in a data recovery situation. We had misconfiguration and we were able to bring the system back up on our redundant data center in about ten minutes. It would have taken about five hours and lost about 24 hours of otherwise with tranditional recovery.
We've reduced downtime by about 24 hours. That would have cost several thousand to several hundred thousand dollars.
It's increased RPO and RTO recovery times due to synchronization rates that are selectable. It's impressive compared to other solutions such as traditional Avamar, TSM, or Commvault backups. Those take anywhere from five to ten hours to recover systems. Avamar is literally minutes.
What needs improvement?
I definitely would like to see the continuation of the migration capability to Hyper-V included in the next release of HPE Zerto Software, as well as adding migration capabilities to other hypervisors, such as Nutanix Acropolis.
For how long have I used the solution?
We've been using HPE Zerto Software for five years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I have not experienced any downtime, crashes, or performance issues with HPE Zerto Software.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
HPE Zerto Software scales with the growing needs of our organization.
How are customer service and support?
I evaluate customer service and technical support for HPE Zerto Software very highly; every question we've had has been answered promptly and first-time resolution is very high.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Prior to adopting HPE Zerto Software, we were using Veeam. We were looking at and actually using Veeam, and we were using Avamar before selecting HPE Zerto Software.
How was the initial setup?
My experience with deploying HPE Zerto Software is very straightforward and easy to deploy.
What about the implementation team?
We're using Commvault and Dell Cyber Vault as our solution approach.
What was our ROI?
I think we have seen a return on investment with HPE Zerto Software.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with pricing, setup costs, and licensing for HPE Zerto Software has been very positive.
What other advice do I have?
I've not had any complaints about HPE Zerto Software's functionality.
My advice to other organizations considering HPE Zerto Software is that it is definitely a far cheaper solution than using array-based replication, and it's one of the most stable software deployments that we've done that runs in a Windows environment.
On a scale of one to ten, I rate HPE Zerto Software a ten.
Journal replication is very fast, but timely support for critical issues is a challenge
What is our primary use case?
My main use case for HPE Zerto Software is BCDR.
How has it helped my organization?
By implementing this solution, we were trying to solve BCDR challenges and needed a vendor-agnostic solution.
What is most valuable?
The feature I appreciate most about HPE Zerto Software is its journal-based replication, which is a faster replication technology than what we had prior.
Overall, it has improved our RTO and RPO and reduced the engineering time spent during regularly scheduled DR exercises.
What needs improvement?
When failing over virtual machines (VMs), where VLANs aren't spanned across geographical data centers, it's essential to change the IP address of replicated VMs. The mechanism used to control and configure this process could be improved for customers with restrictions on DHCP usage.
Additionally, there are nuances to consider when dealing with Linux systems.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Zerto Software for three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
HPE Zerto Software has had some issues, such as storage problems and logs filling up, but they were resolved by support.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Our replicated workloads are mostly static. We have not needed to scale our implementation, yet.
How are customer service and support?
Their support team didn’t have all the answers, and some of the cases took far too long to address, especially on critical systems that needed to be operational before our scheduled DR events.
I would evaluate customer service and technical support of HPE Zerto Software as probably a five out of ten.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Neutral
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Before adopting HPE Zerto Software, we were using a vendor-specific technology. We considered the change to HPE Zerto Software due to performance and the need to use multiple hypervisors.
How was the initial setup?
Deploying HPE Zerto Software was pretty streamlined, but there have been some challenges with the support organization. There were instances where additional resources were needed to address cases, and the time to bring them on was longer than expected.
What was our ROI?
We were able to consolidate tools with HPE Zerto. That yielded a meaningful amount of cost savings for us.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with the pricing and licensing of HPE Zerto Software is that it was more affordable than our previously used technologies.
What other advice do I have?
My advice to another organization considering HPE Zerto Software is to get a good contact within the account team to ensure a quick path to escalation exists.
Potential customers should be aware that Zerto does not support all hypervisors in the market. So, depending on your footprint, Zerto may or may not be a fit for your long-term virtualization strategy.
I would rate HPE Zerto Software a seven out of ten.
Continuous data protection and rapid recovery improve disaster recovery processes significantly
What is our primary use case?
My main use cases for the HPE Zerto Software are VMware, to do DR to the cloud.
How has it helped my organization?
We wanted less time for recovery, which this solution provided.
Luckily, we haven't had a disaster yet, however, during our DR tests. It provides us with peace of mind.
What is most valuable?
The features of HPE Zerto Software that I appreciate the most are the continuous data protection and the ability to test.
The continuous replication has been very important to our company.
HPE Zerto Software has positively impacted my RTOs and RPOs. With the old software, we were talking a few hours to maybe a couple of days to recover a server, whereas with HPE Zerto Software, it's just a matter of minutes.
The solution has significantly helped to reduce my organization's DR testing. Our full DR test has been reduced to a couple of hours instead of a few days. The actual test in HPE Zerto Software itself is just a matter of six, seven hours.
My organization wanted near-real-time backup and recovery by implementing the HPE Zerto Software. A lot of that saved time has been allocated to value-add tasks; it's been great. We've been able to do other things.
What needs improvement?
The HPE Zerto Software can be improved with more visibility. It's really hard to find out what stores and what drives I'm using, and then to translate that over to the cloud solution.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using the HPE Zerto Software for about a year and a half now.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I assess the stability and reliability of HPE Zerto Software as excellent. We have not had any issues with the solution at all.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
HPE Zerto Software scales really with the growing needs of my organization. I've just moved to different clusters of VMs.
How are customer service and support?
I evaluate my customer service and technical support experience as great. On a scale from one being the worst to ten being the best, I would rate my customer service/technical support as a ten out of ten. They've been great.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Prior to adopting the HPE Zerto Software, I was using another solution to address similar needs, and it was mainly for performance. The RTO and RPO for our critical systems were just too long with the other solutions.
How was the initial setup?
I would describe my experience with deploying HPE Zerto Software as positive. The install went smoothly. I didn't really need support at all.
What was our ROI?
I have seen a return on investment with HPE Zerto Software.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with the pricing, setup cost, and licensing of the HPE Zerto Software was positive. We were one of the lucky ones who got it before the price hikes, so it was a pretty good price. It costs a lot more now.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before selecting HPE Zerto Software, I considered using Veeam. We're still using it for our backups, but for DR, it just wasn't cutting it.
What other advice do I have?
The capability that is most important when choosing my Cyber Vault solution is the ability to be completely air-gapped from your network. It would probably have taken a couple of hours to a few days for me to recover with a different solution that I have used. The solution has not helped me reduce downtime in any situation before I had HPE Zerto Software.
I am currently using a Cyber Vault solution or immutable data copies to ensure recovery from cyber threats.
My advice to another organization that's considering the HPE Zerto Software is to do it without a second thought.
On a scale of one to ten, I rate the HPE Zerto Software a nine.
Continuous backup capabilities and peace of mind through effective data protection against ransomware
What is our primary use case?
My main use cases for HPE Zerto Software are to replicate the VM machines to a disaster recovery center and for disaster recovery scenarios.
How has it helped my organization?
While I cannot provide a specific example where these features helped my organization since we haven't had a real recovery scenario, it provides peace of mind knowing our data is protected and we can always return to previous checkpoints.
What is most valuable?
The features of HPE Zerto Software that I value most are its continuous backup capabilities, its effectiveness against ransomware, and the ability to return to any checkpoint in the past. That is probably the best feature. My impressions of HPE Zerto Software's near-synchronous replication are that it provides numerous checkpoints with the ability to go back, which I think is the most important feature.
What needs improvement?
We encountered some issues with HPE Zerto Software.
The main concern involves the Delta Sync that triggers when changing the recovery direction. For large virtual machines of several terabytes, this process can take considerable time. As a bank, we are required by regulators to run regular DRC scenario testing for one week from the DRC site.
When changing replication, the Delta Sync takes approximately six hours for six terabyte virtual machines. During this time, the virtual machine is inaccessible. If another major issue arose requiring us to return to the PDC, we would have to wait six hours for the Delta Sync to complete, which would result in a test failure. This represents our biggest challenge.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Zerto Software for approximately one and a half years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Regarding the stability and reliability of HPE Zerto Software, there are occasional warnings and sometimes replication stops for various reasons. However, overall, it is stable and reliable. I would rate it eight points out of ten.
How are customer service and support?
The customer support for HPE Zerto Software is very good. I have opened several cases, and their responses were consistently quick. In most instances, we resolved the issue or they provided proper guidance on how to proceed.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Before implementing HPE Zerto Software, we used SRM, the VMware solution. We also considered building all machines in the DRC as alternatives. However, we abandoned this design as it would have created more complications, requiring the application team to release applications on both sides.
Our organization implemented HPE Zerto Software to address the challenge of maintaining a functional disaster recovery scenario. Prior to HPE Zerto Software, we used VMware, but due to VMware's license policy changes, we anticipated significantly higher costs for future license renewals.
How was the initial setup?
The solution's ease of use with HPE Zerto Software is exceptional. Compared to SRM, it is much more intuitive. The setup process took only a few hours to complete everything. The recovery process is also very straightforward, requiring just a few clicks.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Regarding pricing, setup costs, and licensing for HPE Zerto Software, I do not have information about the prices.
What other advice do I have?
We haven't experienced any real recovery scenarios yet, and our testing showed similar recovery times between SRM and HPE Zerto Software. I am currently not using a Cyber Vault solution.
Overall, I would rate HPE Zerto Software eight out of ten.
Ransomware protection strengthens with reliable backup replication and great technical support
What is our primary use case?
My main use case for HPE Zerto Software is ransomware protection, so basically, the entire environment is replicated.
How has it helped my organization?
It's helped protect us and give us recovery from ransomware. We're only allowed about an hour of downtime before we need to start making calls.
Zerto features of HPE Zerto Software benefit my organization by allowing it to be set and forget. Once it's operational, I just check it every once in a while to make sure it's still working. If I make a new machine, I add it to the group to get replicated and that's it. It requires very little maintenance.
What is most valuable?
What I appreciate the most about HPE Zerto Software is that it works.
I'd rate the ease of use four out of five. It's fairly easy to use.
The near-sychronous replication is good, even though we don't need that fast of a replication. If I have an application crash, I can step back a week and get back what I need.
Zerto positively impacted our RTOs and RPOS. Before Zerto, it would take us four days to recover. Now, we're looking at a couple of hours. Compared to other solutions, like Veeam, the biggest difference is that, though it is very simple, it doesn't have in-built security.
We haven't DR tested it yet. I'll bring up machines, however, this is a completely different solution than what we had. We build a complete Vault around Zerto. We made our own Cyber Vault. The most important capability for that is the air gap.
What needs improvement?
HPE Zerto Software can be improved by allowing a system inside my makeshift vault to reach out to the other system and pull backups inside, which would let me punch fewer holes.
Currently, my understanding is you have to have two systems that are interconnected. Based on how I've built it, if I could have a system inside my makeshift vault reach out to the other system, that would be more secure.
Right now, both systems have to talk to work. We've completely rebuilt our infrastructure inside, including firewalls and everything, inside a basic vault. It has the same concept. For that system to replicate, we have to have holes in the firewall for the outside system to reach in to connect to the HPE Zerto Software inside.
A lot of the wording isn't very clear. If you don't know what you're looking at, it just oesn't make sense when you are setting it up.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Zerto Software for three months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
My assessment of the stability and reliability of HPE Zerto Software is that I haven't had any issues yet.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
HPE Zerto Software scales with the growing needs of my organization in that it's all about the licenses. I have not yet expanded usage of HPE Zerto Software, however, that is actually in my budget for next year.
How are customer service and support?
I would evaluate customer service and technical support for HPE Zerto Software as awesome. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate the customer service and technical support for HPE Zerto Software as nine. The reason for my rating is that they've been very responsive. I think sometimes there's a little bit of a gap in communications, but usually, it's not too significant a deal.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Prior to adopting HPE Zerto Software, I was using another solution to address similar needs, which was StoreEver.
How was the initial setup?
The deployment model for HPE Zerto Software is that we have two data centers that are basically stacked as one in diverse locations. When we rebuilt and built the HPE Zerto Software system, we built it the same way. We have it stretched across two data centers, so we have high availability across two data centers times two, essentially.
What about the implementation team?
My experience with deploying HPE Zerto Software is that we paid for deployment. We paid for the full service and initial setup. Honestly, that was worth it. It cost as much as the licenses, however, having somebody to be there, walk you through it, find all the loopholes and the menus that aren't quite clear was valuable. There are a few of those products. Morpheus was the same way.
What was our ROI?
I have seen an ROI on HPE Zerto Software based on estimates of what it would cost us to recover from ransomware. That was the whole use case for getting it - determining what it would take if we had to recover, how much it would cost us, and what our man-hours would be. That's what justified this whole project. This project is just to see how it works. If we it, then we'll expand on it.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing for HPE Zerto Software is that for what you get, it's pretty cheap. We did 50 VMs as a trial case, and it was a small portion of our overall budget.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before selecting HPE Zerto Software, I considered Commvault. We are a Commvault customer and use it for backups. We also have the HP StoreEver tape system, a very large tape system. That was the chosen ransomware protection. When you're going for tape, you're in a difficult situation. Tapes work, but if you're having to rebuild from that, it's going to take literal weeks. We needed something faster.
What other advice do I have?
The advice I would give to other organizations considering HPE Zerto Software is to think about your use case. For us, it didn't make sense until we had the hardware and the desire in place. We had a solution that was workable, but the cost was justified when the business decided they needed a more guaranteed recovery time.
A little bit better communication stood out in my evaluation process of HPE Zerto Software. We tried to get more information from the sales team and we had to do a lot of research on our own. The implementation has been very good though.
I rate HPE Zerto Software ten out of ten.
Good data security and business continuity through reliable data vaulting
What is our primary use case?
My main use cases for HPE Zerto Software are related to zero-gap security, as our boss likes to sleep at night and doesn't want us to lose any data if an attack happens; that is our goal.
How has it helped my organization?
The solution has helped us secure our data.
HPE Zerto Software benefits my organization as it checks the signatures of the data, then compares that against the data coming in, saving the good copy in the vault. If anything goes wrong, we can retrieve the data from the vault, which is key for our business continuity.
What is most valuable?
The features of HPE Zerto Software that I prefer the most are the backup and the vault.
It helps with business continuity.
The near-synchronous replication is excellent. It's very important for us. Reducing data loss is critical during unforeseen events.
We've been able to easily retrieve data, and it has been working great.
It's positively impacted our RPOs and RTOs in trial scenarios. It was pretty quick. We also use Cohesity and were able to restore the data from Cohesity. We haven't compared the two; we think they will both work well.
It's enhanced our DR capabilities. While not related to time, it does provide greater recovery capabilities alongside Cohesity.
We are using a Cyber Vault solution as an immutable backup. We're always looking for the good quality of backup within the vault.
What needs improvement?
HPE Zerto Software can be improved, however, I will have my other team members address that question. The ease of setup can be improved in the next release of HPE Zerto Software. The initial setup of the DNS environments and backup environment took us time to implement, and if the process was wizard-driven, that would have been really beneficial.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using HPE Zerto Software for approximately six months now.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I have not experienced any downtime, crashes, or performance issues with HPE Zerto Software that I'm aware of.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
HPE Zerto Software scales effectively with the growing needs of our organization, particularly along with GreenLake capabilities. We provisioned HPE Zerto Software considering our future needs, and so far, there has been no need to expand, so I cannot comment on that experience yet.
How are customer service and support?
I would evaluate customer service and technical support for HPE Zerto Software as spot on. On a scale of one to ten, I would rate customer service and technical support a nine. I gave them this rating since, when we had an issue during installation, the first version of support wasn't successful. The second attempt was very successful.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Prior to adopting HPE Zerto Software, I was using Cohesity to address similar needs, up to an extent.
How was the initial setup?
The solution's implementation took some time for us to complete, and we already have HPE GreenLake and Nimble, which is called Alletra now. Implementing within that infrastructure took some time initially, but afterwards, it was pretty seamless.
What was our ROI?
I will see a return on investment with HPE Zerto Software in the future. If a ransomware attack happens, instead of paying money to get the data unlocked. Investing in implementing HPE Zerto Software will save us a lot of money.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing, setup cost, and licensing of HPE Zerto Software can be made simpler in a usage-based sense.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before selecting HPE Zerto Software, we considered Cohesity, but it is not a true air-gap measure. We were already part of HPE GreenLake, making it easier to go with HPE Zerto Software for better performance and throughput. In the evaluation process, the true air-gap backup solution of HPE Zerto Software positively stood out, while my team could better highlight the negatives.
What other advice do I have?
I would advise another organization considering HPE Zerto Software to go ahead and have that solution in place to protect their company from data loss and ransomware attacks.
On a scale of one to ten, I rate HPE Zerto Software overall as a ten.
