Great way to manage secrets

  • February 22, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Doppler offers a significantly more robust solution than using .env files or managing Environmental Variables across various deployment environments. For us, that's AWS Elastic Beanstalk, CircleCI, and local development environments.

The comparison tool is handy to check whether specific environments are missing variables.
What do you dislike about the product?
Work to set up Doppler was not trivial for us. It was a couple of full days of work, including migrating to Doppler fully in our production environments.

Single sign-on was a bit hard to work with. In particular, we couldn't invite by email after turning on SSO, preventing us from adding users outside of our org, such as vendors.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We needed a more robust solution for managing our secrets.

Doppler has made secrets management a breeze

  • February 20, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We previously tried to wrangle environment secrets in many different ways: env files, cloud secrets managers, custom code, etc. Doppler removed all of that, and added ease-of-change to our systems. It's a massive value add, and it removes any worry about rotating secrets.
What do you dislike about the product?
Setting up environments takes a bit of work, and their docs and tooling could be improved. However, we had no problem gaining 90% of the value and truthfully haven't needed to explore the vast array of other features they provide. Given they're so early (and highly attentive to feedback), I'm not worried that this will improve at breakneck speed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We moved all of our secrets management across all of our services to Doppler. Now, there's one place to find, create, edit, rotate, and govern secrets access for all of our services.

Great tool to reduce environment related issues

  • February 18, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It helps reduce bugs due to environments not syncing across platforms
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing right now - would be good to see more detailed guides for React related development
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We're making our environment management simplified to boost developer productivity

Best way to manage server secrets

  • February 18, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It sync secrets between my cloud services automatically, and the CLI and API are a dream to use. The fact that it's a focused and well-designed service makes it easy to figure out the ins and outs without getting overwhelmed.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not every cloud service has integrations, and it's not Doppler's fault but some cloud services have limitations on their ability to store secrets freely (e.g. Vercel's secret size limit). But Doppler's API and CLI make it a breeze to work around these things anyway.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Storing secrets so that none of our developers need to do so on their computers, sharing secrets across multiple cloud service providers, canonical store for sensitive configuration

Amazing Tool for Environment Variables

  • February 18, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I love how easy Doppler makes it to scale environment variables across multiple repos and a large dev team.
What do you dislike about the product?
There isn't anything that I dislike about Doppler.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Scaling environment variables across a team for local development and CI/CD. Evn files are awful and insecure, easily get out if sync and dont have version control.

The best secret management app!

  • February 17, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Doppler understands and allows us to model each discrete service and environment exactly as it exists in the source. Within each project we can setup the exact environments in the source and link them across projects.
What do you dislike about the product?
I have little-to-no qualms. I wish I could bulk edit secrets across environments, but not a big deal. Doppler can be slow at times to update data, but I imagine that will be fixed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We can handle secrets and environments without having to share anything manually or think about each environment. Secret management is a breeze with Doppler, and onboarding new users is easy.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Just use it. It's so easy.

Gone are the days of sharing .env files

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The most helpful aspect of doppler is the easy rotation of keys. We use doppler for many of our services. If a key is compromised, we can safely swap it out and know that no service will be left behind. Also, expirations on tokens have proven very useful for limiting access.
What do you dislike about the product?
It would be great to move/copy a key over to another environment within a project. That is only supported when a key is created, but an option that is always available would be great.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Doppler primarily saved us time by ensuring our environment variables were consistent across projects and engineers' local environments. Limiting access tokens to dev and staging environments prevents access to production deploys when onboarding new team members.

Must have for teams

  • February 17, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The ability to easily create and manage secrets
What do you dislike about the product?
I think they could have better workflows around user specific environments and configs
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Managing secrets was a headache before. Now we can easily create different environments in Doppler and everyone in the team can contribute.

Secret Management Made Easy

  • February 17, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Doppler makes it super easy to manage secrets across a large team. Their CLI commands, web UI for management, and fast support have made secret management a breeze for us!
What do you dislike about the product?
Because secrets are hosted in a cloud environment, it's possible for Doppler to go down and lose access to secrets. Doppler is very pro-active in letting customers know about downtime, but that can be harrowing when trying to hot-fix an issue.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Doppler has made it super easy to give selective access to secrets to new engineers, which has helped us implement security best practices and make onboarding new engineers much smoother.

Great Fit for Smaller Dev Team

  • February 15, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Doppler has largely solved the "sharing secrets" problem for us, particularly for local development. We use it locally, in K8s, across AWS (mostly via SSM integration), and have started using it with GitHub Actions for builds.
What do you dislike about the product?
The one "missing" feature is peer review. I say "missing" only in that the hand-rolled solution I migrated us from into Doppler was git + ejson based, and all configuration changes came by-way-of pull request which helped catch silly mistakes.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- Sharing secrets for local development
- Enabling application teams to have more control over their deployments (our DevOps team helps initial setup, then app devs have the Doppler UI for making tweaks/changes)
- Configuration visibility (similar point as above, but having a single location for env vars definitely makes them easier to find)
Recommendations to others considering the product:
For sharing secrets to local development, Doppler is second to none and has been a godsend.

For integrating with deployed environments, Doppler has a LOT going for it to help you integrate it (number of pre-canned integrations and documentation otherwise, decent web-based management UI), but may involve changing your process to account for secrets and env vars being managed outside of the typical SDLC. This is still a curve we're climbing, and has been difficult as a GitOps shop, but has been worth the extra friction.
