Pair coding has transformed hiring and now speeds up collaborative interview decisions
What is our primary use case?
I used it as an IDE and as a platform for giving interviews for various companies. When I was recruiting at my last organization, I used it as a recruitment tool for code pairing.
My main use case for CodeSignal Interview is for real-time collaborative coding in a pair-coding environment, where I give a hard problem to a candidate and we can pair-code together, similar to how we would work in a real-life office scenario. This helps me get a great assessment of whether the person would be a suitable collaborative team member.
CodeSignal Interview also provides a vast capability of existing problem questions, existing solutions, executions, and the candidate's attempts to the questions. It shows all of that information, which has been one of my use cases when I was using it for hiring my team.
What is most valuable?
CodeSignal Interview offers several kinds of integrations as the best features. There was an integration with Workday, where candidate results would be published and mapped to Workday if we selected the candidate. For scheduling interviews, it connects with Google Calendar, Calendly, and other similar software. Additionally, CodeSignal allows for session recordings when code edits are made or during interviews.
The integrations and session recording feature have helped my workflow by allowing for certain calibrations to be done, such as determining if a question was hard or easy for different candidates, or allowing supervisors and senior team members to revisit how decisions were made. The session recording features come in handy for these purposes. The integration with Google Calendar helps recruiters check the panel's availability and schedule interviews directly using CodeSignal, providing a seamless experience rather than using multiple tools and software.
CodeSignal Interview has positively impacted my organization by speeding up our hiring process. When my last organization was scaling quickly, it came in handy because rather than manually scheduling interviews, we were able to pre-screen candidates and conduct quick pair-coding sessions that gave us proper insights in a very short amount of time. All the grading, syntax checks, and everything else was done by CodeSignal, which saved us tons of manual labor.
What needs improvement?
CodeSignal Interview can be improved in terms of scalability for when volumes might be too high or when multiple interviewers are using a single CodeSignal Interview license. Additionally, when interviews are customized for data science or hardcore software development roles but I am a QA professional, a customized template library or the ability to customize a set of questions within CodeSignal Interview would be helpful features to implement.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have used CodeSignal Interview multiple times depending on the situation, since it serves as both a hiring tool and a platform I used when looking for job changes.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
CodeSignal Interview is stable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
CodeSignal Interview's scalability was sufficient for the scale our organization was at that stage, which was a 500 to 1,000 person organization. It was pretty sufficiently scalable when we bought multiple licenses.
How are customer service and support?
I had no need to interact with customer support, so I cannot comment.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We previously used HackerRank, and I found CodeSignal Interview to be better and cheaper.
What was our ROI?
We have seen a return on investment with specific examples. Earlier we used to take multiple interview rounds, and CodeSignal Interview saved one interview round per interview. Now we have started using assessments and code pairing exercises. This has saved the total number of hours per interview and has had a positive impact.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
My experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing includes us having bought two or three licenses for our set of interview panels within QA. I am not aware about setup costs or pricing in general, as those things were taken care of by the central team.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Before choosing CodeSignal Interview, I evaluated other options such as HackerRank and Codelity.
What other advice do I have?
I rate CodeSignal Interview an eight out of ten.
I choose eight out of ten because of somewhat lacking reporting aspects or how visually an aggregated report can be seen by somebody who is head of hiring. For them, CodeSignal can do better. Additionally, there is a lack of customized questions for QA. For those two reasons, I deduct two points.
My advice to others looking into using CodeSignal Interview is to use it to save time if you are a hiring manager. It frees up time for your junior resources who might be spending time interacting with candidates who are completely unrelated or not suitable to the requirements and the target hiring criteria. CodeSignal Interview works much better in a standardized assessment test format. My overall review rating for CodeSignal Interview is eight out of ten.
Excellent interview prep
What do you like best about the product?
I like that it is the Duolingo version of practicing for coding challenge technical interviews
What do you dislike about the product?
It is somehow hard to keep up with the challenges
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is not easy to find a software platform that lets you practice coding challenges in a user friendly way. It provides a lot of types of challenges to practice
A Versatile Coding Assessment Platform with Smooth User Experience
What do you like best about the product?
I really appreciate how straightforward and inviting the platform is. The editor feels fast and familiar, so it’s never a hassle to just jump in and start working on problems. There’s a huge selection of coding challenges, and I like that you can pick different difficulty levels or focus on specific topics. The daily problems and game-like rewards actually keep me motivated to stick with it longer than I probably would on my own.
What do you dislike about the product?
I do get the sense that CodeSignal puts a lot of weight on how quickly I can finish challenges, which can get a bit stressful and take the focus away from writing really clear or thoughtful code. I also wish they provided more feedback after I solve something–just knowing I passed isn’t as helpful as learning alternative solutions or tips for optimization. Occasionally, I run into repeated questions or minor glitches, but overall these don’t outweigh the positives for me.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
CodeSignal is solving the challenge of practicing and proving real coding skills in a way that’s organized and easy to access. For me, it’s helpful because I get a wide range of problems that are actually relevant to the kinds of programming interviews or assessments I might face. The platform takes the guesswork out of where to focus my practice, and by having everything in one place, I can track my progress over time.
Also, since CodeSignal is recognized by employers, it gives me a way to demonstrate my skills objectively, which can really help with job applications. The structure and instant feedback keep me motivated and help me see where I need to improve, so it’s making my prep both more focused and more efficient.
Helped us identify the best candidates and improve our skills
What do you like best about the product?
CodeSignal’s user interface is second to none; it allows us to design our own assessments using adaptive programming questions that cover all bases. Also, the automatic assessment is fantastic; applicants (in this case, developers) receive instant feedback on how they are doing, and we can see a deep assessment of their skills as they develop. As a result, we have been able to find the best candidates faster and with much less effort.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not very useful for assessing the ability of candidates to work in a team or communicate effectively. This made it necessary to use additional assessment tools, such as interviews.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
For a large project, we needed developers. We had many CVs, but lacked a reliable method to assess their technical skills. Neither the online tests nor the more conventional interviews were sufficient. We were able to establish a method for objectively assessing the coding skills of candidates during the recruitment process after implementing CodeSignal. It was clear to us that he was offering an impartial assessment. As an added bonus, the developers liked to be able to show off their skills in a real environment rather than answering our questions.
