The iptables command is helpful for setting firewall policies

  • February 22, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Its use cases include general system management, setting up service with the web server, setting up a virtual, private wall with OpenVPN and FTP servers, etc. I have been working with all the aspects of the system in general.

How has it helped my organization?

The stability and the number of users that can access the servers are some of the valuable features.

What is most valuable?

The stability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux is most valuable. I have machines running and working for hours, weeks, and months. The servers don't go down. In Windows, too many services hang, but in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the servers continue working for months. I have had to reboot the machine only two times in years. The system keeps on working. So, stability is the best feature.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is very secure. There hasn't been any successful attack from hackers in years. It's one of the best features. The iptables command is helpful for setting your firewall policies. Only the machines that have the permissions can access the box.

What needs improvement?

We have had issues with the identification of new volumes when you add new disks or storage. You need the remove the machine, which can cause problems when you have high availability. If they can resolve the problem of detection of new volumes, it would be good for system administrators.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've been using Red Hat Enterprise Linux since version 6.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

It's very stable.

How are customer service and support?

I don't have direct contact with their support, but I know that their support is good because I know people who work directly with their technical support.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I've worked with Ubuntu, Debian, SUSE, and other companies. In the past, Debian was the better operating system for servers and Red Hat Enterprise Linux was the better system for desktops, but nowadays, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, and Oracle Linux are the better system for servers in my opinion, and Ubuntu is better for desktops.

This operating system is used by our clients. We don't have it in our organization. We use Windows. I'm not the one who decides about this. My director is the person who take decisions, but I prefer Linux. I like Red Hat Enterprise Linux in servers because there is support, stability, and more users that can access the service. However, in our organization, we use Microsoft Windows because they are partners.

How was the initial setup?

Most of our clients are institutions or public organizations. They have their own infrastructure for security reasons. Having a cloud environment has its own advantages and having your own infrastructure has its advantages. I prefer having my own infrastructure. When you have your own infrastructure, you have more control over all the processes and data of your organization, but I understand that having a cloud setup has advantages because you can manage and automate several systems or processes in the organization.

It's easy to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It's not difficult to install. You have the typical steps of the installation of any Linux-based operating system. Anyone can install this operating system. If you want to install servers such as an Apache server or a web application server, you need certain skills, but the installation of the operating system is easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

I don't know about the pricing because I am not responsible for taking decisions about products used in the enterprise. Our clients use this product, and we use this product with the clients. In my home office, I use a free operating system. There is no support, but I can use it to practice. Our clients need support because it's used in the production environment. I don't know the price of the product, but I understand that with the support that Red Hat offers, compared to other operating systems, Red Hat Enterprise Linux is cheap.

What other advice do I have?

It's easy to install and secure. You can customize it and manage various aspects. It's a good operating system for servers with security. It can run on machines without a powerful CPU or a lot of memory. It's stable.

Overall, I'd rate Red Hat Enterprise Linux a nine out of ten.

Perfect OS for Secure and hassle free Environment

What do you like best about the product?
Red Hat Enterprise Linux is a very robust, safe, and dependable operating system. It is by default built to be secure, and its features may be simply altered to suit the requirements of practically any organization. Also, its strong and well-documented package management system makes installing and updating software simple. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is a great option for businesses of all sizes since it supports a wide range of hardware and virtualization technologies. Finally, Red Hat Enterprise Linux is a great platform for web hosting and development because it supports open-source technologies like Apache, PHP, and MySQL.
What do you dislike about the product?
Red Hat Enterprise Linux doesn't particularly bother me, but I do believe that it has a few shortcomings. The first is that, despite some users preferring to use it, it is more expensive than other Linux operating systems. It can also be more challenging to customize and configure than other operating systems, and it is less user-friendly for Linux beginners. Finally, novice users may find it difficult to use some of the more sophisticated features and functions.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Web servers must be protected. Although the typical Linux Desktop environment is largely safe, the same level of protection is typically insufficient for web servers that hold vital data for businesses and services. When compared to a typical, everyday Ubuntu server, software like RHEL makes the process of safeguarding a server simpler. Our business relies on Red Hat Enterprise Linux for 90% of its servers since it is a robust, dependable OS. In our data centers and other large environments, we use RHEL Standard for standalone servers and RHEL for Datacenters with limitless VM support. We are able to manage our infrastructure more efficiently thanks to it, and with just two sysadmins, we can maintain our 700+ servers and virtual machines.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL): The Go-To Choice for Secure and Reliable Enterprise Computing

  • January 25, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
RHEL is a robust and reliable Linux distribution that is widely used in enterprise environments. It's known for its stability, security and support for enterprise-level features. The built-in features like SELinux and AppArmor provide an added layer of security. Red Hat offers a range of support options, including 24/7 support, which is a big plus for businesses that rely on their systems to be up and running all the time. The downside is that it's a commercial product, so it may be more expensive than other Linux distributions. Overall, it's a great choice for organizations that need a stable, secure and enterprise-ready Linux distribution.
What do you dislike about the product?
RHEL, being a commercial product, can be more costly than other Linux distributions. It may also have limited flexibility and customization options. Additionally, the package availability is limited as it uses its own package manager. Some users may find it not suitable for high-performance computing or large-scale deployment. Also, depending on Red Hat for support and updates may lead to vendor lock-in. However, it's a great choice for organizations that need a stable, secure and enterprise-ready Linux distribution.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
RHEL is known for its stability and reliability, making it a great choice for organizations running mission-critical applications and services. It's built-in features like SELinux and AppArmor provide added security which is important for organizations handling sensitive data. RHEL's scalability features like high availability, load balancing and storage management make it suitable for large-scale deployment. Organizations that need round the clock support can rely on Red Hat's 24/7 support and dedicated security team. Compliance with various industry standards and regulations is another benefit. Plus, it can be cost-effective for organizations as it allows them to use a single operating system for both development and production environments.

Enterprise Linux for a cost

  • January 04, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Red Hat Enterprise Linux allows our company to use Linux in a more serious role because of the level of support we get with the subscription. I was also very impressed with their documentation.
What do you dislike about the product?
The licensing model was a bit confusing to begin with and also expensive for a smaller company with fewer support needs.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Red Hat Enterprise Linux solved our problem of needing a fully supported Linux-based platform on which we could run some of our security scanning software. While it is a cost, the peace of mind and ability to get back on our feet if an issue should arise is still worth it for us.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux offers certain customization possibilities, although these are few compared to those provided by competing open source operating systems like CentOS or Fedora.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is straightforward to deploy in both large and small contexts due to its ability to scale up or down as necessary.

It is simple to incorporate into the current IT infrastructure because it is compatible with a wide range of hardware and software.
