Struggle to get help

  • August 26, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Being able to go at my own pace and, re-enter and redo labs.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is no-one to help if you struggle with completing labs. My preference is for instructor led explanations and assistance not being directed to google or forums. As a beginner instructor input is necessary to build trust in the understanding of basics.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It's isn't solving any problems at the moment I am trying to get experience and qualifications.

Awesome Learning Experience

  • August 17, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the challenge of doing the labs. I learn a lot doing them, they are a mixture of fun and frustrating, in a really good way, they make you think about the subject you are learning about and you get a real feeling of elation when you get them all right. Some can be quite punishing but it all adds to the fun. I really rate it and spend quite a lot of time each week doing them.
What do you dislike about the product?
On occasion they have quite a steep learning curve, but if they werent challenging they wouldnt be as much fun. If IL was a doom difficulty level, they would be "hurt me daddy"
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The labs help me obtain an all round solid education on all aspects of modern security. This translates well to my role and is used on a daily basis.
Sometimes you dont know what you dont know. And IL helps to fill in these knowledge gaps.

Simple format - Bitesize learning at your own pace

  • January 06, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I can dip in and out when I want to and set my own goals. The format of the learning is simple to follow, gets the grey matter working and doesn't leave you feeling overwhelmed.
What do you dislike about the product?
Very little to dislike. There are some quirks that you adapt to (like any solution that's provided), but easy to navigate and easy to learn. Nothing negative to report really.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am aware of my skills gap, and having the opportunity to be exposed to my weaknesses and close these gaps is invaluable. The labs continue to help me recognise the things I didn't know that I didn't know! The labs are very enlightening and give me a different perspective on the way I'm thinking, which in turn helps me develop myself.

What do you like best about the product?
Many different labs for a wide variety of security-related topics.
The labs have the right size and often deploy virtual infrastructure.
I feel like I learn way more with this practical approach than just reading a book or watching videos about a topic.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some labs are a bit outdated, making them very hard to finish.
For example, you must use the Wayback machine to access an old snapshot of a real-world Twitter account.
But sometimes, you can no longer access the old tweets through the Wayback machine.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I passed my CISSP exam five months ago and am starting a new role as an Information Security Architect within my company.
Immersivelabs allows me to profoundly deepen my knowledge about cybersecurity in a way that fits my preferred learning style.

Great for experienced professionals, nightmare for new ones.

What do you like best about the product?
Lots of tools, hands-on experience. If you actually already know what you're doing, anyways.
What do you dislike about the product?
In my experience with the labs so far, Immersive has taken the easy way out of not helping actually instruct people. They claim that it's so you'll use your own thinking skills and figure things out, but the incredible lack of any guidance whatsoever really just makes it seem like they didn't want to bother creating any guides or having people around to help with the labs. I've solved 25 of the labs so far on my own, and even then I feel I've wasted an incredible amount of time that would have been better spent with actual occasional tips and guidance.

Even things in the "intro" subjects are clearly designed for people who have been doing this for a while and already know their way efficiently around CLIs and a myriad of tools. I don't even know half the time if I'm really gaining much because some things are unsolvable unless you already know exactly what to do or you get a lucky guess. There are no explanations for any of the answers, so you better just hope you eventually understand what you did if you guessed it.

If you get stuck, their philosophy seems to be "oh well!" The only option you have is to hope someone on Reddit or another forum also posted asking for help and got an answer, because it sure isn't Immersive Labs' problem! The only way to contact them is to "report a bug" or "problem" in the lab. So be prepared to give up on your lab for hours until someone replies to you! Even then they literally promise they won't help you - the sparse "briefing" description they give you is it, and they're just there to tell you if your lab is working correctly or not.

Having been an instructor myself, I understand the need for hands-on learning and not hand-holding your students. These labs take it to the opposite extreme of hand-holding which is honestly worse in my experience; completely abandoning you and pretending that's the same as teaching you. Plopping someone in front of a computer with forensics tools and just saying "okay, go" is not teaching. Guidance, tips, etc can all be incorporated in a way that doesn't hand-hold or give out answers.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Used for training

The best learning platform I have used

  • October 09, 2022
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that the scenarios are all based on real-world examples of tasks and incidents you might deal with. They react to feedback very quickly and update their labs very quickly too.
What do you dislike about the product?
I would like to see a better hints/answers mechanism in place as this would just be the cherry on the cake in my opinion.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am a firm believer in analysts/responders being able to use their learning in a range environment rather than the first time being in a clients production environment and this platform allows that to happen.

less technical challenges

What do you like best about the product?
it is not so interactive most labs on the cloud are very basic.
What do you dislike about the product?
i am not a big fan of Q&A labs as retention of knowledge from those labs are very low.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
it is good activity in downtime

What do you like best about the product?
I like the independence and how intuitive it's presented. I like too that there are people in the same sequence and it is of the competitive type. I'm very satisfied.
What do you dislike about the product?
In my point of view, It's a bit awkward that at times it's difficult to find a way forward, at first he appeared to me but then it stopped. Nevertheless, I like the platform.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I think it solves what is related to the lack of technological education for which cyber insecurity has been increasing. Train more people to face this technological reality and full of fraud risks and others.
