Itential has proven to be the right overlay technology to meet our automation needs.
What do you like best about the product?
Itential has proven to be the right choice for us as an overlay orchestration platform. Our primary goal was to consolidate years of isolated, ad-hoc Python scripts and various automation tools that we had built to support our network infrastructure.
While we had developed internal UI tooling to help teams interact with our scripts and smaller automation solutions, we struggled to scale efficiently due to the significant effort required to accomplish these tasks. Itential solved this challenge by providing the flexibility to integrate direct API calls, Python scripts, Ansible playbooks, and more under unified orchestrated workflows. This capability allows us to rapidly transform manual processes into automated ones.
The platform has given us access to a broader toolkit when executing tasks, enabling us to design automation more effectively by selecting the optimal tool for each specific job. Previously, we might have defaulted to high-code Python solutions even when a direct API call combined with quick data analysis would have been faster and more appropriate. With Itential, we can now build better-organized, more scalable workflows that leverage the most suitable approach for each task.
Additionally, Itential provides the ability to trigger automation workflows through multiple interaction methods—including forms, API calls, scheduled tasks, and webhooks—without requiring us to build and manage the underlying code and infrastructure for each method. This capability significantly reduces the operational overhead for our staff, allowing them to focus on higher-value work rather than maintaining the infrastructure needed to support different workflow triggers.

What do you dislike about the product?
While not really a criticism but rather an observation: for teams new to automation, the breadth of Itential's capabilities can initially feel overwhelming. Without prior experience, it can be challenging to determine which approach, tool, or method is most appropriate for specific tasks.
However, this actually highlights one of the platform's greatest strengths—the Itential team itself. They are exceptionally well-equipped and experienced in helping organizations navigate these decisions. Rather than simply delivering solutions, they take a consultative approach, teaching you the how and why behind each process as the work is being built. This ensures your team becomes better equipped over time, leading to more successful long-term implementation and automation outcomes.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
tential is addressing several critical challenges we faced with our network infrastructure automation:
Problem: Fragmented Automation Landscape
We had years of isolated, ad-hoc Python scripts and various automation tools scattered across our infrastructure with no unified way to orchestrate them together.
Benefit: Itential provides a single platform where we can integrate direct API calls, Python scripts, Ansible playbooks, and other tools under unified orchestrated workflows, creating cohesion from our previously fragmented automation.
Problem: Scaling Bottlenecks
Our internal UI tooling helped teams interact with scripts and smaller automation, but we couldn't scale efficiently due to the significant effort required to expand these capabilities.
Benefit: We can now rapidly transform manual processes into automated workflows, allowing us to scale our automation efforts without the previous operational constraints.
Problem: Infrastructure Overhead
We had to build and manage the underlying code and infrastructure to support different ways of triggering automation (forms, APIs, scheduling, webhooks), which consumed significant staff resources.
Benefit: Itential provides built-in support for multiple trigger methods without requiring us to develop or maintain the underlying infrastructure, significantly reducing our operational overhead.
Problem: Suboptimal Tool Selection
We often defaulted to high-code Python solutions even when simpler approaches like direct API calls would have been faster and more appropriate for the task.
Benefit: The platform gives us access to a broader toolkit, enabling us to design automation more effectively by selecting the optimal approach for each specific job, resulting in better-organized and more scalable workflows.
