Customizable features boost productivity but integration capabilities need enhancement

  • June 06, 2025
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

The main use case for Collibra Lineage is focused on the data product integration. They want the data lineage, data product lineage, and data products. They have some AWS platform in their state, and they have implemented external layers on top of that, including iceberg tables. The data lineage and delta are used to write a model with data products in Snowflake. In the Snowflake layer, they have their reporting in Tableau.

They have implemented a model with data products in Snowflake, which helps them in reporting in Tableau.

What is most valuable?

The features of Collibra Lineage that I have found most valuable include its non-integrated, non-native nature, which is one of the unique features for customization. In my case, data engineers have created their approach with Snowflake. By using a customized approach, they develop simple solutions and integrate with Collibra. A custom lineage, technical lineage helps me to design or join all these multiple layers. For example, connecting three Oracle instances to AWS is not available out-of-the-box, so there is a function to customize.

The main benefits that Collibra Lineage provides include measurable advantages. Once I have Lineage implemented, I can implement any automation on top of that. When I classify the D's on the data product, I can transform that data word to all the related columns using automation and workflow. This functionality avoids needing to do everything manually, and business only has to handle it at one layer, which is the data product. The lineage connects backward, allowing me to push back all these D's across all connected columns and registers. It's useful for the technical team to understand how all the data businesses seem different.

What needs improvement?

When discussing potential areas of improvement for Collibra Lineage, there are several cases to consider. If we discuss Lineage, which is the major part I work with, solutions are implemented in PySpark, and Collibra does not have out-of-the-box features for that. If a developer implements ETL in Glue or PySpark, Collibra cannot capture lineage out of that. This is an area for improvement, alongside integration with Starburst, which is another area where lineage capability is lacking.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with Collibra Lineage for five years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the stability of Collibra Lineage as seven. This is a fair assessment compared to alternative tools such as IBM Cloud Pak for Data, which I've also worked with.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

In terms of scalability, Collibra Lineage's performance is reliable, as the lineage harvest runs on the lineage server which operates on Collibra cloud. I have not faced any issues concerning scalability. Despite earlier concerns when it took eight hours for one data job, recent improvements have reduced this time to three to four hours, though it still depends on metadata volume.

How are customer service and support?

For technical support, I would rate it as eight because with premium support, the service is excellent.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of Collibra Lineage is very simple nowadays. You can drag lineage from the UI by selecting and dropping whatever configuration you want. For configuring Lineage capability for Snowflake, there are multiple options available. It's particularly efficient since last year when they moved lineage to UI.

What other advice do I have?

I have not used data flow mapping with Collibra Lineage. I question the helpfulness of visualization features for Collibra, particularly lineage visualization.

I agree with the assessment that lineage visualization in Collibra is valuable.

Overall rating: 7 out of 10.

Provides good Data Stewardship feature, but cannot do element-to-element level data tracking

  • March 07, 2024
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution's Data Stewardship part. We tried to explore the policy management piece, but we were unable to get through it. We haven't worked excessively on that. It was just some POCs or MVPs, but this is something that we would like to explore in the future. This is something that will be our future requirement in six to seven months down the line.

What is most valuable?

We use the solution's Data Stewardship part.

What needs improvement?

We are not able to ingest all the data in Collibra, and that's why we cannot do element-to-element level data tracking.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using Collibra Governance for two years.

How was the initial setup?

I rate the solution's initial setup as medium because it's not very difficult. We have to look at a few nuances from the infrastructure and performance perspectives. We have to consider whether we would have the leverage capabilities for that. So, all these things need to be considered from the engineering side.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Collibra Governance is an expensive solution.

What other advice do I have?

Our current focus is more on the solution's stewardship, cataloging, and reference data features. The one feature of Collibra Governance we would like to explore is the automated tagging of PII data. We do deal with such kinds of data within our organization. It would be helpful if there were any videos available for us to go through because this is something that will help us in the near future.

We are not extensively using the solution's data lineage functionality because we are simply building over it. The only challenge for us is from the connective side. We are not able to ingest all the data in Collibra, and that's why we cannot do element-to-element level data tracking.

The major Broadlock would be the integration piece. If that is done, we'll be able to have all our data in the Collibra. The data lineage functionality is a really good feature, and we would really love to leverage it. The challenge is that the connectors are not available in the pipeline.

Collibra Governance is deployed on the cloud in our organization.

Overall, I rate the solution a seven out of ten.

Has efficient feature for endpoint lineage, but they could provide wide range of connectors

  • March 07, 2024
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

The product’s primary use case is metadata management. It helps us capture different datasets, including images, glossaries, etc.

How has it helped my organization?

Collibra Catalog has significantly enhanced data governance and compliance for our team, primarily through its valuable feature of endpoint lineage enabling visual representation of the data. However, it takes a lot of manual effort for the same. They could introduce more features to align the process.

What needs improvement?

A key area for improvement in Collibra Catalog lies in its integration capabilities, particularly with a broader range of sources such as MongoDB and others. It is a time-consuming process for the engineering team to set up custom connectors. Thus, they could provide a wide range of connectors to address this issue.

For how long have I used the solution?

We have been using Collibra Catalog for three or four years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I rate the product’s stability an eight out of ten.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

We encounter complexities in scaling the platform. It requires a lot of manual effort. At present, we only have 60 to 70 users in our organization. Our objective is to implement it for around 2000 users per month.

I rate the scalability a six out of ten.

How are customer service and support?

I haven’t interacted directly with the technical support team. From the higher-level perspective, there have been interactions regarding our requirements, although the turnaround time for addressing the issues needs improvement.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is complicated in terms of accessibility for enterprise users. Determining the optimal number of licenses for an enterprise proved to be a complex task, adding a layer of complexity to the implementation. For governance, they should include customized workflows.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The product is highly priced compared to other vendors. It becomes a challenge as we have to incur additional costs for widespread connectors that are unavailable in the product. It takes a good amount of time and effort to build custom connectors as well. There could be better integration with other systems instead.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend Collibra Catalog to others and rate it a seven out of ten.

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

A reliable solution that integrates well with several intakes, but it can be a bit expensive

  • October 27, 2023
  • Review from a verified AWS customer

What is our primary use case?

Collibra is for the classification of data. Collibra is being sourced to all the intakes for the company, which might be legacy systems or new systems or might be lineage as well. Collibra takes up and does its own governance over there, and the data is fed into Ataccama. Ataccama and Collibra seem to be cascaded, but Collibra is the first player. But that doesn't mean it saves a lot for Ataccama.

What is most valuable?

The solution's most valuable features are its scalability and how it can be integrated to any other intakes.

What needs improvement?

Collibra gives a lot of facilities in the cloud, but achieving those facilities on-prem becomes a big challenge. Collibra should loosen up those areas there and try to give stakes for that. The uses can vary. They can be limited to a small amount, or they can be a huge chunk. If Collibra thinks the utilization should be controlled and monitored by them on a cloud level, making for highly scalable data, it's good for them. But when the customer needs it, Collibra will be in the minute volume, in which case they will go for the on-premise service. That's what I feel Collibra lacks because some things cannot be integrated for on-premise customers.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used this solution for two years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Overall, Collibra is a stable tool. Because of the scalability, the volumes are big, and you must have patience. That's where Collibra gets conflicted. There is highly scalable data with big databases connected. You'll need patience to wait for the batch lists to be completed. Calibra is slow but stable.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Collibra is highly scalable. Since Collibra works with Ataccama, 60 to 70 people use this solution.

How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is exhaustive, but I cannot say that it's difficult or easy.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Collibra is a bit expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I recommend Collibra only when customers have a very sparse intake. Such as if they have primitive lineages and data sources that they cannot make obsolete or remove. Suppose they have varieties of intakes. In that case, I definitely would ask customers to go for Collibra. That's not because an intake can be integrated into Collibra. The profitability is that Collibra is integrated at the output end. The team is working on visualization. The service team is very preemptive and efficient. Collibra will give you a good scoop. If a company is vast enough and has various intakes, databases, and sources, Collibra is good for them.

I rate Collibra a seven out of ten. Depending on the client, the rating may vary. If someone has told you that they have various sparse intakes and need to govern their data, Collibra will be a nine out of ten. But for a company with a limited intake, I would say that Collibra would be a load for them on the price side.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

Hybrid Cloud

If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?

Amazon Web Services (AWS)
