Near Real-Time Notifications when things go down
What do you like best about the product?
The dashboards and alerts that let us know when something is down, often before the phone calls and emails start coming in.
What do you dislike about the product?
The UI can be difficult to navigate at times as it's too cluttered, especially on smaller screens.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Not knowing when servers, websites, etc are down or having issues.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Configure your MIBs right and you'll have a great reporting tool with easy to see alerts in your dashboard and notifications. Extremely helpful for physical server monitoring in a world that's rapidly moving to virtual servers and cloud-based software as a service.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to be alerted about any issues that occur on our network. Be it high CPU utilization, low disk space, virtual machine loss of connectivity, node disconnection and high link utilization. Thus allowing us to identify the issue quickly and implement a solution.

Initial purchase and maintenance are a bit expensive. Large deployments require additional pollers which add to cost, maintenance, and internal resources needed when some competitive products can achieve the same level of performance from one server.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Monitoring of a large campus network infrastructure. We have been able to automate alerts, provide proactive alerting of equipment failing but not yet out of service. Also reporting provides useful information for decision making in regards to performance, capacity, and replacement intervals for network devices.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Evaluate open source options, consider internal technical expertise if you are entertaining the open source route. Evaluate commercial products using a trial period of 90 days if possible.
Solarwinds SAM, keeping an eye on stuff so I don't have to.

Great tool for knowing what's going on in your environment
What do you like best about the product?
You can customize what you want to monitor and how, and also set up notifications for specific events.
What do you dislike about the product?
Depending on the size and complexity of your environment it can take awhile to fine tune it to do what you want.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We needed something to help us catch potential problems before they started to affect production servers and applications, such as low disk space or issues with SQL databases. SAM allows us to be notified about these so we can address them before they have a negative impact on our end users.

It's definitely worth trying a demo.
