    Advanced traceability has improved debugging and now optimizes complex embedded architectures

    What is our primary use case?

    For seven years, I was a software architect and used QNX Neutrino as part of my platforms. QNX Neutrino was the main operating system for one of the processors that we were using. I find it difficult to mention one specific thing about my main use case or how I was using QNX Neutrino in my projects, as it is a substantial stack of libraries, tools, and SDKs. I believe we were using most of it.

    I was mainly involved in projects with product lifecycle and software architecture on that processor, deploying different in-house built platforms while referencing them to QNX Neutrino and stepping on QNX Neutrino itself. It is genuinely difficult to mention just one thing.

    What is most valuable?

    QNX Neutrino offers excellent features including debuggability. I would highlight traceability of the processes, configuration of the processes, network, memory layout, and so forth.

    Out of those features, the traceability of the processes and the threads made my life significantly easier and was especially valuable in my projects. I was able to easily see when a thread was being actively used or when it was just looping without making any progress or when it was in idle. This was very helpful when we had to improve the startup of the system, as we were able to reduce it from twelve seconds to approximately two or three seconds just by analyzing how the threads were being started and their dependencies. This was one of the most useful features.

    QNX Neutrino has positively impacted my organization because it was chosen as the main operating system for the products, at least for the graphical interface communication and for the application layer management. It was established as the best operating system for those kinds of platforms in my organization.

    What needs improvement?

    QNX Neutrino can be improved by simply continuing the good support and enhancing the toolsets.

    While I cannot identify specific improvements needed for QNX Neutrino right now, something that could improve what I was doing would be to somehow analyze those threads. Instead of me going through the trace logger, it would be beneficial for QNX Neutrino to make automatic analysis and determine what the correct order of the startup of the processes should be in order to achieve the best startup of the system. I think that could be a valuable addition.

    For how long have I used the solution?

    I have been using QNX Neutrino for approximately ten years.

    How are customer service and support?

    Regarding specific outcomes, I cannot speak to that because when I started, we were already using QNX Neutrino. We were only updating it, building upon it, and reconfiguring different systems. I observed that QNX Neutrino was easy to work with and had very good support. Therefore, I cannot say if it was better than anything else.

    What other advice do I have?

    I do not think I can give that kind of advice to others looking into using QNX Neutrino because it is very specific to the people that are using it, and it depends on everyone's specific needs, projects, and so forth. It is not advice that I would give in a general manner.

    I would rate QNX Neutrino a nine on a scale of one to ten.

    I give it a nine because I always operate with the idea that something could be improved, even if I do not know that it exists. I cannot give a perfect score just for that reason. It is certainly a better option than Linux for those kinds of projects.

    I have no additional thoughts about QNX Neutrino.

    What is our primary use case?

    QNX Neutrino is currently one of many trials that we are conducting for testing the best match for our different product lines as we have been experimenting and preparing for potential customer projects.

    For example, we are using QNX Neutrino for developing one of our ADAS domain controller ECU, which is based on Texas Instruments TDA4 VM SOC, as a middleware stack on which we were deploying some of our performance algorithms.

    That is the only use case that I have been personally involved with, and that is all I have to add about my use of QNX Neutrino in these projects.

    What is most valuable?

    I would say for the performance cores, QNX Neutrino offers enhanced security features compared to functional safety and security features when compared to any Linux alternatives.

    We use our products for ADAS and automated driving, which are ASIL B to ASIL D level safety-critical applications, and QNX Neutrino helps us by providing certified middleware stacks so we don't have to do extensive testing on it, allowing us to focus only on the functions and algorithms. Using any open-source Linux would cause a lot of effort for us to test the overall software, so QNX Neutrino actually helps us reduce our effort and focus our software testing only on the functions and algorithms. It also offers virtual ECU type environments for a lot of testing even before integrating the whole software onto the actual hardware, thus saving us a lot of time later.

    What needs improvement?

    I cannot answer how QNX Neutrino can be improved as I don't have any pain points or areas I wish were better.

    There is nothing that comes to my mind regarding needed improvements.

    For how long have I used the solution?

    I have been using QNX Neutrino since 2024, although we haven't made any salable products with it, we have used it for most of our core development.

    What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    QNX Neutrino is stable.

    Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

    I did not previously use a different solution before QNX Neutrino.

    Which other solutions did I evaluate?

    I haven't evaluated other options before choosing QNX Neutrino, as we were just experimenting with it.

    What other advice do I have?

    There is nothing more that I would like to add about the features.

    It's too early to say how QNX Neutrino has impacted my organization positively, as we haven't really noticed any significant advantages, but we are preparing for next-gen use cases. We haven't won any customer project where we had to use QNX Neutrino middleware stack, but we do have a lot of exposure to it right now, and when we win such businesses, we know we should be using QNX Neutrino.

    I would say nothing specific regarding expectations or hopes for how QNX Neutrino could impact our team's workflow or efficiency if we move forward with it, as we already have other alternative solutions. One good thing that I can mention is that with the performance cores, like the A72 cores, we have very less mass production experience with them, so if we were to launch on a customer-selected SOC with performance cores, QNX Neutrino might give us some time savings because it has already proven middleware stack compared to Linux.

    What do you like best about the product?
    The best thing about this platform is that it stands out for its reliability, deterministic real-time performance, and its microkernel architecture. Also, their operating system is designed specifically for critical applications where downtime or failure is not an option. I also liked their strong security model and other safety certifications, which support our virtualisation through multiple regulations and criteria. This platform is also a solid foundation for system development.
    What do you dislike about the product?
    The biggest challenge I faced in this platform is its learning curve, especially for our developers coming from a Linux-based environment. Their licensing and commercial deployment costs are higher compared with other open-source alternatives out there in this space. Also, their ecosystem and community resources are much smaller when compared with other open-source distributions. Their community feedback frequently points to cost as a consideration for even smaller projects.
    What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
    This platform solves the problem of the need for highly reliable and predictable software operations in critical environments. This platform also shows our real-time responsiveness, system stability and fault isolations along with safety compliances, which are tracked effectively. This platform also helps us by reducing operational risk by improving confidence when teams are deploying systems. Overall, their readiness and reliability are exceptional features of this platform, I would say.

    What do you like best about the product?
    I really like BlackBerry QNX for its unmatched combination of real-time determinism, microkernel reliability, and built-in functional safety certifications. It provides consistent, low-latency performance essential in safety-critical environments. The fault-isolation architecture significantly reduces system-wide failure risks. Its pre-certified components simplify compliance for standards like ISO 26262, streamlining development time and risk. The real-time determinism ensures predictable response even under load, which is crucial for systems like automotive ADAS and industrial controls. The microkernel architecture allows for fault isolation, meaning a failure in one component won't crash the whole system, making debugging easier and improving system uptime. It's a trusted platform for mission-critical systems.
    What do you dislike about the product?
    I'm not entirely thrilled with BlackBerry QNX's resource footprint and hardware requirements. Its robustness comes with a relatively higher hardware cost compared to lighter RTOSes, and it performs best on more powerful SoCs, which isn't as cost-effective for simple, low-cost embedded endpoints. Also, the development tooling and ecosystem familiarity could be better. The QNX development environment is powerful but specialized, and new team members often face a learning curve since it's not as widely known or as familiar as Linux-based toolchains. It'd be great to have more modern, streamlined IDE integration to help speed up onboarding.
    What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
    I use BlackBerry QNX for safety-critical systems. It delivers deterministic, low-latency performance and addresses functional safety and compliance effectively, reducing certification complexity. Its microkernel architecture minimizes system failures and enhances security in connected devices.

    Secure, Efficient OS for Embedded Systems

    What do you like best about the product?
    I like that BlackBerry QNX is a very good Linux-based OS for embedded systems, offering good security and safety features, along with process monitoring and management from the OS/Kernel layer. Many of the commands in QNX are similar to Linux, which is convenient. The safety and security features it provides are beneficial because, as an embedded software company, we would otherwise need to implement these features from scratch, saving us a lot of time and effort. I find that some features like process management, process monitoring, and CPU monitoring are provided by QNX by default, which makes things easier for us. I also think QNX is very useful as an OS running on any embedded system, especially for running ADAS features. Setting it up was somewhat easy, due to the support from a different team within our organization. I would rate it a 9 out of 10 in recommending it to a friend or colleague.
    What do you dislike about the product?
    Not much, just that some (very few as far as I know) of the Linux commands don't work in BlackBerry QNX or might have a completely different command for the same task. So to provide support for those commands/task could be one of the improvement areas for BlackBerry QNX.
    What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
    I find BlackBerry QNX provides excellent security and safety features for embedded systems, saving us time and effort by including essential processes like monitoring and management. Its Linux-like commands are also a plus, though some differ, which could improve.

    What do you like best about the product?
    It really gives high preference to security especially IOTs where most OS fail to provide good security making them vulnerable to hack threats
    What do you dislike about the product?
    Could be more user friendly, sometimes the interface is laggy or needs to be restarted

    IOT devices are very vulnerable to hack threats, QNX has advance protection layer which is the reason why I prefer it over android or other OS for my IOTs

    What do you like best about the product?
    BlackBerry QNX is built with security in mind. It is a real-time operating system (RTOS) capable of ensuring predictable reaction times in the face of unexpected occurences. As a result, it's perfect for use in mission-critical applications like those found in the automobile and aerospace sectors.
    What do you dislike about the product?
    It is a sophisticated operating system that might take some time to master. This may be an issue for certain people. Blackberry QNX is not the most affordable operating system available. This may be a consideration for some organisations.
    What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
    BlackBerry is also quite safe. It employes a microkernel design, which lowers the attack surface and makes exploiting flaws more difficult. Blackberry QNX also contains security features including role-based access control and encryption

    Because I can connect QNX Momentics tools to my instances, I can easily check out a program change without having to set up something to virtualizat local on machine. And if I have a problem I can share with a colleague who can fix it while I am getting coffee.

    What do you like best about the product?
    Blackberrry QNX is expectionally good in developing the interface for infotainment systems and can be used in Connected Car tech, that make this stand out from the rest.
    What do you dislike about the product?
    The major downside of QNX Hypervisor is, it's not portable across other microservices, cause it doesn't support other microcontrollers, if that's improved this product would be groun-breaker.
    What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
    ONX features of a task-scheduling techniques with semaphore and Deadlock preventions. This makes the sophisticated QNX Hypervisor a go-to choice, if the hardware (microcontroller) is supported.
