Notion uses Pinecone to help power Notion AI Q&A feature for millions of users

Challenge

Notion is a productivity and note-taking web application serving hundreds of millions of customers. The company wanted to improve the user experience of its AI assistant, Notion AI, by developing a foundational infrastructure for its generative query and answer (Q&A) feature.

Solution

Notion procured Pinecone’s serverless vector database in AWS Marketplace to optimize costs and streamline procurement. The company uses Pinecone as a Knowledge Base for its retrieval augmented generation (RAG) workflow from ingestion to retrieval and prompt augmentation. This provides relevant, accurate, and quicker responses from search to end-users.

Outcome

  1. Streamlined procurement with AWS Marketplace Private Offers, trusted and vetted ISVs, pre-negotiated Master Services Agreement, consolidated billing.

  2. Enabled relevant information retrieval in a natural, more human way across docs, projects, meeting notes, etc.

  3. Launched first-to-market productivity AI assistant at scale, generating a new revenue stream of tens of millions of dollars
