Privacy management and compliance
Address regulatory standards, such as GDPR, CCPA and COPA, for management of data privacy and compliance.
Protecting personal information is a critical priority within public sector. Many organizations, such as education, view data protection as a strategic imperative. AWS and security solution sellers continually monitor the evolving privacy regulatory and legislative landscape to identify changes and determine what tools customers might need to meet support their compliance needs based on the applications they use.

WireWheel
The WireWheel Data Privacy and Protection Platform helps improve privacy compliance. Laws such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) enable Public Sector organizations to manage privacy policies at scale. WireWheel supports all phases of a privacy management program, including data inventory and mapping, collaboration, vendor risk management, third-party compliance and data subject access request.
WireWheel provides an easy-to-use platform that makes challenges with managing and keeping up with Privacy Impact Assessment (PIAs), Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), vendor assessments, records of processing, and data subject access requests (DSARs) a thing of the past. WireWheel combines privacy expertise and machine learning to remove error-prone manual processes, scan and surface sensitive information, and communicate privacy risk in a way that is accessible across an organization. WireWheel also provides customizable tools for educational institutions to increase trust and transparency with their students about collected information.
WireWheel Basic, Advanced, and Enterprise Packages leverage Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) and AWS Lambda for their application services. Database options include MongoDB or Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS), and Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) buckets for client-specific storage, and client-hosted web assets. The architectural diagram below shows examples of other data flows in and out of the WireWheel production environment, such as SaaS and API solutions for e-mail delivery.
Blackboard is a leading education technology company that serves K-12 and Higher Education, and helps institutions solve their most critical challenges in education to drive student success. As a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider to educational institutions, Blackboard manages sensitive data of millions of students on behalf of its clients. To keep up with increasing compliance requirements and respond to growing client privacy questions, Blackboard needed an innovative solution to streamline its processes.
WireWheel was selected to help track personal data as it comes into Blackboard, as data is processed, and as information is shared with clients. WireWheel also helps Blackboard manage compliance with data privacy requirements, having upgraded them from a manual Word and Excel checklist process to an automated, centralized, and consistent workflow integrated with AWS.
WireWheel converts data flows to easily visualized maps, displaying in real time where each educational institution’s data is stored, processed, or transferred throughout its infrastructure – even identifying when that data is encrypted, replicated, or accessed. This helps ensure compliance with GDPR, among other regulations.
WireWheel has worked closely with us to understand our vision and requirements and have continued to enhance their solution at an astonishing pace. We highly recommend WireWheel to organizations that want to take their privacy program to the next level.
