Use of an up-to-dated version of WordPress along with its MySQL, Apache2, PHP-FPM and PHPMyAdmin makes your life easier and your deployments faster. SmartAMI engineers test it before it is published to ensure that it is free of problems with dependencies and that it runs in AWS environment without any issues. It does support basic emails sending but ask AWS to increase your daily instance limits and check spam folder if you don't configure DNS records properly OR use WordPress SMTP plugins to send emails from WordPress using your email providers.
