You pay by the hour for Hardened Debian 12, a pre-configured machine image. Pricing follows the EC2 instance type you launch, so each dimension maps to one instance size. Rates scale with instance capacity: small shared instances like t2.micro and t3.nano cost less per hour, while large memory, compute, storage, and accelerated instances cost more. Instance families cover general purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and GPU or machine-learning workloads. You choose the instance that fits your workload, and the hourly software charge applies on top of the underlying AWS infrastructure cost. You only pay while instances run.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I get for the hourly rate on a chosen instance type?
You get the Hardened Debian 12 machine image, a pre-configured and security-hardened operating system. The rate covers the software licence for that image on the instance size you launch. AWS bills the underlying compute, storage, and network separately from this software charge.
Am I charged when an instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software charge applies only while an instance runs. A fully stopped instance stops accruing software charges. You may still pay AWS for attached storage on a stopped instance, but the Hardened Debian 12 licence meters running hours only.
What drives my cost when I run several different instance types?
Each running instance bills independently at the hourly rate tied to its type. Charges add together across all active instances on the same invoice. Larger memory, compute, storage, or GPU instances carry higher hourly rates, so instance size and count together drive your total.
