Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.8 Minimal AMI - Secure, Lightweight, AWS-Ready
Deploy a hardened, RHEL-compatible Linux server in under 60 seconds. This Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.8 AMI from Rinne Labs is purpose-built for teams that need a minimal, secure operating system with native AWS integration - without the bloat of standard images
Why This AMI Over Standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux Images
This image is built from the official Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.8 ISO with only the "Minimal Install" package group, resulting in a 10GB footprint compared to larger default installations. Key differences from standard community images:
Smaller disk footprint - 10GB root partition (expandable) with no LVM overhead, reducing EBS storage costs
Pre-installed AWS tooling - AWS CLI, Elastic Network Adapter (ENA), and NVMe drivers are ready from first boot
Faster instance launches - Minimal package set and no LVM means quicker boot sequences for auto-scaling workloads
Red Hat Update Infrastructure (RHUI) - Enabled for ongoing package updates without requiring user authentication
Extended Update Service (EUS) - This AMI is built with EUS enabled, allowing for extended support and security updates for RHEL 9.8
GPT and UEFI boot - Compatible with the latest AWS instance families including Graviton and Nitro-based types
XFS filesystem - High-performance filesystem suited for database and analytics workloads
Key Features
Built from the official Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.8 ISO image
Cloud-init installed and configured for automated provisioning
Automatic root disk resize based on instance volume configuration
RHUI enabled for ongoing package updates
Updated with the latest security patches at time of build
Key-based authentication with 'ec2-user' username
Use Case: Auto-Scaling Web Tier
Teams running auto-scaling groups behind an Application Load Balancer benefit directly from this image's minimal footprint. When scaling events trigger new instances, the 10GB image with pre-installed AWS drivers launches and registers with the target group faster than full-sized AMIs. The reduced EBS volume size also lowers per-instance storage costs across dozens or hundreds of instances in the group
Ideal For
DevOps engineers deploying ephemeral workloads and CI/CD build agents
Platform teams migrating from CentOS to a supported RHEL-compatible distribution
Developers needing lightweight instances for testing and development
Database administrators wanting a minimal OS layer beneath their data tier
Startups optimizing cloud spend with smaller, faster-booting instances

About Rinne Labs
Rinne Labs specializes in building VM and container images, cloud infrastructure, and Kubernetes technologies. The team brings more than 10 years of experience in CI/CD, deployment automation, configuration management, backend development, and API design. We are committed to providing high-quality, secure, and up-to-date images for your environments
Security-hardened from first boot: SELinux enforcing mode enabled, root login disabled, key-based authentication only via 'ec2-user', and all latest security patches applied at build time. Unlike default community images, this AMI ships pre-hardened so you spend less time on post-launch lockdown and more time deploying your applications
Native AWS integration out of the box: AWS CLI, Elastic Network Adapter (ENA), and NVMe drivers are pre-installed and configured. Cloud-init handles automated provisioning, and the root partition automatically expands to match your configured EBS volume size - no manual disk operations required after launch
Minimal 8GB footprint with no LVM: Built from the official Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.8 ISO using only the Minimal Install package group. Uses GPT and UEFI boot with XFS filesystem. The smaller image size means faster instance launches for auto-scaling workloads and lower per-instance EBS storage costs compared to full-sized Linux AMIs

RHEL 9.8 EUS (RedHat 9.8) for ARM64 with support by Rinne Labs
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour for a preconfigured Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.8 EUS image running on ARM64 hardware, with vendor support included. Each dimension maps to a specific AWS ARM64 (Graviton-based) EC2 instance type, such as general-purpose, compute-optimized, memory-optimized, storage-optimized, and bare-metal families. Your rate scales with the instance you choose: larger sizes and specialized families cost more per hour. You are billed only for the hours each instance runs. Pick the instance type that matches your workload's CPU, memory, and storage needs.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What counts as one billable unit for an hourly instance rate?
One unit is one running ARM64 EC2 instance of the type you pick, billed per hour. Each launched instance meters separately. Running two instances of the same type bills two hourly rates at once. The rate covers the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.8 EUS image plus vendor support on that instance.
Am I charged the software rate when an instance is stopped or paused?
The hourly software rate meters running time only. A stopped instance does not accrue this charge. AWS may still bill separately for attached storage on stopped instances, but that is an AWS infrastructure cost, not part of this software rate.
Do I pay extra to keep the Red Hat image patched with security updates?
No. The image ships with RHUI configured, which keeps the running image up to date at no additional cost. Each image also includes the latest security updates available at its release date. You pay only the hourly rate for the instance type you run.
