    Overview

AlmaLinux 9.8 Minimal AMI - Secure, Lightweight, AWS-Ready

Deploy a hardened, RHEL-compatible Linux server in under 60 seconds. This AlmaLinux 9.8 AMI from Rinne Labs is purpose-built for teams that need a minimal, secure operating system with native AWS integration - without the bloat of standard images

Why This AMI Over Standard AlmaLinux Images

This image is built from the official AlmaLinux 9.8 ISO with only the "Minimal Install" package group, resulting in an 8GB footprint compared to larger default installations. Key differences from standard community images:

    • Smaller disk footprint - 8GB root partition (expandable) with no LVM overhead, reducing EBS storage costs
    • Pre-installed AWS tooling - AWS CLI, Elastic Network Adapter (ENA), and NVMe drivers are ready from first boot
    • Security-first configuration - SELinux enforcing mode enabled, root login disabled, key-based authentication only
    • Faster instance launches - Minimal package set and no LVM means quicker boot sequences for auto-scaling workloads
    • GPT and UEFI boot - Compatible with the latest AWS instance families including Graviton and Nitro-based types
    • XFS filesystem - High-performance filesystem suited for database and analytics workloads

    Key Features

    • Built from the official AlmaLinux 9.8 ISO image
    • Cloud-init installed and configured for automated provisioning
    • Automatic root disk resize based on instance volume configuration
    • Updated with the latest security patches at time of build
    • Key-based authentication with 'ec2-user' username

    Use Case: Auto-Scaling Web Tier

Teams running auto-scaling groups behind an Application Load Balancer benefit directly from this image's minimal footprint. When scaling events trigger new instances, the 8GB image with pre-installed AWS drivers launches and registers with the target group faster than full-sized AMIs. The reduced EBS volume size also lowers per-instance storage costs across dozens or hundreds of instances in the group

    Ideal For

    • DevOps engineers deploying ephemeral workloads and CI/CD build agents
    • Platform teams migrating from CentOS to a supported RHEL-compatible distribution
    • Developers needing lightweight instances for testing and development
    • Database administrators wanting a minimal OS layer beneath their data tier
    • Startups optimizing cloud spend with smaller, faster-booting instances

    Highlights

    • Security-hardened from first boot: SELinux enforcing mode enabled, root login disabled, key-based authentication only via 'ec2-user', and all latest security patches applied at build time. Unlike default community images, this AMI ships pre-hardened so you spend less time on post-launch lockdown and more time deploying your applications
    • Native AWS integration out of the box: AWS CLI, Elastic Network Adapter (ENA), and NVMe drivers are pre-installed and configured. Cloud-init handles automated provisioning, and the root partition automatically expands to match your configured EBS volume size - no manual disk operations required after launch
    • Minimal 8GB footprint with no LVM: Built from the official AlmaLinux 9.8 ISO using only the Minimal Install package group. Uses GPT and UEFI boot with XFS filesystem. The smaller image size means faster instance launches for auto-scaling workloads and lower per-instance EBS storage costs compared to full-sized Linux AMIs
