Ubuntu Server delivers services reliably, predictably and economically. It is the perfect base on which to build your instances. Ubuntu is the world's most popular Linux for cloud environments and is suitable for small to large-scale Linux operations. Ubuntu Server for AWS is designed by Canonical (the publishers of Ubuntu) and optimized for AWS. For more information, visit https://ubuntu.com/aws.
Ubuntu is free and will always be, with the option to access additional security, management tools and technical support when you need it through additional commercial offerings from Canonical.

See AWS Free Tier for more details. See Legacy AWS Free Tier for more details.
This listing runs at no software charge, so every dimension is billed at the free rate. Each dimension maps to a specific Amazon EC2 instance type, priced by the hour (Hrs). You choose the instance that fits your workload, from small general-purpose types like t3.micro to memory-, compute-, storage-, and GPU-focused types such as r7i.48xlarge, c8i.96xlarge, or p6-b300.48xlarge. Pricing scales with the size and capability of the instance you select, not with any tier of the operating system. You pay only the underlying AWS compute cost for the instance you launch.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually pay for when the software charge is free?
You pay only the underlying Amazon EC2 compute cost for the instance type you launch. The operating system carries no software charge. Each dimension maps to one EC2 instance type, billed per hour of running time. Your bill scales with instance size and hours used.
Am I charged for an instance that is stopped or powered off?
The operating system carries no software charge, so stopping an instance removes hourly compute charges for that instance. Powered-off instances may still incur AWS storage fees for attached volumes. The per-hour rate applies only while the instance runs.
What security and support do I get with this free version compared to the Pro edition?
This free version includes an AWS-optimized kernel, security patches for the kernel and key infrastructure components, and images mirrored across AWS regions, with a 5-year lifetime. Expanded application-layer security, kernel live patching, FIPS and CC-EAL certified components, and a longer lifetime belong to a separate edition, not this listing.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
