This sample data set contains normalized activity index values for the region surrounding Washington, D.C. aggregated into grid tiles of 100-meter resolution. The data is provided daily from February 2020 to June 2020.
Mapbox Movement is a privacy-forward dataset of device density, activity, and movement over time drawn from 700M+ users and 45,000+ different mobile apps globally contributing 20B+ live location updates daily. The dataset captures significant driving and non-driving mobile device activity aggregated into geographic tiles of 100-meter resolution (approx. 1 city block) and administrative boundaries (states/counties). Mapbox Movement dataset provides a high-definition view of how, where, and when people move through a city or specific geography
Mapbox uses Subscription Verification for every product on AWS Data Exchange. Subscribers with intended applications from the unsupported use cases list below be declined.
Examples of unsupported use cases: attempts to track individual identities or demographics from the data set, targeted surveillance efforts, requesting a stream of “raw” (unaggregated) location data, analysis of small group activities or minor events in sparsely populated areas, and analysis of stationary activity.
The data set Includes a metric of mobile device activity in the sample region and time period, aggregated daily by zoom:18 “quadkey” tiles (approx. 100m-sized grids). The counts are normalized and low-volume areas are excluded from the data to protect user privacy. See Privacy Policy and Telemetry for more info. This data cut is specifically baselined using January 2020 as “normal."
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.
This listing is a free sample of the Mapbox Movement US Daily Activity Index. It carries a single pricing dimension billed at no cost, so you pay nothing to access the sample. The sample lets you evaluate the daily-aggregated activity dataset before any paid commitment. The daily data cut shows day-by-day movement trends and helps you review anomaly events on specific dates. Because it is a sample, there are no usage tiers, quantity choices, or scaling charges to configure. To license the full dataset by geography, you contact the vendor separately.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the Activity Index value in this sample dataset actually represent?
The Activity Index is a proprietary density metric showing activity levels in a given area and time window. It is a decimal from 0 to 1. A normalization process smooths out extreme outlier activity, so you can compare relative movement across areas and dates.
How is the sample data delivered and how granular is it?
Data arrives as CSV files with a folder structure named by geographic zoom tiles and time buckets. Movement is aggregated into 100-meter tiles, about one city block, plus state and county boundaries. You can process the files with any programming language or geospatial tool.
What does the free sample not include compared to the licensed dataset?
The sample gives you the US daily activity data cut for evaluation only. The full dataset is licensed by geography, such as global, country, state, or city, on an annual basis. To access broader coverage or production use, you contact the vendor separately.
