Overview
Description
This dataset offers a comprehensive historical record of exchange rates between the US Dollar (USD) and over 140 other global currencies, forming a collection of more than 140 currency pairs. The data is structured with the USD as the base currency, providing a detailed and invaluable resource for financial analysis, economic research, and international market studies.
Dataset Structure
- Base Currency: All exchange rates are quoted in terms of the US Dollar (USD). This means each record shows how much of a foreign currency is equivalent to one USD.
- Currency Pairs: The dataset includes over 140 different foreign currencies paired against the USD, like USD/EUR, USD/JPY, etc. Each pair represents the rate of exchange between the USD and the respective foreign currency.
- Conversion Formula (Target Currency to USD): To convert a value from a target currency (e.g., EUR, JPY) to USD, the formula is 1 / rate. For instance, if the EUR/USD rate is 0.85, then 1 Euro is equivalent to 1/0.85 USD.
- Cross-Currency Conversion Formula: To calculate the exchange rate from one non-USD currency to another (e.g., EUR to JPY), use the formula 1 / (rate of USD to EUR / rate of USD to JPY). This formula allows for the derivation of exchange rates between two foreign currencies without directly referencing their individual rates against the USD.
- Historical Data: The dataset encompasses historical exchange rate data, offering a timeline that is crucial for trend analysis and historical comparisons.
Use Cases
- Economic Research: Useful for macroeconomic studies, especially in analyzing currency fluctuations and their impact on global trade and economics.
- Financial Analysis: Essential for financial analysts and investors for currency risk assessment, portfolio diversification, and international investment strategies.
- Market Forecasting: Aids in forecasting market trends by studying historical currency performance.
- Educational Use: Serves as a practical dataset for academic purposes, particularly in courses related to finance, international business, and economics.
