This product has charges associated with it for the build, maintenance, and support of the Amazon Machine Image (AMI). Apache Kafka is a publish-subscribe-based fault-tolerant messaging system. We have packaged and hardened the Kafka service offering so our customers can seamlessly subscribe to this offering with no setup work from their end.
This is a repackaged open-source software product wherein additional charges apply for support and for providing it in a simple consumable AMI. Apache Kafka is a publish-subscribe-based fault-tolerant messaging system. In comparison to other messaging systems, Kafka has better throughput, built-in partitioning, replication, and inherent fault tolerance, which makes it a good fit for large-scale message processing applications. We have packaged the Kafka and Zookeeper as clusters to increase the resiliency and availability of the services. All that you have to do is subscribe to this offering from the marketplace, create topics, publish messages from the producers, and start consuming with the consumers.
AWS Marketplace now accepts line of credit payments through the PNC Vendor Finance program. This program is available to select AWS customers in the US, excluding NV, NC, ND, TN, & VT.

You pay by the hour for the EC2 instance size you run. This software delivers a pre-configured 3-broker Apache Kafka cluster on Windows Server 2019. Every instance runs the same cluster; the price differs only by the compute size you pick. Options span burstable t2, t3, and t3a sizes for lighter workloads through m3, m4, m6a, m7a, r3, and c3 families for heavier throughput. Sizes range from nano and micro up to 48xlarge. Larger instances give more CPU and memory and bill at a higher hourly rate. AWS infrastructure charges apply separately.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What do I actually get when I launch one of these hourly instances?
You get a machine image running on Windows Server 2019. It comes with a pre-configured 3-broker Apache Kafka cluster running as Windows services. A sample topic is pre-created. You connect via RDP as Administrator. The instance size you pick sets the CPU and memory available to the cluster.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped?
The software fee meters running hours. A fully stopped instance stops accruing the hourly software charge. However, AWS may still bill you for attached storage and other infrastructure while the instance is stopped. AWS infrastructure charges are separate from the software price and apply on your AWS bill.
Do the three Kafka brokers each cost extra, or is it one price?
All three brokers run on the single instance you launch. You pay one hourly rate for that instance, not per broker. The three brokers (KafkaBroker1, KafkaBroker2, KafkaBroker3) run as Windows services on the same machine. Your bill is driven only by the instance size and hours run.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
